Owen and West Ham - the perfect fit!

As Newcastle sink deeper and deeper beneath the Plimsoll Line, the future of Owen becomes more and more of an issue. The decision to leave him out of the side at Liverpool almost certainly signaled the end of his days at the Barcodes and with him free to move on a Bosman, he could be just what we are looking for!

Now I know we have enough ex Geordie sick-notes already so any deal we offered Owen would have to be on a pay when you play basis. I am sure a deal could be constructed that frees Michael to up and leave when he wants, allows us to terminate the contract if he doesn't shape up but pays him top dollar when he performs to the best of his ability.

Now, let's look at it from Owen's point of view first. He is desperate to get into the England squad for the World Cup - and to do that he needs to be playing regularly in the Premiership. The top 4 don't want him, except perhaps as an impact sub, and that doesn't suit Owen's needs at all. If not the top 4, then what options are available to him? The field suddenly narrows to a handful of clubs. Tottenham? Owen would probably be behind Keane and Defoe in the pecking order, and those two will be competing with each other for one place once 'Arry has signed the big man up front he is looking for. Villa are a possibility, as are Everton, and that would enable Michael to stay closer to home, but I'm not sure the Moyes or O'Neill management styles would suit Owen. He is not into running 1000 miles every game and wants a manager who will be sympathetic to his skills and what he can offer, a manager who understands how a forward thinks, a manager like...Zola.

From our point of view, we do not want another crock draining our financial resources, but a pay as you play contract would be ideal. Imagine Owen playing on the shoulder of Ashton or Cole. The recent barren spell apart, Owen still scores at a ratio of close to one goal every two games. That is the vital ingredient we have been missing. Stick in 16 goals from Owen over the course of a season and we will be banging on the door of the big boys.

We don't know what we have available to spend this summer but, unless a billionaire steps in, we are unlikely to be talking major dosh. Owen is available on a free. I would back Zola to reignite his career if we can get him fit. If unfit, he wouldn't cost us anything anyway if the contract was worded properly. Owen scores every time he plays at Upton Park, isn't it about time he was putting the ball in the net for the home team and not the opposition?

And one final thought - the last time England won the World Cup, a West Ham number 10 scored a hat-trick in the final. Now there's a thought Michael!

owen would never agree on a pay-as-you-play contract, he isnt past it like fowler nor is he stupid, hes not going to have any trouble finding a club at all as hes natural goal scorer. I think its a matter of which club can pay his wages. Thus ruling us out, Most likely Villa or everton if they cant hold on to Jo.

Well we pay higher wages than both Villa and Everton so that throws a spanner into your works Colm! Owen might not WANT a pay when you play contract but I can't see him getting anything else. He might not be stupid but nor are the clubs and in the current economic climate, nobody is going to offer him anything else whilst still giving him the chance of impressing Fabio. Owen is a very wealthy guy. I think his England ambitions will persuade him to take the pay when you play deal.

you talk utter rubbish, all your blog's are just fantasy or nonsense, maybe you should get a hobbie like train spotting instead of trying to wind up every fan of premier league teams and embarrassing west ham fans.

under west hams current ownership I cant see how we could efford Owens wages more than villa or everton could.

Colm, we will be paying Neill less, Lunjberg is off the payroll, we should be shedding Davenport, Bowyer and Quashie...If he scores he is worth £100k per week.

owen and west ham...a perfik match.....absolutely agree.....a clapped out, injury riddled player, on wages that hurt the club is just what west ham always aspire to sign! lol

Yep, that's why Liam Brady graced Upton Park, why Tristan cracked home that beauty on Saturday, why Pearce scared the life out of Premiership players, why Ian Wright added to his Premiership goal tally, why Di Canio was reborn in Claret and Blue...they aint all Radfords, Ljungbergs and Winterburns!

we can all roll out the names from days gone past...west hams recent policy is to sign injury riddled players on ridiculous wages, and thats why owen and west ham are a perfect match....and tristan scoring one good goal does not make him a great player you muppet! he does not even look prem satndard!

Well I got laughed off of KUMB for saying exactly the same thing months ago Hammersfan! It isn't so daft but I'd be worried by his recent form or lack of it and the way he seems to have lost his pace. Owen will have plenty of offers and I had heard we had made an initial offer to talk months ago and were not rebuffed... Then again I think of Jimmy Greaves, Davor Suker, Paolo Futre, Ian Wright, Lee Chapman, John Radford and all the yesterday's men we wasted time and money on. Mind you if Zola can get Tristan to score 3 goals you never know what he could do with a Michael Owen!

Ian Wright scored a few for us but the rest...whistle and pretend we never signed them!

Sorry but I'm gonna disagree on this one. Owen is as fragile as Bellamy or Ashton. We did well to get rid of Bellars, we don't need to replace him with another sicknote. Also, Owen is heavily into his horse racing and it takes up more and more of his time and interest. Last year he built an enormous training complex near Broxton in Cheshire for his nags and he lives on a huge estate in Flintshire that he commutes from to Newcastle i believe. I can only see him going to a North West club. I would doubt his commitment not only to his club but to football in general. In addition, his wages would be eyewatering and on a 'pound-per-minute' ratio, he'd be one of the worst players in the Premiership.

I KNEW you would disagree Den! Just wait, when he ha netted 20 goals and shot us into the Champions League, you can eat the humble pie I serve you!

Im with Den on this one,and to throw a spanner into you works hammersfan ;-) theres a reason why we need to pay Neill less and get rid of Ljungberg and those fringies we simply couldnt/cant efford it/them. Maybe invesstment from new owners would do the trick.

Dont get me wrong I'd love to see him at West Ham as I think hes top class. Den is right though His heart is in his horses, not football. Liverpool were pritty much the only club that got his full attention. Excluding Real but they didnt pay him enough attention.

Woa Woa slow down a bit ladies i think you are getting ahead of yourselves. WBA are gone, Boro have to go to NUFC and us so i think they are gone too, that leaves the geordies, Hull and Mackems. i think Mackems will gey 1 more win and geordies will escape by their skins, which outs poor old Hull into bottom 3. Newcastle will keep Owen.

too far away from his horses

Owen will leave Newcastle. His exit visa was stamped when Shearer left him out against Liverpool. Newcastle can't afford him, whether they stay up or go down. And Owen knows that he isn't going to get in the England squad if he stays there. It is too cold for Fabio that far north!
