Goalkeeper for next sea...Just a quick article HF:

Goalkeeper for next season? Get Alex McCarthy NOW!

As the season draws to a close and we begin to look to next season, the goalkeeping position is one we will be looking to strengthen over the summer with Jussi Jasskelainen now in the twilight of his career.

Yesterday I read an article linking us with Brad Guzan, who without doubt is a good goalkeeper. It would be an improvement if we did get him, but how much of an improvement? Though the American international has been keeping Shay Given out of the Aston Villa side, Villa have struggled this season and shipped in a few goals on more than one occasion. Obviously the goalkeeper cannot be entirely blamed for this, but Guzan has always come across – to coin a phrase from an ex-West Ham 'keeper, David James – as a bit camerish to me.

My choice? Well there's one young 'keeper that has really caught my eye in the few appearances he has made this season, and that is Reading's Alex McCarthy. Tall, brave, agile, alert, and just 23 years of age. In my view he will be worth more than £15 million before too long and will be the one to take over from Joe Hart as England's number one. I am astonished he hasn’t already been snapped up by a bigger club, and leaves me quite anxious that we could be missing out on a future superstar.

Manager Sam Allardyce should act now. We have already missed out on another promising young 'keeper in Jack Butland, who signed for Stoke in the January window for a bargain £3.5 million whilst we stood there twiddling our thumbs.Stanihttp://www.staniarmy.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4157334771526760271.post-55368512834339201162013-05-07T11:06:09.782+01:002013-05-07T11:06:09.782+01:00It may be Dave, but after Zola, Grant and Allardyc...It may be Dave, but after Zola, Grant and Allardyce, I'd have anybody!Hammersfanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08872521473888699856noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4157334771526760271.post-13859651958702171942013-05-06T11:35:03.699+01:002013-05-06T11:35:03.699+01:00Stani, I agree with you. Terrible judgement from Jussi when he charged out of goal - he should realise that electric mobility scooters aren't that quick - and a couple of goal mouth scrambles in the Newscastle box. Bit of a damp squib game.

And yes, we are safe. So safe that I was cheering on Wigan against Spurs and West Brom. I hope they avoid the drop and would love one of Sunderland, Newscastle or Stoke to go down; but I fear it will be Norwich.Hammersfanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08872521473888699856noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4157334771526760271.post-36591649122444648912013-05-06T08:52:52.152+01:002013-05-06T08:52:52.152+01:00HF, no end of match report? Thought you might have...HF, no end of match report? Thought you might have acknowledged that short of an unprecedented collapse in goal differences we are "mathematically" safe! The key is the last day Villa v Wigan match. Barring the bottom 2 every team could equal or surpass our 43 points however Wigan needs to win every game, and therefore must beat Villa who could then only max out at 43 pts with a current goal diff 13 worst than ours. I'm sure the stoke/Sunderland/Southampton fixtures probably leads to a similar conclusion, but the goal diff is not so clear cut!Travelling Hammernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4157334771526760271.post-59383372663039709942013-05-05T22:55:37.456+01:002013-05-05T22:55:37.456+01:00Dave, HF,

I'll never forget that game at Upton Park in 2004/05 when Leeds had 2 cast iron penalties turned down (which he agreed). Then when Healy dived last minute to secure a draw he starts complaining, "just because the ref missed the first 2 incidents doesn't give you the right to cheat".
