Ashton and Dyer On Their Way

Full marks to those responsible for the Duxbury interview, it is throwing up some very interesting stuff. As I have said, I would no more trust the guy than I would Gary Glitter in an orphanage, but there is plenty of scope for reading between the lines, of extrapolating conclusions out of Duxbury's omissions. Take this quotation:

"Gianfranco understands the heartbeat of the club has to be English because we are in the Premier League and if you look at our players – Collison, Noble, Tomkins, the spine – Green, Upson, Parker, Cole it’s English. He’s happy with his squad and he would go into battle with it again but what he wants to do is get three players with a much higher standard than perhaps what we’ve got, which will raise everybody. We are in dialogue, and we have been to be fair, with English players, who fit that bill, but for a variety of reasons, mostly economic, we’ve not been able to secure them."

Now the thing that screams out to me here is the naming of Cole in "the spine", not Ashton. Ask most fans who express a preference, and they would nominate Beano as the main man up front, but Zola and Duxbury apparently think otherwise. How else can you explain the identification of Carlton and the failure to even mention poor old Primadeano? How will this play with Ashton when he reads it I wonder? If I was him, I would not be best pleased!

And the other omission? Well Dyer of course! Where is he? He has more England caps than all the others put together (albeit most were awarded for 10 minute appearances as a substitute) and yet he does not merit a mention as part of the English core of the team.

Now it may be that Duxbury has simply forgotten that the guys exist. Who could blame him based on the minutes either have spent on the pitch? But surely the £120,000 or so that disappears in wages each week should prick the guy's memory. My interpretation is that Beano's and Dyer's days may be numbered, despite what Duxbury says about not selling Ashton.

  1. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that between them, they made like 10 appearances, whereas Parker, Upson, Noble, Collison, COle, Green, actually played games and therefore contributed to the 08/09 season, making THEM the spine of the team. You may read between the lines, but I think your speculation is biased, as you have not mentioned this quote, also by SD in the same interview...

KUMB: Jason Burt, writing in the Independent today says that we'll accept £10million for Dean Ashton. Is that correct?

SD: No. I'm not selling him to Stoke and Dean Ashton is not £10million in any way. I want Dean Ashton here, I want him fit, I want him playing and it'll be nice to see him. So he is not being sold.

  2. You are reading too much into it I reckon. The fact is they have hardly played. But I guess it generated a headline.

I would be much more interested to hear what SD has to say about his involvement in the Tevez affair.

  3. Sorry, but aren't you meant to say who did the Interviews? Give them some credit at least....

  4. 1722, that's a very good point but you are missing another nuance. Keep in mind that Duxbury is a "cover your own back merchant". Look again at the quotation. Who isn't selling him to Stoke? I quote, "I'm not selling him to Stoke" and later "I want Dean Ashton here, I want him fit, I want him playing and it'll be nice to see him." Count the "I"s. Do you see Zola there? I don't! Who picks the team exactly? Who determines the squad exactly? WHEN Ashton goes, Duxbury will CLAIM it is a footballing as opposed to a business decision and he will point to this interview to absolve himself of blame. "It was the manager's decision. If you remember I said I wouldn't sell him but I have to give the manager what he wants...blah, blah, blah." After all those years of Blair, it surprises me that people are not more attuned to doublespeak!

  5. I'm glad i have a whole copy of this article since you haven't accredited the original author especially in light of the COPYWRITE it has under it !!! Only a fool would do that, more fool you !!!

  6. Why? Have you never seen articles spun off of other articles. Friend Mr Dale has an ego comparable with Mr Duxbury's, thus his mugshot all over the blog! There, I have credited him! LOL.

  7. But Cole has by far been our biggest hitman this season. you must also remember he is giving a non-scripted answer, you therefore can't pick up on his every use of first person pronouns and what not.

  8. 2106, you can bet your life that Duxbury has rehearsed very carefully what he said. He would have either had the questions sent to him ahead of the interview or would have "brainstormed" what might be asked. Guessing wouldn't have been difficult would it? The first person pronouns point to very careful planning or an ego maniac. You pays your season ticket money and makes your choice!

  9. i would be pleased if deano goes we would get 10m for someone who doesnt play. cole is more athletic and aggresive he got 12 goals last season and yet deano only played about 4 games. with 10m we could add it to our budget and then get a top quality striker who actually does play

  10. Providing Zola is allowed to spend it! How much of the Bellamy money was spent? £5m so far. Where has the rest gone exactly?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Duxbury did say that not all the money from transfers go towards a replacement

  12. Why an earth would you read bewtween those lines when in the very same interview he said that Ashton will not be sold and certainly not for £10m????

  13. Hammersfan - "Providing Zola is allowed to spend it! How much of the Bellamy money was spent? £5m so far. Where has the rest gone exactly?"
You didn't even read the interview did you? Duxbury answers this question.

  14. Oh, and also, Duxbury said that transfers this summer will be funded by player sales, this is the kitty. We are offloading unwanted players such as Faubert and Davenport and these funds will be abvailable to Zola, all of it.

What hammersfan is saying is that SD might mean Ashton will be sold to some other club for a fee greater or less that £10m. In other words, Hammersfan is saying that SD chooses his words very carefully, so much so that there are a lot of lines to read between. He didn't say - "Ashton is going nowhere" or "he'll not go for less that £xm". did he?

I think Hammersfan makes a fair point.

Oh and by the way there is no copywrite issue when copying less than 10% of an article - so no issue so far [other than not politely crediting the author].

I would rather we gambled one more season on Ashton - would hate to see him come good somewhere else. I'd also gamble on Dyer if he's willing to accept a drastic cut in wages. However, I have to say based on the SD interview, like Hammersfan, I wouldn't be at all surprised if we see Ashton and Dyer off. And it wouldn't be the end of the world either.

  16. If Deano stays, will you finally put your hands up and admit you don't really know what you're talking about?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Baba - How about when he says '...so he is not being sold.'

There's not too many lines to read between there. He's said quite clearly and categoricaly that he's not being sold. Not to another club or for more than £10m.

Add to that that Zola has already said on the official web site that he's excited about working with Ashton next season.

What more can they both possibly say than that???

Jeez, you guys just want to find the negative in everything.

  18. Baba O' Riley - Spot on.
Whilst I like what SD is saying in both interviews (of which KUMB's IMO is the better), I can't believe that so many on here and 'other' blogs / sites, refuse to at least 'take a peek' between the lines. Most come on here clouded by their dislike of HF and everything he has to say - how they miss the wind ups is beyond me - nevertheless he makes valid points about SD's 'spin' and recent 'history'.

I for one am keeping my glass half full for one reason only. I think that GZ is as 'honourable' a manager, as we are going to get. Rightly or wrongly, I honestly think he believes in ' the project' and has good intentions for the future of WHU and I don't believe he'd be involved if he wasn't going to get the support from those around him.
    As always, time will tell.

  19. 1459, I'm not saying he WILL be sold, it may well be that he will fail any medical he is put through and it may well be that no club will be stupid enough to meet his valuation. All I'm saying is, don't be surprised if he goes, and then don't be surprised if Duxbury says the sale is based on footballing decisions.

  20. We don't miss Hf's wind-ups, we just don't find them funny - BIG DIFFERENCE
