Shaking Off The Curbishley Era

Like a dog that has taken an unwanted ducking, we are currently in the process of shaking off the last vestiges of the Curbishley era. The medical team have been overhauled, the coaching staff have been refreshed, the assistant manager role has seen an expert replace a useless lump and most of the Curbishley signings have gone, are on their way or will soon be plying their trade elsewhere if we can find a taker. Tactically, the "Lump It And See" approach of Curbishley has been packaged up in a box marked "return to sender", ready for Charlton's return to the third tier of English football where the crude approach belongs.

On the playing front, Freddie Lungburst and Solano were the first to depart, and now Bellyache and Neill have followed. Surely it is only a matter of time before Downpipe is offloaded, whilst Queasy will probably be on loan to another Fizzy Pop side until his contract runs down to zero. If anybody is stupid enough to bid a reasonable figure for him then Faux Pas will soon be parking his fat arse on a substitute's bench somewhere else too.

So what have we left to show for the Turds Interregnum? Upson, Dyer, Boa-Morte and Parker. Of those, Boa would have gone in January had he been prepared to accept a wage cut and I suspect Dyer would have been offloaded too had we ever managed to get him fit enough to appear in the shop window. I know Pardew signed him, but Bowyer is also a Curbishley man and he will soon be out of the door. All in all, that is quite a turn around in the space of approximately nine months. Women make a fuss about giving birth to one baby in that period of time, Zola and Clarke have given birth to a whole new club!

Or have they? In truth, step one has been nearly completed but now comes the much more difficult part. Cutting out the cancer is relatively easy, but seeing the patient through to a long term recovery is not so simple. We were very badly wounded by Eggert and Turds, almost mortally so, and the road to recovery may yet be challenging. Financially we are in a mess and Dyer, for one, will still be a raw wound in the dressing room because of his absurdly inflated wages. For that reason alone, I would like to see him moved on. And the same holds true for Parker if he is going to continue to break down with injuries. The trouble is, City have now landed Barry so they won't be keen on paying silly money for Parker now.

With all the departures, the squad is now ridiculously thin. We don't have a right back worthy of the name and Ashton and Cole are our only two strikers - and Beano is more a striker in the British Leyland sense given how much time he spends lying on the sofa! Do we have the money to buy replacements after the Turds and Egg extravagances? God help us if we don't!

  1. Who is Turds?

  2. not all of Curbishleys signing were bad. Upson and Parker are amazing. Neill on his day is good, Bellamy, unfortunately, is good. I think Solano was really good for that season, i really wanted him to stay.
But i do agree that Quashie, Boa Morte and Faubert have been massive dissapointments.
But Boa Morte has improved so i would like him to stay.
But Curbishleys tactics were boring and defensive, but he did help keep us up, so im thankful for that.

We desperately need a right back and a few strickers!
I would like Glen Johnson, Bojan and, of course, Carlos Tevez. I'm still dreaming for that day when Tevez returns.

  3. YAWN, same old boring crap on Curbishley that we have heard a million times. Once you take a dislike to someone you don't let it go do you?

  4. Youre a hoot mate .
Charlton never played crudely with a long ball up and at em approach under Curbs, we played good passing football and managed to stick 4 past your lot on 3 occasions that I recall ( although one was the start of Pardew ( ugh) against Curbs with a Curbs built team !!
Anyway, youre bust now , were bust everybody's bust , so who cares
and by the way Parker's brilliant and Upson's not bad so at least Curbs bought you a couple of decent ones !!

  5. 1949, Turds is "Curbs" correctly spelt.

    Spike, yawn, come up with a more original critique eh? ; }

Charlton fan, sorry to see the mess you are in.

  6. I found my way onto this site via "Charlton Newsnow" so there's a giveaway!!

Notwithstanding that, I do understand the Curbishley problem, i.e. he builds very functional, "let's just get a result" teams, but is the vitriol really justified? First, he kept you up when you were dead and buried. Whilst many would argue that you cheated to survive (and you may yet pay further for that if Messrs Scudamore and Triesman ever conclude their review), Curb's grim style paid dividends didn't it? Second, the following season you were 10th and then 7th (or thereabouts) when he left. To be fair, Zola appears to be doing a great job (to my surprise if I'm being honest), but don't get carried away or set your benchmark too high. Egghead was your real problem, his lack of nous and alleged lack of integrity nearly sank the ship. Without Curbs you'd have been playing Championship Football today. Don't you think that you ought to be a little less vindictive??!!!

PS I'm completely relaxed if you simply slag me off for being a Charlton fan!! Not sure it will help your case though.

  7. Anon 20:56, I'm not going to slag you for supporting Charlton. True fans of any club deserve respect. What you fail to understand in your analysis is that Eggert backed his manager's judgement - which is what you want a chairman to do. Curbishley did not rescue us, he dug the grave we found ourselves in with the most awful run of results from his taking over through to the very fortunate beginning of the Great Escape - with the award of the goal that never was at Blackburn. My loathing of the guy goes back to his demanding a transfer as a player when we were relegated. Selfish no mark!

  8. I've nothing against Curbs or Merv the swerve ... but they were dour and full of excuses ... the problem was that we played some relly duff games .... I flew home from Iraq last year and drove up to Anfield with my lad and was gobsmacked at his tactics ...

Und GFZ and Clarky it is the style of football we are playing, the football that is the trademark of the club and has been for decades ... I really don't care where we finish in the league, so long as we stay up and the football is seeing us have a go and passing the ball about ...

As for the departures anounced, no real suprises apart from Queezie ... anyone shed any light on that one ... Obviously Davs and Faubert will arrive to one way tickets elsewhere ....

It is all about who we are looking to bring in now ....

  9. I see poor old Billyboy has joined the ranks of undesirables!

  10. There is only 1 Turd on here and I think we all know who that is.

  11. Don't be so hard on yourself Nathan!

So Spike you are an orgster too! What's your handle over there? Billyboy has been struck off? There's a surprise! He was posting some outrageous stuff and clogging up the boards appallingly.

Yes Tom, the football under Curbishley was truly dire - but then he was a Birmingham player more than a West Ham player and that infexted him.

  12. I thought the Newsnow police would be able to tell you that LMFAO. Let's just say that I am in an English speaking country that would just love you!

  13. Spike, I have assumed that you are not somebody who would post crude racism. Am I wrong?

  14. Nothing very surprising here, just an end of season clear out, but it does give me cause for concern. 5 first team squad members have been released, although only Neill was a first choice. Zola has stated that he only wants to bring in 2 or 3 new faces, so 3 signings and perhaps 2 loans to replace the 5 who have been released.

That would give us a 21 man outfield squad that would include Dyer, Gabbidon, Ashton, Parker and Upson. It is not beyond the bounds of reason that none of those 5 will manage even half a season, such is their history and Collins for that matter does not have a good attendance record. That could see us with 15 or 16 available players with an average age of about 14!

Now don't get me wrong I am a fan of the little Sardine, but the boyish charm and wide eyed honesty could also be interpretted as naivety. We over-achieved this season and if the young lads who had to walk to the crease a bit early in the innings had not done so well we may have really struggled. Those boys will find it harder next season and my concerns are that unless we strengthen the squad with a bit more experience, we will struggle to finish in the top half.

I would like to see Gabbidon, Ashton and Dyer replaced, I don't think they will manage 50 games between them all season and that would imperil our premiership survival with such a small squad.

Finally can I register my delight at the parting of the ways with Lucas Neill. Too slow, can't turn and can't keep his hands to himself, he has been a liability for most of his time with us. Opposition teams have recognised him as our weak spot for the last two seasons and have attacked relentlessly down that flank. So much so that MacCartney looked like a £6Million player (well Sunderland thought so anyway). Truth of the matter was he didn't have to do much. Ilunga has been given the space to become one of our most attacking outlets and this again has been because he has not been called upon much defensively. Behrami has been restricted by having to do half of Neill's work for him, so perhaps we could see more from him next year, I think he could make a good job of the defensive midfield job if we don't go back in for Kovac.

I'll accept that he may be a good captain, but that's not enough. With the possible exception of Mike Brearley captaining the England cricket team in the 70's no player has ever justified inclusion in a team on the grounds of their captaincy skills alone.

New captain; Upson to groom Tomkins for the job.

  15. Oh god I've just noticed that we've been linked with a lad called Fanni for right back. That should please the Orgsters!

  16. Just think, Fanni and Master Bates in the same dressing room! Surely there is a John Thomas and a Dick Head out there somewhere for us to sign?
