On The Cusp Of Triumph And Disaster. How West Ham could pip Tottenham, Villa, Arsenal, Man City and Everton for 4th place.
Just ahead of the big kick off last season I posted how we could be genuine contenders for the top 4. I did not perceive any threat of relegation and called for a fairly basic but pragmatic approach given our then squad - using Faubert and Etherington down the flanks to deliver the ammunition for Ashton and Cole to bully home the goals. I called set pieces as a vital key to success, using the aerial threat of Upson, Collins, Ashton and Cole at corners and free kicks. To improve on our previous mediocre season, we had to beat every team outside the top 4 at Upton Park and create a sense of fortress West Ham.
And the season started well. Apart from that thumping at Man City, we looked good. Remember the victories over Wigan, Blackburn and Newcastle? And who was the key? One Julian Faubert who had a hand in five of the first six goals we scored. What were our weaknesses? No cover at left back and a slow right back - otherwise we looked in pretty good shape.
That is not the case this season. In truth, the squad as it stands, is weaker than at the equivalent stage last year. We have lost Bellamy and not many of us hold out much hope of seeing Ashton as an effective contributor. We still lack cover at left back and we do not have a right back worthy of the name, slow or not. Meanwhile, I do not see any strategy that would enable us to push for the top 4 with our present squad. In fact, I perceive a relegation threat if the squad is not improved. We are on the brink, looking into a very deep abyss.
However, two or three signings could change everything. Zola needs to abandon the 4-5-1 formation in my opinion. The brutal truth is that we do not have the personnel to make it work. Our midfielders do not score enough goals and Cole is not a 16 to 20 goal a season striker. Jimenez is a creator, not a finisher. We desperately need two strikers and I would now be happy if one of them was Eider G - he could play up top alongside Cole and perhaps swap positions with Jimenez to unsettle the opposition defenders. We then need another striker to cover for injuries. Add Neill to the equation and suddenly I would feel optimistic again.
The Top 4 monopoly will be broken this year. Arsenal are weaker than last year and the Premiership in general is weaker too. Man City apart, which team is significantly stronger? Tottenham perhaps. There is an opportunity here for a club to slip through an opening door to the Champions League and that team could be West Ham.
My preferred line up would be: Green: Neill, Upson, Collins, Ilunga; Behrami, Parker, Jimenez, Dyer; Cole, Eider G with the team playing 4-4-2 at home and 4-5-1 away from home. With Noble, Tomkins, Collison, Faubert, Spector, Savio, Kovac, A.N Other Striker and Stanislas on the bench, we would be equipped to mount a serious challenge for a top 4 position, with reasonable cover for every position. Add in a fit Ashton and we could really be a powerful outfit.
However, the season starts on Saturday and, as things stand, we only have Cole to play up front. Imagine if Cole had been injured on England duty just as Ashton was two years ago! The clock isn't just ticking for Zola to sign these strikers, the alarm bells are ringing! We are on the cusp - and this season could spell death or glory!
Not a west ham fan,but a city fan and i applaud your optimism, isnt that what its all about, genuine hope,i dont think it will be this year but you never know
ReplyDeletei wouldn't worry too much...there are at least 3 teams worse than the hammers in the league.
ReplyDeleteHAHAHA that's one of the funniest titles I've ever seen.....in your dreams. Top 4 my arse.
ReplyDeleteQuite simply, you are mad. West Ham won't get anywhere near that.
ReplyDeleteHahahaha not a chance in hell. Champions league? West Ham? Its going to be even tougher for you to get Europa league this year let alone champ league. Arsenal, Aston Vill, Everton, Spurs, City, possibly Sunderland could finish above this season. Villa or City only teams I can see cracking top four, with Spurs and Everton coming in reasonably close.
ReplyDeleteI thought that we signed the young swiss lad Daprela as cover at left back?
ReplyDeletedeluded
ReplyDeleteWIthout a doubt, the funniest article I have ever stumbled across on the Internet!
ReplyDeleteHilarious and quite simply, a piece of comedy genius!
I take my hat off to you young man. You are a very talented comedian and I imagine you will go all the way to the top.
Groundbreaking stuff.
Oh wait, you are actually being serious???
Crack is a dirty, dirty drug.
This has got to be the funniest thing I've ever seen.
ReplyDeleteWhy stop at the top 4, Reading your article I now beleive you lot should win the Premiership and then follow up by winning the Champions League next season.
You muppet, you've still not explained how Wet Spam are going to pip the rest to a top 4 finish
ReplyDeleteStop being a hypocrite on the Neill situation, one day you want him gone the next you want him back, make your mind up. And no, we will not finish in a champions league spot and you know we wont
ReplyDeleteIf you have the same energy that got paddy kenny man of the match in last years play off semi.You could be right and if things are has bad this season has last season then you could be in a dog fight with eleven other teams .Never mind signing players just join in with the energy cheats and you could beat or draw with any team that is unless they have better energy players than yours then its defeat get zola to sign ( RUNALLDAY EPHEDRINE }
ReplyDeleteha ha ha pikies. ,4th place my fooling arse
ReplyDeleteHammersfan .... you need to dish the funny tablets fella cos this is the most barking rant you have ever compiled. We are fine and with two new additions before the end of the month we will suprise a few ... Faubert has settled in at RB and we have an outstanding midfield. Goals will come ... have faith in GFZ and SC mate
ReplyDeleteone word to put the fear of god into wet spam that word is millwall
ReplyDeleteThis is not good all the comments too boring to comment on let's hope it's not a reflection of the coming season
ReplyDeleteYou moron, what the hell have you written. Wake up you stupid idiot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteIt's fools like you who make us look like idiots. The fact is that we are nothing but relegation fodder in the coming season. We'll just end up selling our best players to the others and purchase the spud rejects.
The season's not even started and the rest are already laughing at us.
10.41 and Tom, read what you have each written. Interesting how my article has stimulated two such diametrically opposed responses!
ReplyDeleteHammersfan, 10:41 is obviously a spud or Milwall numpty. I am full of optomism for the comming season, the Kovac signing does suprise me but I would guess there is either an issue over Parkers long term fitness and may have been bought on a buy now pay later deal. It may be as a security thing in case Manc citeh come in with a rediculous bid for Upson at the end of the month leaving no time to find a replacement. Either way I trust GFZ and SC on this,I still reckon one of Mancini, Balotelli, Gudjohnson, Toni or Chamakh will arrive by the end of the month if not two of them. If so I reckon we will be the suprise package and the top six is a more than realistic expectation, otherwise a comfy mid table and a cup run is on the cards. There are many a worse teams in the league for us to worry about relegation.
ReplyDeleteGood to see you still looking in Tom. Still in UK or back in Afghanistan?
