Birmingham 1 West Ham 0 Pathetically Predictable To Everybody Except Zola!
Before kick off I wrote:
"Then there is Bowyer, arriving late in our box. It will be Kovac's job to mark him so it is a pretty safe bet that Bowyer will score!"
And at half time I blogged:
"Bowyer has been allowed two shots inside the box already - he will connect sweetly if we allow him another two in the second half...If you had to have money on the result at this stage, it would be on a 1-0 Birmingham win, with Bowyer scoring."
So tell me, if I can work out what is going to happen, why can't a brains trust of Zola and Clarke and the brainless idiots they are sending out onto the pitch? Against Hull we had to keep Bullard quiet. Did we even try? No. Against Manchester United we had to double up on Giggs. Did we do it? No. Against Birmingham we knew that Bowyer had to be tracked as he ran into the box. Did it happen? Of course it boody didn't!
Remember Liverpool's first goal against us at Upton Park? Hines playing a pass to a Liverpool player left of centre inside our half? Wasn't Stanislas in the almost exact same position when he gave away the ball for Birmingham to score today? Why does it happen? Trying to play pass and move football inside your own final third is crazy and right footed players playing on the left naturally look to come inside, into traffic in a congested area of the pitch. The result is pretty bloody predictable if you think about it! I blogged at half time that Stanislas was again on the wrong flank and so it proved. Why? If we can see it, why can't Zola? The guy is a bloody minded fool, that's why!
He picks Kovac to track opposition midfield runners. Can Kovac do it? No. How many times does Zola have to see this to understand it? Diamanti is not a forward, nor is he a right winger. Why the bloody hell isn't he given a floating role aka Bullard for Hull? Because Zola is a bloody minded fool with an obsession about players coming inside onto their strongest foot, even though this makes the job of the opposition full backs so easy. Birmingham had a centre back playing left back today. Did we ONCE try to skin him on the outside? No we bloody did not. He didn't have to show Diamanti inside, Diamanti didn't even know there was an outside! Birmingham had Ferguson protecting the centre of their back four, so what did we do all afternoon, we cut inside, into the most congested and best protected area of the pitch. When we did open up Birmingham on their left flank, who had a shooting chance? Diamanti on his wrong foot. So what did he do? He checked and the chance was gone, albeit he then tried a curled chip from a standing position.
Of course the head in the sand merchants will say we were unlucky. Dyer hit the post and Franco had a shot saved but how Jerome missed his chance, I will never know. Yes Noble's second yellow was harsh but Diamanti could have seen a straight red for his rugby tackle at the end of the first half. And Noble was stupid to talk himself into the book in the first place. It was a foul, albeit a soft one, so why was he gobbing off? He wasn't even the player involved! It all went back to Parker losing his rag. Instead of moaning at the ref, Parker should have been organising the troops!
And tell me, why did we look a yard quicker AFTER Noble went off? Why did it take this to wake us up? Why did we only look fully committed as a team in the last 15 minutes, by which time General Franco was out on his feet?
We were poor again today. Poor in a different way than against Manchester United but poor nevertheless. The team lacks leadership on and off the pitch and, outside of Diamanti, is utterly and completely predictable in everything it does. As an opposition manager, you say press them in their own half and they will give away possession. Don't worry about being stretched because they have no pace up front and try to run with the ball rather than pass it anyway. Stay compact down the centre and there is no threat, they won't ever try to get to the byline to knock in a cross. Want something to sum us up? The pathetic failure to cross it from the left in the 85th minute of the match. Parker, Collison and Dyer passed it back to each other three times and you could have thrown a towel over the three of them as each stopped and came inside - and none of them tried to overlap because none of them wanted the responsibility of crossing off their left foot. If it is so bloody obvious what are failings are, why doesn't Zola change it? Had Diamanti been on the left, the ball could have come into the box and, who knows, Dyer might have come in from the right to smack it home.
It's not rocket engineering is it?
Ratings: Green 6 - Faubert 5, Tomkins 6 Gabbidon 6, Ilunga 5 - Diamanti 5, Parker 5, Kovac 5, Noble 4, Stanislas 5 - Franco 6 Subs: Dyer 6, Collison 5, Nouble (Not on long enough to rate).
Haha loving it... we battered u lot. Up the Blues xx
ReplyDeleteI didn't think you played that badly to be honest. We are very tight at the back, but you had a few chances and on another day you may have grabbed a point.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you'll stay up.
This is gonna be a frustrating transfer window...we have to find a way to get rid of our overpriced deadwood and get some players..we can't players who will be gauranteed successes because who will want to play for WH in our form? I think we need to make transfers with the same mentality of Curbs back when he first came..experienced players..we need a Lucas Neill, and we need an experienced winger. Zola has to stop being an Arsene Wenger wannabe and be a bit more realistic.
ReplyDeleteI dont have a clue what Zola sees in Mark Noble. With Kovac and Parker in midfield it was obvious his job was to get forward. The commentators constantly spoke of the lack of link between the midfield and Franco and the lack of support from our midfield. Noble doesn't get back in time and he doesn't get up into the box in time. Pointless. He should watch Bowyer. I'd have Quashie instead of Noble! At least he scored the winner for MK Dons today.
ReplyDeleteAnd what was the point of getting a yellow for mouthing off? If you care that much Mark, next time Zola picks you say you don't wanna play.
We have Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal (cup) in our next 5 fixtures.
The only positive was that our kit looked nicer with the blue shorts...yes, I'm searching.
West Ham did not play badly at all just Birmingham were the better team. It really frustrates me when a teams excuse is 'we played badly' and they can't give credit to their opposition. The term is 'bad losers'.
ReplyDelete^
ReplyDeletecome on mate we barely had a pop at goal. We were woeful.
The fact is, Birmngham are an ordinary team. You scored because we ave the ball away.
ReplyDeleteI guess we are an ordinary side - but thankfully we have 24 points by being ordinary.
ReplyDeleteI hate to think how many points we'd have if we turned a bit good! ;-)
Anyway - what did you think about the fact that Bowyer didn't celebrate his goal. I thought that showed you respect, I was impressed with him tbh.
You write tripe seriously. We bossed the game today and made you look average. Diamanti had his chances, as did Stanislas. I see your giving Stanislas a hard time but he's impressed in every other game. He didn't have a bad game today either we just dealt with him very well. The only thing your team lacks in is confidence why don't you blog about that?
ReplyDeleteWe had more possession and played away. But counts for nothing if you cant score a goal.
ReplyDeleteI predicted nothing out of this game but 20pts before 1st Jan. Still stand by it but not sure 20pts is enough to get us out of trouble come MAY.
Christ what are we going to do?
I'm sorry Hammersfan - but you didn't lose because you were poor. You lost because Birmingham were the better side. Look at the chances, we thoroughly deserved the win.
ReplyDeleteAs for being ordinary, well - we're 8th. As Joys and Sorrows said, if being ordinary has got us to 8th whilst being...well...whatever you feel West Ham are has got you where you currently sit...I'm all for ordinary!
Good luck for the rest of the season though and I truly hope that you and the rest of the Hammers fans manage to keep your heads up. Your team are going to need it now. I've seen Birmingham in the same position and the way our fans have just given up - we went down. You guys need to band together and, perhaps even take it upon yourself to write some more uplifting articles.
Keep your heads up - bloody good luck to you all. Hopefully we'll be playing you at St. Andrews again next season and I mean that wholeheartedly.
Actually you're going down with Portsmouth.
ReplyDeleteThe Tevez affair coming back to bite your backside.
Feel sorry for them brummies if they think that their team is good they're solid and boring glad I don't pay money to watch that every week As for West Ham they lack team spirit and leadership a motley crew running around whilst the ship sinks
ReplyDeleteHF how have you given Kovac 5? Do you automatically get 5 points for being picked but lose 1 for a sending off re Noble's? As for Birmingham, they thoroughly deserved their victory as they were easily the better team by a country mile. Thanks to their fans who hope we stay up as we're gonna need best wishes with us laying in this self induced coma!!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm no fan of Kovac but I didn't think he had a shocker M2C. Yes he lost Bowyer for the goal but Stanislas was more at fault for giving away the ball. He didn't do anything shockingly bad or wonderfully good. He was below average (average being 6 in my book) in a below average performance. Tell me, without a forward line, how are the rest of the team supposed to function?
ReplyDelete@Deane - As I said, if boring, basic football gets us to 8th whilst more 'exciting' clubs lay far below us in the league.....well.....long live boring, basic football.
