A Cold Wind Blows Through The Boleyn

We can go down. As unpalatable and as unacceptable as that statement is, it bears repeating: we can go down. And more, far more than that, I concluded whilst freezing my knackers off watching our inept surrender against Bolton today, not only CAN we go down, we WILL go down if we perform like that in our remaining home games this season. First half, we were abysmal, defending like blind, one legged three year olds and attacking with all the threat of a toothless pekingese. Second half we improved but, outside of Diamanti, offered no threat to the Bolton goal whatsoever until Stanislas drove his shot against the woodwork. We made Bolton look as good as Man Utd at times and, by halftime, should have been four goals behind.

As I have always argued, it is so much easier analysing a game away from the passion of the arena. Perhaps we were better than we appeared from where I was watching, but I somehow doubt it. Yes Diamanti bought a brilliant save from Jaaskelinaan with that first half free kick, and yes Parker broke into the box with purpose but no end product on two occasions in the second half, and yes Cole had two chances which he shirked in the first half, and yes Diamanti almost bent that other free kick in, but for most of the game we played as individuals, not as a team.

Spector was murdered first half down our left flank; Coyle had clearly watched the game at Old Trafford and sent Bolton out to exploit our vulnerability down that flank. Tomkins was bloody hopeless and was horribly at fault for the second goal, having missed the cross for the first, leaving Davies unmarked to score in the process. Faubert was back to his very worst and Upson might as well have been sitting on his arse (as at Wembley) for all the use he was. Man marking in the box was non existent and there was nobody closing down Bolton players on the fringes of the box either. Our defending in the first 45 was possibly the worst I have seen since that six goal thumping at Reading.

Going forward, we were little better. Parker ran with the ball but did not pass. Dyer repeated the trick when he came on as a substitute. Behrami was terrible all game: his crossing and passing were shocking; if Unreal City want to pay £15m for him, then they can have him! And Kovac? Well, as I said, Bolton players had the freedom of the park in our half and I thought that it was the Czech's job to shield the back four. And as for the front two! Well Cole had his worst game for as long as I can remember and Franco might as well have not turned up for all he contributed. I think it took all of five minutes before supporters around me were calling for him to be replaced. His "shot" over the bar just before he was replaced said it all, although quite why Parker, who was through on goal, stopped and looked for a pass backwards is a mystery to me anyway. But then, seeing Parker's other two shots in the game, I guess he was just acknowledging that trying to score is a pointless exercise for him anyway. And Mido? Well, he looks to me as if the pounds are coming back on. He did nothing of note after replacing Franco.

I will acknowledge that Diamanti scored whilst playing on the right and Stanislas very nearly pinched an equaliser whilst playing on the left, but I still think that the midfield looked even more disjointed once Diamanti was moved on to the wrong flank. Look at how hopeless we were in extra time, reduced to drilling the ball down the middle because we had no natural width down the flanks. The best move in that period came from Bolton who were unlucky, with 10 men, not to score a third when they struck the woodwork.

I left the ground with the complaints of fans ringing in my ears. Upson is already thinking about playing in the Champions League next season apparently, and Cole is dreaming about playing for Arsenal. Arsenal and Chelsea lie in wait and if we play like this, God help us. Thank God Wolves and Burnley lost. But the relegation trap door is wide open and anybody who chooses not to recognise that is a fool. Meanwhile, on the evidence of this game, Davies is head and shoulders better than Cole at leading the line. Perhaps Capello should think again!

Player Ratings: Green 5 (one missed cross, one terrible clearance, no real saves of note) Faubert 4, Tomkins 0, Upson 5, Spector 4; Behrami 4, Kovac 4, Parker 6, Diamanti 8; Cole 5, Franco 3 Subs: Dyer 5, Mido 5, Stanislas 6

Footnote. I came home utterly fed up but life has a way of putting things into perspective. My wife told me of a phone call whilst I was at the game: a close friend has suffered a severe aneurysm and is in a coma in hospital. I do not have a god to pray to but if you could put in a word to yours, it would be appreciated. A very close friend of Tony Gale's sister, Trudi is related to the extended West Ham family. If defeat today buys her recovery, then I am glad Bolton won.

  1. ZOLA is on borrowed time now, especially after that sham of a performance..Worst WESTHAM side for many a year.

  2. I'm inclined to agree Essex. But it was Bolton and they are a bogey team. But then so are Arsenal and Chelsea these days.

  3. Im too cross to comment really.

Our team is full of losers.

  4. Decent review. It was a poor performance from WHU, especially in defence, but then you always struggle to deal with Kevin Davies. I don't know whether it is a mental thing but whether it is Upson or Tomkins, you just cannot deal with Super Kev. Also agree with your assessment of the midfield, especially in the first half, we overran you and with Lee and Wilshere we always looked dangerous on the wings. If Elmander had a shred of confidence in front of goal it could have been all over by HT.

Think you'll have enough to stay up though, there are four or five worse teams than both West Ham and Bolton.

Best of luck in your remaining games.

  5. I hope your relative gets well soon. One doesn't have to believe in a God to pray. You wish and hope and somehow, sometimes, it comes true. More or less like West Ham has to do from now on. Because we have no one who understands strategy and tactics as Zola proved beyond any doubt for me today. Yes, the individual performances (Diamanti's apart) were dismal but we could have won or at least draw this game if only Zola would not insist on picking Franco ahead of Ilan and was willing to acknowledge the fact that Tomkins can't defend. For me Da Costa is a much better and far more experience defender but inexplicably he is not getting any minutes on the field despite some very good performances in the past. And then he makes substitutions bringing in Dyer and Mido to save a game that we are losing 0-2! When was the last time, really Dyer scored a goal or played a game for that matter? You wait until the match is really beyond repair and you make the wrong substitutions! It is really pathetic! Zola has to go. Let's get someone, anyone, who organise this team to avoid relegation. We have enough good players to survive but we need to make a team of them. Zola obviously can't do it! There is no more room left to learn from our mistakes.

  6. HF,
A bit harsh on Kovac. Why Behrami can't do a straight through-ball which is not over-hit I do not know...or shoot. As much as we love Carlton, that chance shows us why he'll never be more than a £10-12m player. He and Parker had opportunities to put their foot through the ball but they didn't.

Tomkins is just not good enough. Spector will do a better job in the middle than him. No way is he better than DaCosta. For Bolton's header, he had time, space, and clear line of sight but he came forward and then could not jump to reach the ball. Watch it over, it's almost funny. The mistake for the other goal also highlights his dopey-ness. He is another Titus Bramble.

Stanislas should learn to give it less of the style and just get the damn ball in, especially when there's 2mins left.

Our defense was a joke; time for Clarke to take some criticism I think.

Hope your family friend has a speedy recovery inshallah.

  7. Best wishes for your friend HF. My wife has seen some amazing recoveries. Yes, you can own the world, but if you lose your health, or even worse, your life, it is of little value. You only leave this world with a clear conscience, little else. Bolton came with a plan & stuck to it. Not like it was a secret either. You either have to fight fire with fire, or up the tempo & get the passing game going, don't hang on the ball. We did nothing really, except try to get free kicks all the time. Too many people had an off day on the same day. Still, gone now, move on. At least we are expected to get nothing next two games. May as well tell the players as i tell the kids some weekends. Go out & enjoy playing football, have a good time, we are expected to lose so do what you like as the game goes on.

  8. A friend in trouble creates a sharp sense of mortality which in many ways makes life more vivid and immediate. We must all give your friend hope!
In a minor way this also sort of applies to West Ham F C and the supporters. The team is badly ailing, possibly dying and probably with no will to live. The doctors are useless,The hospital is in the middle of a clean up and reorganisation. The supporters vividly see this and want some immediate reaction to generate hope

  9. Don't agree with Mido being overweight, he looked lean since I last saw him, I barely recognised him.

I think he will come good, they have got him fit, just needs a run in the team for some vital match practice.

  10. Thanks to all.

9.10, He looked incredibly slim first game, but I thought he looked a little thicker set against the Mancs and yesterday, in the flesh, he looked bulkier. Probably easier to keeep the weight off when playing in the heat of Egypt.

  11. Personnally i think the bolton game was a must win and for the team not to bounce back from the man utd game with a bit of fire in the belly, was disappointing, they didn't look comfortable on the ball as bolton always pressured. bolton are a physical side and we are not. Zola likes to play on the deck but for some reason we played a long ball game against the tallest back four in the league!?

can;t cristise green, diamanti, Tomkins and behrami, thought those boys played well, but to win games you need the whole team to be onm form.

how on earth did that asian bloke LEE get so much time on the ball?!!! i would of man marked him all game, get kovac up his arse and give a few kicks to slow him down.

also how long did it take the ref to book Jussi for all that time wasting?! he was constantly picking the ball up went round the goal place the ball down, walk so slow to the line tehn "jog" to kick the ball? 88minutes! joke!

we didn't deserve to win yesterday, otter shambles...

look on the bright side... there are 2 places left for relegation, pompey set to go, but you have got bolton, us, Sunderland, Hull, Wolves and Burnley.... 2 have got to go and i feel quite confident that we'll JUST survive this year.

i feel that the next 10 games will be zola's last and i think a mutual termination will be shortley due.

we WILL Get Stratford Stadium and have an Olympic Affliation for rebranding.

"West Ham Olympic" (personally i dont mind the name change, we'll always be WEST HAM how often do you hear us say united? if anything our bubbles song at the end will change to "Olympic CLAP CLAP CLAP, Olympic CLAP CLAP CLAP"!)

I expect Mark Hughes to be a our next manager, with old friend Steve Clarke to continue his role, with departures of:
Green, Parker, Cole, Dyer, Collison, Gabbidon and Faubert...(roughly sold for £35m)
    And imports of:
Lewis/Hart, O'Hara, Zamora, Bentley, L.Young, ...(roughly £22m) Couple of loan signings with full contract offered to Mido. Looking at the Bosman's for next season we could do the inmpossible and sign Joe Cole & Jamie Carragher? who knows.

so my predicted "W.H.O" Will Be:

    Mark Hughes Manager
    Steve Clarke Assistant Manager

    Lewis/Hart
    Illunga
    Upson
    Tomkins
    L.Young
    Bentley
    o'Hara
    Behrami
    Noble
    Zamora
    McCarthy

    Subs:
    Stech
    Daprela
    Spector
    Kovac
    Stanislas
    Mido
    Hines

    Welcome to season 2010/2011...

  12. First of all good luck to your friend, hope she makes a full recovery.
A bit of a shock the Wanderers winning like that but more so the fact that we are actually looking like a much better team. Owen Coyle has got us believing in ourselves again. Elmander just needs a goal, Kevin Davies should be playing for England, with good service he is un-stoppable. If he played for any of the bigger clubs i have no doubt whatsoever that he would be off to South Africa this year.
I think on the whole WHUFC have enough to stay up, Burnley, Hull, Wigan easily worse than you and us.
Keep the faith, we are getting used to these relegation scraps now.
    ~See you all next season.

  13. Bolton fans seem like a nice bunch based on their replies on here! Fair play guys!

WHR, could you really afford to spend all that time away from Championship Manager? Cole and Carragher? There's more chance of Jesus playing up front for us next season! Mind you, with the current team he would be a pointless signing anyway. Nobody to supply him with a cross!
