Offload Upson to Sunderland and Bring Home Anton.

Good to hear that Grant has offered his public backing to Rob Green and said that he only wants to keep Upson if he is committed to the club. I was not alone, last season, in thinking that Upson was on cruise control for much of the season, pacing himself for the World Cup campaign.

Of course, that all blew up in his face when he was initially overlooked and then showed against Germany why he should never have been selected in the first place. He is a long way away from being a yard dog, but he is just as far away from being a quality international defender.

Slightly above mediocre is enough to make him the best centre half at the club at present, but if Sunderland are really willing to pay £7m for him, then I would let him go. In fact, I would ask for £5m plus Anton - and I reckon Bruce might just go for that.

Who else could we buy for £5m? Dutch, if you read this, have you got any suggestions? It don't take a lot to be a no nonsense centre back does it? If only we had retained Collins, this wouldn't be an issue!

  1. why on earth would we want to replace a Slightly above mediocre player with a shit one, is it so we can have another crap season like last year after buying crap players

  2. Do you think Villa might swap Collins for Parker cos I'd take that esp if we sign KP Boateng and/or Dorrans

  3. No way! I think we should pay money, if we have to, not to have Anton back! You are not serious, really. Even Tomkins is better than Anton. No thank you. This is like a bad joke. Forget it! We have enough problematic defenders, we don't need another one.

  4. Come on Sav, Perkins in not better than Anton!

I admit, we can probably do with better than Anton but I really believe that if he was given a run of games he'd be decent. Bruce has hardly played him, and when he has, it's been Rback, Lback and holding midfield.

We should just put a big offer in for Alex from Chelsea. Grant's worked with him, he may come with all the defenders in front of him there. He's quality and would be first choice at most other clubs.

  5. It depends on how much he is valuing Anton, but with a figure of 7million for Upson then I would pay in effect 2million for Anton all day long. He flurished this year in the full back role, and is no doubt a better defender than Faubert. As for 5 million centre backs, here are a few.... Bougherra from Rangers, Curtis Davies from Villa, Antar Yahia from Bochum (Algerian player of the year 209),Rafik Halliche Benfica, Douglas FC Twente (maybe a bit more than 5million). All would be great buys and realsitic.

  7. Stani, I still remember horror shows by Anton playing for West Ham (such as the 7-0 thrashing by Reading) and Gabbidon playing next to him by the way. He is not playing at Sunderland for a reason. He is no good! He is liable to let in goals all the time. We really do not need to return to those times. Sunderland realised their mistake and want to get rid of him by sending him back to us. No thank you. We surely can do better. Almost anyone is better!

  8. Sav, he was a regular at Sunderland but got injured. When he was fit again someone had taken his place which happens all the time. Sunderland were on fire whilst Anton was in the side. I'm not saying he's great but neither are Upson and Perkins.

Gabbidon and Da Costa to start! :)
