The Players Went In Two by Two, The Forwards, the Midfielders and the Defenders Too!

(Submitted by Marty!)

As the flood waters rose inexorably around Avram Grant today, he battled to reorganise his defensive planks in an attempt to stop the goals going in three by three along with the monkeys. Today is the first of the “days of awe” apparently and as atonement day approaches, Grant has thought about it and decided that at the next opportunity to launch his premier ship, he won’t do any work at all, he’ll make himself feel physically unwell and spend most of the day with his head in his hands. So how’s that different from any other Saturday?

When asked whether having presided over the worst start in West Ham history, his action might seem to ignore our position in the premiership table he said that we were not bottom of the table as the premiership was only six hours old. It had definitely not descended by natural selection from the old first division and anyway tables were just scientific mumbo jumbo. Awesome.

  1. OK so I don't like religions, but what practical harm can it do?

Well let's have a look at that shall we? The lower the level of education, the higher the religious conviction and you don't get much lower than the education standard of most footballers. So it follows that there will be an above average religious belief among footballers and this is borne out by the rise in fundamentalism amongst Brazilian stars. Importantly, most top footballers come from Catholic countries.

I doubt whether many Catholics would object to playing for a Jewish manager if he was a tribal jew (someone who like most christians still has a day off at christmas and easter but doesn't give much thought to the religious significance of the holiday). But Avram Grant has put himself out of that bracket and into the "actively religious" envelope. Most English managers and players do not get a proper christmas day due to the matches on Boxing day, but mostly being "tribal" christians they just move their celebration meal and get on with the job they're paid to do. Furthermore, Gold by authorising Grant's absense for the Stoke game has added to the perception that West Ham is a "Jewish" club.

We seemed to have a good deal of difficulty persuading players to join in the summer and I have no idea whether Grant's being a Jew had any significance in this; I hope not. But after such a high profile affirmation of his beliefs I think it will have a genuine effect on some of our efforts to sign players in the future. Oh well we can always sign Isreali internationals I suppose.
