Back on September 11th 2002 (the date should have been a warning!) West Brom, everybody's pre season favourite for the drop, came to Upton Park. The season had not started well with a 4-0 thumping at Newcastle, a 2-2 home draw against Arsenal and a 2-0 reverse at home to relegation candidates Charlton. Before the West Brom game, I said to my best mate, a Tottenham fan, that if we lost, there would be no coming back, relegation was a nailed on certainty. And I had a damn uneasy feeling about the fixture.
Our team that day read: James, Schemmel, Winterburn, Cisse, Repka, Breen, Sinclair, Cole, Kanoute, Di Canio and Carrick. The midfield and forward line would walk into our current team, and Defoe was sitting on the sub's bench for good measure!
We lost, of course.
The very first time I saw West Ham play was on the 23rd of August 1969 against.... West Brom. Our team that day read: Ferguson; Bonds, Charles, Peters, Stephenson, Moore, Lindsay, Boyce, Bennett, Hurst and Sissons. Bonds, Peters, Moore, Boyce, Hurst and Sissons would all walk into our current team.
We lost, of course. 1-3. I saw Hurst score but there was nothing else to cheer. I should have known then, at the tender age of 10, that supporting West Ham was going to be a generally painful business!
The mere mention of West Brom makes me shudder. They feel like a bogey team to me, although the record book shows that it couldn't be more even. We've played them 92 times in total since our first meeting in January 1913 and we have won 37 and drawn 18, with West Brom coming out on top 37 times themselves. We have netted 146 times and the Baggies 148.
The trouble is, we HAVE to win tomorrow, whereas for West Brom, anything more than a point is a bonus. The pressure will be on us, and as we showed on Saturday, we don't cope well with pressure. As in 2002, I have a bad feeling about this one, and if the result is the same, I would put my mortgage on us going down. The Newcastle game felt like a must win match; if we lose against the Baggies too, we might as well accept the inevitable!
Don't you think it's a little bit sick to equate the loss of thousands of lives through a terrorist attack, including a photo of the event, to the potential outcome of a football match?
ReplyDeleteSeriously, engage your brain before you post.
AW
I would have put my mortgage on a sentimental so and so giving you stick for the touchy subject. I love the way people pretend to be offended and fail to understand the sort of society we live in today. You probably laugh your socks off at Frankie Boyle and Jimmy Carr.
ReplyDeleteMoron, it is the date. The date! The Date! September the 11th, the last time West Brom won at Upton Park in the Premiership, the season when we went down! Don't blame me, blame the bloody computer that produced the fixture! THAT is why it would be NINE ELEVEN all over again!
ReplyDeleteDear God, I knew there would be one utter pillock with political correctness crawling out of his arse like piles on steriods! And as for the picture, it is EVERYWHERE on the net you fool!
As for equating the two events, the parallels are irresistable surely? There were twelve terrorists on the planes and if West Brom only use one sub tomorrow, they will use twelve players - and they could all be Muslims for all we know. In all probability, Di Matteo is a member of al Queda (he looks a bit suspect to me!) whilst the Baggies' fanzine may well be renamed Al Jazeera overnight. I bet the players fly into London too! In fact when Bush's mates were waterboarding Khalid Sheikh Mohammed he apparently kept saying Boing Boing, as he coughed up the water, which has a curious similarity to the plane manufacturers Boeing so West Brom's Boing Boing is obviously a celebration of Nine Eleven. And it was two Boeings that hit into the Twin Towers and there were famously twin towers at Wembley and in 1923 West Ham were the first team to play at Wembley so the link is becoming irresistable!
Spot on TIS!
ReplyDeleteActually there were 19 were there not?
ReplyDeleteIn total, but that includes those on the other two planes.
ReplyDeleteisnt this site server in the u.s ???
ReplyDeletetry telling them this isnt offensive!!!!
you say its got to do with whu v wb then show a pic of that you moron
The only thing that scares me is Green in the Net, and i am AMERICAN
ReplyDelete2021, I think you will find that the majority of Americans are a little bit more intelligent than you appreciate!
ReplyDeleteIsn't Google an American company? Try posting Twin Towers into Google images! Bloody disgrace! Fry the CEO of Google after detaining him in Guantanamo Bay and waterboarding him to discover who financed the company!
ReplyDeletedon't give him the satisfaction people, he constantly does this provocative shite to get exactly this response. Most fans will just be hoping for a win tomorrow to try and kick start our season...saying that it may nearly be too little too late already. I agree that it's another "must win"
ReplyDeleteBugger, damn, blast, provoked into posting again! Damn! Damn! Damn! Why do I fall for it every time! Damn! I'm trapped by the Game! ; ]
ReplyDeleteCockernee scum!!
ReplyDeleteShould be a good game, but i think the Baggies will be too much for ya,specially after our defeat to Man city, think Dorrans will be playing, bet he's so glad he never left us to go to you.Boing Boing.
