Yapping Lawton nibbles at Sullivan's ankle

I've just read Lawton's Open Letter to Sullivan in the Independent and I must say it lacks any real bite. I was expecting a pit bull style savaging and instead found only the pathetic yapping of a toy poodle.

James LawtonIf Lawton wants to attack Sullivan then he should hone in on the selling of the Boleyn, not the dismissal of a couple of managers in the space of 12 months. The point is, Grant's most savage critics argue that Sullivan and Gold invested sufficiently in the side for Grant to avoid relegation, and most of the "experts" acknowledge that we were "too good to go down". So Sullivan can hardly be blamed for our relegation nor for dismissing the man who most West Ham fans hold most accountable for it.

Zola failed as a manager; only the blinkered try to argue otherwise; and Grant failed too. And what do you do in football when managers fail? You sack them. Sullivan and Gold are hardly unique here. Indeed Lawton praises the West Brom chairman for offloading di Matteo when it became obvious to him that he lacked the necessary ability to keep the Baggies up.

It seems as if Lawton only understands one solution when a team starts to struggle - sack the manager and sack him quickly. So his logic seems to be that we would have stayed up had Grant been shown the door in January. Well, that didn't work for Hull last year did it? And at least two of Wolves, Birmingham, Wigan and Blackpool are going to survive this year, so sticking with the manager will work for two of them and maybe even three if Blackburn, who changed the manager, drop. So Lawton's logic is fundamentally flawed. And of course, had Lawton been in charge at Manchester United a couple of decades back, a certain Ferguson would have lost his job had his logic been applied!

Lawton's article rambles and betrays churlishness and intellectual snobbery. I hate that saying "You can't buy class" because the user of the phrase assumes he has it when he passes that judgement, and the very use of the cliche betrays a total lack of class. It is piss poor journalism and an insipid "attack".

  1. Actually in the last couple of days, all of the critics that I've read have all said that Zola got us to 9th with a weaker team in comparison, with some going so far as to say we should have kept him and Clark on.

  2. If I was Martin O'Neill, I'd want a lot more than £4m to sign on for the job at WHU. I disagree with you HF on the Lawton article - think it does a good job of attacking the owners 'style', although I never expected any 'class' from somebody who thinks it worthwhile to rescue the 'Sunday Sport'. I don't expect to read about the ins and outs of their dealings in Lawton article, now that would be a real scoop for sure.

  3. LOL AJ So let's ignore what Zola did in his second season then!

  4. LOL!?! Erm they kept us up didn't they? They should have been given longer and more funds. You know Clarke is doing well at the Reds don't you? you also know that Zola is being lined up for a Chelsea position too? Don't reckon you should be laughing. You should be apologising for supporting AV and ridiculing all those who said he was rubbish from the off.

  5. No they didn't keep us up! Our points total last season would have relegated us this season! As for the Dynamic Duo's performances elsewhere, Clarke is riding on the back of the Dalglish factor. Let's see if that can be sustained next season. 'Arry put the recent Liverpool revival neatly into prespective at the weekend.

And Zola? has he been appointed yet? And if he is, in what capacity? You can bet your life it won't be as manager. He may make a good Youth Team coach, but Prem manager, not on your nelly!

And just because they do OK apart, it doesn't mean they work well together as a combination. Both are number two's at best!

As for Avram, what do I have to apologise for? Did I appoint him? No.

  6. With all due respect I am pretty sure we did stay up..... which means they kept us up. How can you dispute that?

  7. Very easily. There's a fox that visits my garden every night because my wife feeds him. He survived all last year but not because my wife fed him, he would have found enough food to live regardless.

Also Audley Harrison survived for a number of years as a boxer, but only because he was matched against yard dogs. None of Burnley, Portsmouth nor Hull featured in the top 6 of the Championship this season, that shows how poor they were. Previous season, the division was won by Newcastle, with West Brom second, both of whom had been relegated the season before. Zola's team were the Audley Harrison of the Prem. With three fall guys in the ring, they couldn't lose! The trouble is, those fall guys were replaced by real teams, only one of whom may drop.

Zola didn't keep us up, three very, very, very poor teams finished below Zola's very, very poor team!

  8. Sorry you'll have to explain that again. I am from Bali and have no idea who Mr Harrison is and as for the fox who knows what would have happened, the fact that he is alive would suggest that your wife has some part in that by giving him food. I suspect the fox is not stupid and comes to your wife because she is easy, he probably has a family to feed as well so your wife is responsible for keep not just Mr Fox happy and his whole family. Your wife is need a woman to behold. I am still a little confused by your statement "No they didn't keep us up!" for which there is only one conclusion; we went down. Which I, the fox and Mr Harrison all know is not to be true.

  9. Mr Harrison is a useless boxer mate. Have been over this ground so many times. Wedidn't go down because there were three very weak teams in the division. I could have kept West Ham up last season as a result. Avram would have kept us up. Even Dowie would have kept us up!

  10. Are you genuinely from Bali? I spent some of my honeymoon in Bali. Drove inland to a beautiful lake nestled beneath mountains. Can't remember the name.

  11. AJ,
HF's whole argument is based on the idea that we did not improve our squad this season. Fact is, we did, hence his argument is flawed because if the league is stronger so is our squad! Yet we have done worse! He continues to argue the league was weaker last season when in truth we just cannot compare. There are too many variables, and simply using the fixed system of 0 points for a loss, 1 for a draw and 3 for a win does not take account of these variables.

    Right HF?

And even if he does compare, his own index will come to answer him on who was the better manager, Zola or Grant. This was a index HF made up, called the Grantazola index, to compare the two managers.

  12. I will address all of that in the upcoming series of articles Stani, worry not.

  13. Lake Batur I imagine, with the active volcano? this is the biggest and most beautiful one and only reachable by boat. Second lake is Bratan - or Lake Buyan and Lake Tamblingan which used to be one big lake but separated by a land slide.

I liked Zola but didn't like Avram - I think Zola should have been given more time just Ferguson was.

Unfortunately in this day and age people want instant gratification - you see it all the time with the young people and that's why there are so many godless, unhappy and more importantly unsatisfied people in the world. It's why the youth cause so much violence and why you can't control them - they don't want to wait, the don't want to be patient, they want it now - and who can blame them when we the elders show them that it's ok to get rid of someone just because they have one bad season?

If people weren't in such a rush for this instant gratification the world would be a much happier place.

  14. I can't rmember to be honest mate but it was certainly beautiful. Also stopped off and visited some baboons who promptly stole my hat and made it very clear that if I tried to claim it back, I would come off second best! Very aggressive characters! So how comes you support West Ham in Bali?

  15. We get lots of premiership games on TV and some very good friends, ex pats are from Leytonstone, Wanstead and Woodford which I believe are all eastern London - I didn't want to support Manchester united and at 48 I was very aware of West Hams history.

  16. Good on you mate! So where in Bali do you live?

As a Newcastle fan I have nothing but respect for Hughton. He always handles himself with dignity and in my opinion saved my club. I think he would do a great job at West Ham and would get them back up where they belong at the 1st time of asking.
