What is it with Piquionne and red cards?

I'm not convinced Piquionne is worth a place on our bench following the recruitment of Carew and Baldock but you have to say that the guy is bloody unlucky when it comes to red cards. Last season he was shown red for celebrating that goal at Everton and the one he collected on Saturday was just as absurd. Yes there was a marginal coming together but there was no malice, no punch, hardly even a nudge. If the FA don't rescind that card then the appeals system is a joke!

You have to wonder what Piquionne has done to upset the referees union. Fly tipped in their front garden perhaps?

  1. You presume that referees in England are in any way competent or just. Please don't get me started about referees. You know what I think. They destroy everything we love about football. Did you see Web giving the goalkeeper at Fulham only a yellow card for a challenge that could have killed the poor Blackburn player who had the courage to head the ball ahead of him (a clear goal scoring opportunity too). And to give Piquione a red card for play acting by the Portsmouth defender is beyond belief.

  2. Come off it, Schwartzer had eyes on the ball. He didn't try to take the guy out. These things happen.

  3. I can't stand those players who hit the deck as soon as anyone raises a hand, (Joey Barton springs to mind). Seems to me a football player is the last person you'd want on your side in a ruck.

  4. i remember our very own dean ashton went in with a naughty challenge and broke schwarzers cheekbone on the way to the fa cup final. things like this happen for and against every player over the course of a career. as for piquionne i don't care if he is suspended, atleast he can't be named on the bench then, although arms raised anything above the shoulders is an automatic red wether its a punch, slap or push, they are the rules. retrospective bans for play acting has to be introduced, its cheating to win key decisions to win or loose games, simple as, start giving out 3 math bans and it will soon stop

  5. That's the thing though HF, you cannot raise your hands.

Come on Daz, Ashton's challenge was completely accidental and innocuous.

  6. There are reports on other blogs this am that Piq was reacting to racist comments. Perhaps that is why we are appealing the card.

Anybody else hear anything on it?

  7. I heard a bit about it. Can't remember where, but apparently there is microphone evidence of a racist comment.

It's clear on the replay that the Pompey defender says something. When Piq stops and turns to walk away from the goal, his head is down, he doesn't know he is walking towards the player until he hears whatever the other guy said. A push in the face deserves a red, but if I was in Piq's shoes and someone said a racist comment to me, I would have done the same. Or at least decked the fella and made the red card worth-while.

  8. 23:36 make you right Mike - you wouldn't want HF on your side either
