Noble Comes Out of the Shadows

For so long an unrealised talent, the enigma that is Mark Noble appears to have come out of the shadows at long, long last. His admirers have wondered why the young man, who played second fiddle so brilliantly  to Tevez in the Great Escape, has been in the doldrums for so long, his game drifting seemingly aimlessly. Others have cruelly written him off as the latest nearly man of the Academy: too slow, too limited and too..thless.

Well the real Mark Noble has now stood up. And whilst his critics will argue that he has simply found his level in the Championship, I beg to differ. Watch him now that he is allowed to run the show instead of playing in the shadow of Parker or Nolan. He is everywhere and the hub of everything we do. He wants the ball. He looks for the ball. He demands the ball. He fights for the ball. He hunts the ball. He chases the ball. And best of all, he uses the ball.

Unlike Parker, he plays with his head up. Unlike Parker, he makes killer passes. Unlike Parker he makes assists. Unlike Nolan, he plays for the team. Unlike Nolan he has a range of passing. Unlike Nolan he competes for every minute of every game.

At last Noble is the main man. At last a manager has said to him, "Ok, it's your show, so show us what you can do" rather than "Remember you are second fiddle to Parker or Nolan". And boy is Noble responding! Who won the penalty against Southampton? Noble. Who scored the penalty? Noble. Who took the freekick that led to Cole's goal against Millwall? Noble. Who assisted Tomkins goal against Blackpool? Noble. Who took the free kick that led to O'Neil's goal? Noble.

It's time for his critics to reassess and admit they may be wrong. Peters, who knows a bit about playing in midfield, suggested last week that Noble might yet have a future in the England team. I doubt it personally, but as his confidence grows...well how many caps does Gareth Barry have to his name? One thing is still lacking - goals from open play. Nail that and he could start to look very special!

Providing Allardyce doesn't relegate him to second fiddle as soon as Nolan is available of course!

  1. I agree with every single word here... Last year I thought to myself that Collison looked like the best bet to become the new shining star in midfield, if correctly coached and advised. I am changing my mind now and beleive Noble is on fire and showing immense possibilities and potential.

And yes, he has freed up with the departure of Parker and the sidelining of Nolan.

  2. I've been a long time fan of Noble, and I am so happy to see him doing so well and getting recognised for it.

Surely not coincidence that people have noticed this most over the last three games, when we have been missing a certain other midfielder...

  3. I agree with all of that and also think Collison could develop the same way if given a run in the middle.

  4. I agree too, though I'm hoping that Collison can continue to improve too and show more of the promise that was so evident before his long injury lay off.

  5. I've been one of nobles biggest critics over the years and the way he is playing now proves absolutely that I was right to criticise him. He's obviously capable as he is showing now, for far too long he did not do the business. The way he is playing now proves that any criticism was justified because if he's capable of doing it now, he was capable of doing it then.

  7. Xavi and Iniesta don't get many goals from open play. Does that mean they are not good midfielders?

So I'll butt in on this one. Have you seen the pictures of Barton and the England top?

How much longer do we R's have to suffer being linked witht this graceless buffoon?

  10. It's a fair point even if it is kinda obvious. More interesting now I think is what will BFS do once Nolan is eligible to play again...? I don't think there's much doubt he'll come straight back into the side, although I guess he may start on the bench. This is a key passage in the season and I guess we'll find out what BFS is really made of.

  11. i didn't get all the noble haters going on about pace all the time. did scholes have pace, the greatest english cm of our generation, no, if he did its been long gone now he is pushing on 38, does murphy or david dunn have pace, none at all and they have been two of the best cms for their teams, xavi has no pace, alonso has no pace. the two best pssing cm's of our generation. now he may lack consistency or the skill/ability to be in the mold of xavi but they are never the argument against him, its always pace, pace, pace like people are rating him on fifa 12 or something. its 4.30 and my local had a 80p vodka and coke night so excuse the spelling
