The decision to sell Mutch to Cardiff for a paltry £1m says everything that needs to be said about the plight of the club. There's a certain irony in the fact that Cardiff are the buying club, given they too are owned by a far east outfit, but their owners, of course, have not been charged with money laundering...yet! Just kit laundering - "I don't understnd it, the shirts went in blue and came out red!"
Where now for Birmingham? Well it looks like the only way is down. These are dark, dark days for a club that only the season before last lifted the Carling Piss Pot. I have no love for the Blues but I would not wish this upon their fans.
And to think, Birmingham fans were delighted when Sullivan and Gold sold out. Just shows, you must be careful what you wish for!
As a Blues fan, I wasn't happy when Sullivan and Gold left. The takeover having taken so long was bad news from the beginning, and despite a few problems along the way, G&S took the club to the Premier League and increased its stature a great deal. They also made the club fairly self-sustaining, which is pretty good going for a club that never won trophies or had Europe money.
ReplyDeleteEven so, I still felt somewhat optimistic about the upcoming season, even after Hughton left, until I read about Mutch just now. It's a real sucker punch because it came from out of nowhere. Nobody seriously entertained the idea that he might leave, and to a Championship rival to boot. Davies, Burke, Redmond, Foster and Butland were all expected to go, but not Mutch. Now it's clear that it's a real firesale and pretty soon we'll be left with nothing more than four U18s and Zigic on his £50k a week. Happy times.
(I should add that I know that most fans were happy when Gold and Sullivan left, I just wasn't one of them.)
ReplyDeleteWith you in that. Didn't know their finances/financiers were in a mess.
ReplyDeleteGood luck to their fans though.
Just think,Brum were close to a Championship Play-off Final against the Hammers. Many West Ham fans were glad that their opponents in the final were Blackpool and not their bogey side Birmingham City. Good luck to the Blues fans.
