Allardyce - A PR Puppet With No Mind Of His Own

So, is Allardyce a PR puppet with no mind of his own? Does he pick the team to satisfy Sullivan and Gold's obsession with media management? Does the "right image" take precedence over winning games and achieving Premiership survival? Is Allardyce being paid a bonus to keep the fans happy rather than keeping West Ham in the Premiership?

As ludicrous as that sounds, West Ham fans repeatedly level that charge. Two contributors to this site regularly suggest that Allardyce is a doormat that the owners and PR bods wipe their feet on. Gold steps out of his Rolls and Allardyce, apparently, lays down like a red carpet and begs, "Please walk all over me". When he is about to name his team, Allardyce scurries along to the owners' offices, it seems, and asks, "Is that team alright for you boss or should I make any changes? Anybody in particular you would like to see in the team? Have I got the balance right to suit the image you are seeking to project? Would Her Royal Highness Brady like me to make any changes perhaps? Just name the player and I will pick him, regardless of his suitability and ability."

It's a delicious image, to be honest. Mr Ego himself, humbled and craven, down on his chest in front of Brady, his arse lifted in the air, wagging an imaginary tail. This is a man who compared himself to Jose and argued he was really the "Special One". This is the man who claimed he should be managing Real Madrid or Barcelona. This is the man who put himself forward for the England job, expecting to be appointed despite advocating tactics that would have taken the national team back into the Dark Ages. This is the man who mocked West Ham fans and the idea of the West Ham way, telling the world that the West Ham way had won nothing except relegation. But this is the man who picks players because of their PR appeal, apparently.

Tell that to Tomkins. Who predicted his replacement with Reid? If Allardyce selected his team to please West Ham fans and to pay homage to the Academy heritage, surely Tomkins would be one of the first names on the team sheet. Odd that this craven Allardyce ignores all that and picks the unpopular Reid ahead of home grown JT isn't it?

But, apparently, Allardyce completely changes personality when it comes to Mark Noble. He doesn't rate him as a player apparently - how could he, the guy is crap - he simply picks him to keep the owners, fans and the PR gurus happy. And not only does he pick him, he gives him a key role in the team and uses him as his set piece taker, even though the guy is totally hopeless. Each Friday, after training, Allardyce picks his team and says to himself, "I'll include Noble because he is West Ham through and through and the fans love him. It was a great bit of PR on Tuesday when he talked about the move to the Olympic Stadium, with PR control like that, he has to take the corners!"

The argument is absurd when you look at it like that, but still people persist in claiming that Noble is only in the team because he is a yes man. With Grant, you might buy that. With Zola you certainly would. But with Allardyce? And, indeed, with Curbishley? Come on, get real!

So, is Noble in the team ahead of Diarra and Benayoun because Allardyce fancies his PR skills, or does Allardyce value what Noble brings to the team? The answer is so bloody obvious that the question is farcical. Perhaps, just perhaps, Noble's critics should start asking themselves why the guy is preferred to a man who recently captained the French national team, and start looking for his positives rather than jumping on any and every mistake he makes in a game. That might be the more logical position to take rather than this stupid argument that Allardyce turns into a compliant pussy every time the insertion of the Mark One Dildo is demanded by Gold and Sullivan!

  1. Well done! Of all the drivel on the internet you have gone above and beyond and created the most moronic article I've read in a long, long time. That's something to be proud of achieving at least.

  3. noble is in the team ahead of diarra for 2 reasons, one, we stuck with a winning team, that includes taylor, o'brien and vaz te who could all be argued should of been dropped, second big sam dosen't play half fit players, diarra hasn't played any club football for 6 month and yossi is in the same situation

  5. I'm a Leeds fan that cannot stand this tit! Just look back at his post on the 11th of sept, completely praises noble a whole article in fact! Even finished to say who needs Parker!! Ha ha then goes on to say this! Absolute joke of an apparent football fan!!

  6. You've got it completely wrong HF. I'm saying Allardyce is being fooled by the PR master Noble, just like many of our fans. I am not saying that Allardyce is a yes man.

Do you want to redo this post?

Question for you HF: Is Mark Noble a better player for our team than Alou Diarra or Yossi Benayoun?

  7. Watch the aftermath of Noble's foul on the left of our box giving away a dangerous free-kick near the end of the game. He knew his challenge was utterly daft, so to fool those looking on and the officials, he start throwing his arms up and running to the linesman aghast as to why he had been penalised. Of course the replay showed it was an obvious and clear foul, and Nobes knew this, but he had to portray another image didn't he and he knew he had cocked up?

I think those that realise what Noble is, are like the patriot in Mark Twain's famous quote:

"In the beginning of a change the patriot is a scarce man, and brave, and hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot."

  8. Stani, your point remains absurd. You suggest that Allardyce is blinded by Nobles image to the point where he cannot see his failings on a football pitch. Do you believe that a manager with Sam's experience could be so easily fooled? Think about it, that's stupid. Every player has weaknesses, but you weigh those against the strengths, and Curbishley, Zola, Grant and Allardyce have all accommodated Noble in the team. Are you seriously suggesting that all four shared the same blindness where Noble is concerned?

I haven't seen the game or the foul, but time and again I complained about Parker giving away stupid fouls in dangerous positions; but he was hailed a genius by our fans and was in the England team at the Euros. Why? Because he offers other things. Not enough, in my opinion, to justify the legend that is Scotty Parker, but enough certainly to merit a place in the West Ham teams of Grant and Zola.

It is my contention that Noble offers more than Parker. His passing range is better, his control of the play in advanced positions is better, his link up play is more progressive. Yes he is slower than we would like, yes his concentration lapses, yes he makes some clumsy challenges, and yes he does not score enough goals, but he offers plenty of other things in compensation, including leadership.

We will continue to disagree on his merits but to claim that four consecutive managers have persisted with him based on his reputation and Noble's ability to presnt himself well is crass. That is the point of tthis thread and whether you are claiming that Allardyce is personally blinded by the sheen of Noble, or is blinded by the polishing of the owners is irrelevant. Allardyce picks him on merit. End of.

  10. I pay for a premium service for stats for my website and Stani, if you saw his stats compared to the rest, you would then realise how much work he does.

I am actually going to make a post to actually prove this points, as you are not the only person who does not rate Noble. BUT you are entitled to your opinion, and I respect that.

  11. Which kind of stats are we talking about here Rex? Do please let us know when you post. See, we all know stats can be very deceptive. If you saw match of the day you'd have seen them put up specific goalkeeper stats with Jussi at 3 and Hart bottom. But who is the better keeper? If they're stats like how many passes he's done then they hold no weight in my eyes as short sideways passes boost that statistic but in reality are not very influential.

Yes of course, as are you entitled to your opinion. I just want the best for my team, despite what HF thinks. I don't care who it is, but if he played like Noble then I wouldn't want him in.

  12. How's it absurd HF? I've been over this before regarding what Noble does. The guy is a master. And you should know about the concept of teacher's pet too. Managers are human, they fall for it. Large parts of our fan base have, why not them?

  13. Why Stani, because Allardyce lives and breathes stats. Because he has every game analysed from every point of view. Because he knows how many yards each player has run, how many effective tackles he has made, how many free kicks he has conceded, how many free kicks he has won, his % pass completion rate etcetera etcetera. He knows his players inside out and, as he has proved with Tomkins, is not scared of kicking a sacred cow.

I can't believe your dismissal of short paces that go sideways or backwards. You sound like an unsophisticated version of Allardyce! Swansea passed and passed and passed again against us, and we were tonked. Ball retention is crucial at the top level and Noble is getting better and better at it. Wake up! Put your prejudice to one side! Look for what he offers instead of leaping on anything approximating to a mistake. You quote Noble giving away a freekick against Norwich, yet you fail to mention Collins giving away a free kick in a much more central position. Why?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Football is not just statistics HF. Being so proficient in this aspect hasn't got Allardyce very far has it? If he's so good at it and if it's so important, why's he not one of the best managers around?

If he has every game analysed from every point of view, what is the basis of your past criticism of him? Surely you'd be giving him a less hard time? He knows what he's doing right?

What nonsense HF. Because I don't believe in pointless short or backward passes I automatically believe in long ball? I was going to mention this point above but I thought I wait because I knew this was coming. Shearer did a piece analyzing Liverpool's Joe Allen on match of the day. All the guy did was pass sideways and backwards. That's fine but when you see what it does then you can see why it is so frustrating to have such a player. THIS is what you fail to see. Strikers get frustrated. The opposition is able to regroup and get into position. Crucial forward passing, chance creating opportunities are lost. Shearer then did a direct comparison of Allen with Gerrard in the same game and there was the difference ...point was made.

You're comparing Collins with Noble? Nonsensical point, not even worth addressing.
