The Day When Leeds United Triggered England World Cup Exit

October 17, 1973. Brian Clough told Brian Moore that Tomaszewski  was a clown and Ramsey stupidly selected Hunter ahead of the great Bobby Moore for the must win World Cup Wembley qualifier against Poland - and the rest is history.

Clarke, despite scoring from the spot, missed a hatful of chances and Hunter stood on the ball on the touchline, enabling Lato to break free, pass to Domarski and...

It was a horror night for England but if you want a trip down memory lane...

Very spooky how close the dates of the two games are. Being superstitious, I would never have agreed to a fixture against Poland that has such an obvious echo back to one of the most famous nights in Polish football history. I bet the Poles are exploiting it to the full!

  3. Aha now you've let the cat out of the bag, you're miffed cos bobby Moore didn't get to play, and a Leeds player did, now i understand why all the aggro, you certainly hold a grudge for a long time. HF it's that long ago no one cares anymore, and i bet Bobby Moore certainly doesn't, also i never heard him complain. This is not news by the way.

  7. Can't find any fresh negative Leeds Utd stories to obsess about from your spanish hideout under your cloak of anonymity!?

This post has about as much intellectual class and bravery as West Ham descending the depths of football thuggery aka John Hartson / Eyal Berkovic.

    ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

    Get a ferkin life.

  8. So England were knocked out by the team that eventually finished 3rd, only losing the semi to the eventual winners West Germany on a pitch that was a boating lake. Paul Breitner reckoned that Poland were the best team at the tournament, even better than the Dutch team of Cruyff, Neeskens,et al.

Ramsey was a terrible manager wasn't he? What did he ever win?

  12. Shut up trophy dodger! So we would have won if Bobby Moore would have played! This is classless drivel Norman Hunter played because at the time he was better than Moore!

  14. Hf football is a team game, you win and lose as a team! Hunter was a legend for the migty leeds united. He was also was a top player as was Giles, Bremner, Grey, Lorrimer etc etc. they also were hard men of their time lol, and took no prisoners ha ha. It was a mans game back then as you know. it is indeniable they were all top players first and foremost though, and were very successfull at a top/massive club. as hard as that maybe for you to accept. WE ARE LEEDS WE ARE LEEDS

  15. Spooky how close the dates of the two games are guys. Mind you, there's not a hope in hell of a Leeds player making the England squad is there, even though Woy is scwapping the bottom of the bawwel with evewy squad he names. You have all missed the obvious come back. The great Bobby Moore was guilty of a howler in the first game in Poland which we lost 2-0. One of the worst days of my, up to then, young life.

  20. As neither a West Ham fan or Leeds fan, I must say you seem to have a very big problem with Leeds. I think you may need counselling to help you over it. I mean no one but the Leeds fans like Leeds, its a given in football. But your obsession gives the impression you hate dirty Leeds more than you love Wet Spam but surely that can't be true.

  23. are you bitter cos if you talk about west ham you get no comments. its like a leeds fan talking about a league 1 team all day every day! if i supported west ham i wud be embaressed to follow the same team as you. UR ONLY HERE TO TALK TO LEEDS!!!

  24. Plenty of Leeds players have played for Engand over the years and most recently Tom Lees has featured in qualifiers at U21 level and in time, he could well progress to the senior squad.

By the way, your story definitely smacks of boredom. Sounds like you're the one scwaping the bottom of the bawel.
