Newcastle 0 West Ham 1 - 18 Points Banked!

Well it wasn't pretty. It wasn't very skilful either. There was very little Academy about it. The passing was generally poor. The crossing was generally dire. The football rarely flowed. Brooking might have winced. Peters too. Hurst would have wondered why Carroll was on the pitch. But Moore would have smiled at the performances of Tomkins and Reid. Nothing fancy, but quietly efficient for the most part, the pair of them. And considering their ages, that has to bode well for the future.

Diame was a tank in midfield but lost the ball far too often. Noble ran the show in so far as anybody in a West Ham shirt ran the show, but the show barely passed curtain up using that analogy. Jarvis wasn't involved before he was substituted. Benayoun was poor, Maiga was even worse, and Carroll was, for the most part, truly dire. But Allardyce? He was brilliant. To steal three points through organisational discipline is his trade mark and he did his job fabulously.

What is there to report on the game? The goal was lucky but classically Nolan. O'Brien's shot was going well wide but Nolan, an inch onside and on the edge of the six yard box unmarked, diverted it home. That is why this guy should have been Player of the Season two years ago when Parker got the award, and it is why he should be in England's squad for the game against Sweden. He combined with Carroll second half and the pony tailed plonker forced an excellent save from Krul. And our only other serious threat on goal came when Nolan engineered a yard of space on the edge of the box, collected Diame's excellent pass, and fired a yard wide.

Newcastle were poor, very poor, and seemed to be leggy after the game in Belgium. Apart from a header that Jussi clawed away brilliantly, they offered next to nothing. But maybe we were just too well organised for them. O'Brien and McCartney both played well defensively and Demel, a foul throw apart, was ok after coming on.

The performance was workmanlike in the extreme. But who cares? We collected a magnificent three points, a huge bonus given our record at St James' Park. That's 18 points in the bank from just 11 games! We are SIXTH in the Premiership! West Ham, in sixth place! Above Arsenal. Above Spurs. Above Liverpool. Above Newcastle.

Were you watching Alan Pardew? Were you watching Demba Ba? For the most part, Andy Carroll was!

Player Ratings: Jussi 8: O'Brien 7, Tomkins 7, Reid 8, McCartney 6; Noble 7, Diame 7;  Jarvis 4, Benayoun 4; Nolan 7, Carroll 4 Subs: Maiga 5, O'Neil 6, Demel 6

  2. No. I'm noot talking about the club award plonker. His goals kept Newcastle up. And at this rate, they will keep us up too. Parker's efforts saw us finish bottom.

  3. Again no goals when Tomkins / Reid combinations is back there. Hopefully Collins stays injured.

  4. It was heroic, it was energetic, it was clinical, it was everything we have been missing for years. Only man u and Chelsea have won on there patch recently. No team turn up at St James's park and play them off the park. It was never going to be free-flowing football, it was another professional peformance from the team again. Once we are mathematically safe and the pressure is off, expect the shackles to come off and see entertaining football, considering the talent we have at this club. Until then, I'm happy for us to keep picking up points and suprising most teams. Bring on spurs!!!

  9. It's a clear illustration of how bad the premier league is when the hoofballs are 6th. I genuinely hope now that they qualify for Europe, just to give us all a laugh.

  11. "Pony tailed plonked"? I might be wrong but a quick glance at the games I think he has featured in shows us winning 13 points (in 6 games) against 5 points (in 5 games) without. Maybe a little more time studying the team you allegedly support rather than your boring Leeds fixation might throw up some interesting discussion.

  14. Fair enough 21:15, winning leagues is ok I suppose. But when your team has won a World Cup, well it puts insignificent league championships in perspective, don't you think? As for slating Sir Bobby, - I just say Norman Hunter England v Poland 1973 Wembley, air-kick leading to Poland's goal and elimination for the '74 World Cup. Yep, thank you Leeds we were never so deserving .

  15. I feel sorry for 'Leeds' fans. It can't be very nice living in such a dump, especially with all the muck up there. Lets face it, when they did win the old 1st division, they did in a way that set back English football for decades, clogging and scrapping their way to the title. Easily the worst example of backward theory in football in the postwar period. And when they post on here, they reveal themselves as backward, prejudiced lowlifes with a double portion of chips on each shopulder. Yorkie chumps - jusat look at types like savile, Boycott, Parkinson, warnock and all the other 'ey-oop' types. Phuck orf to Ilkley Moor, chumps.

  16. Ouch Traveling. To be fair, when Carroll doesn't play, Cole does. You don't have to be a Derby winner to outperform a donkey!

  19. Please inform me when WHU

    a) Won the top division?
    c) Qualified for the champions league?
    d) qualified for the European cup?

    Leeds,
    a) 3 times, last in 1992
    b) many times , including semi final
knocking our Barcelona in the process
    c) 3 times, including a final in 75, beating Barcelona with Cryff in the semis

  20. I would never seek to deny the glories of Leeds' past Phil and I was cheering your lot on in the European Cup final and in the European Cup semifinal, and indeed in the Fairs Cup finals. I hated Leeds, but as a British club I supported you in Europe.

The trouble is, we are talking the past. How many fans showed up on Saturday? 19,000. That is shameful. Use all the excuses about Bates that you want, but you have to question the status of Leeds as a big club - and question the passion of the fans - when only 19,000 get their arses into the ground whilst Leeds still have a shout of winning promotion. IF I was on the board of GFH, I would be doing new sums before closing the deal to buy the club. One of the top ten supported clubs in the country? With 19,000 attending, are you even one of the top ten supported clubs in the Championship?
