Why is Princess Brady desperate to justify money spent on Jarvis?

(With thanks to Stani)

There's no doubt that Gold, Sullivan and Brady have done a lot of tidying up regards the financial side of our club in order to stabilise us, so they should be given credit for that. But let's not ignore the fact that it was first and foremost in their own interest that they did so.

With that positive acknowledged, what concerns me with them is their tendency to make huge errors in judgment. Avram Grant is an obvious one. Another in my opinion - with the assistance of the manager - was the purchase of Matt Jarvis for potentially £11 million pounds. If you think the owners are feeling that they made a mistake there, then you're mistaken. Even as recently as 6th April, in her column in the Sun, Brady was trying to justify it:

"TWO goals from Andy Carroll and three points closer to the shoreline. By any reckoning, our man Sam was right to insist that we bought winger Matt Jarvis from Wolves last summer. Stats shown to me today reveal Jarvis as the Premier League’s leading open-play crosser of the ball with easily the most successful attempts at 42 from 171.

Analysts suggest this is because Sam Allardyce prefers traditional wingers aiming the ball for big strikers. Perhaps, but that’s a gross under-estimation of Jarvis, who can be quietly devastating.

It worked today as Andy scored twice but we have to be without our loan player at Liverpool this Sunday and someone else will have the pleasure of meeting Jarvis’ crosses."

Firstly, you would have to ask why someone has felt the need to show her stats on a player. Have there been questions raised about the purchase of this player behind the scenes? Is someone trying to justify the purchase with stats?

Secondly, anyone that puts the stats to one side and watches the actual football will see what Jarvis produces. Yes they are crosses but they are 9 times out of 10 lacking in any pace, direction or quality. Jarvis' sole aim it seems is to get to the byline and get the ball in by any means, seemingly unconcerned about it's effectiveness as long as it counts as a cross.

Lastly, Brady's words suggest that Jarvis and his crosses somehow played a part in Carroll's two goals when neither of Carroll's goals in fact came from Jarvis' crosses.

Regards Allardyce's comments on not being able to afford Carroll because of the financial rules...I think this is a deliberate attempt by the club to bring down the price of the player. Now consider the fact that had we not wasted £11 million on Jarvis, we would have been in a far better position to buy a more effective player in Carroll. On the evidence of what Jarvis has provided so far, I dont think he'd have been missed if he wasn't brought in.

I would like to make clear that I don't really want to castigate the player...I'm merely arguing that he is not worth £11 million. That is an international class price tag and Jarvis I'm afraid is not international class.

Going forward, it is their propensity to make such errors in judgment that concerns me about our owners.

  1. I hate all the spiel currently coming from West Ham at the moment, it's like they treat us all like mugs...
Did you read the Q & A part 2 about the stadium? How many times did they mention Category 4 - the highest grade stadium? ".....transformed UEFA Category 4 stadium" & "the world-class UEFA category 4 (the highest category of football stadium)"...... I feel like I'm being talked down to and it all sounds like political speak to me (maybe Brady thinks she's air to maggie's delusional throne?) "The new stadium also enables a 'Club Level offer' for supporters and their families who still wish to enjoy a more traditional matchday experience but require access to a lounge, hot food and drinks." - why don't they just call them the cheap seats? the budget seats?

  4. West Ham management take us for mugs! They instigate the fair plays rules, then say it'll stop them being a big club or even for once buying a decent striker... And yet talk about top four... Then on the stadium Q and A pt 2, they shoe horn in as many times as possible.. "UEFA Cat 4 Stadium (world class stadium etc).....

  5. Absolutely right mate. He is 0 assists despite crossing the ball more than anyone in the league. You can blame the strikers all you want but Vaz has played less games and hates crossing the ball and he still has 4 assists. No way in a million years is Jarvis worth 11 million, Brady is just desperate to praise Sam before his new contract is signed, sealed and delivered.

  8. Hotshot: it's been that way with them from day one. They're even pally with some media outlets so that they can get their propaganda out. I also remember the club emails I had signed up for which were cringe worthily full of propaganda and crass advertising. Then there's the joke of the official site which I have just completely stopped visiting. But why are we surprised? In the takeover press conference when they bought us, Sullivan actually referred to us fans as 'customers'. That said everything for me.

20:50: it's all in front of us. I don't think I made an unfair or unreasonable conclusion. Only thinking is required, not over-thinking.

Hugh: I think there may have been ongoing discussions behind the scenes and an evaluation of the manager before any offer of any contract. After accepting that Allardyce had achieved the targets of promotion and then keeping us in the Prem, maybe someone on the board then questioned his purchases and particularly the one of Jarvis.

What really gets me is the manager actually went back to Wolves with improved offers time and again for Jarvis. What the hell was he thinking? What did he see in him? At one point the deal looked to fall through and I distinctly remember being happy that we just avoided getting mugged off, but then they went in for him again. Wolves must have been laughing all the way to the bank.

  10. I'm not too bothered by the transfer fee,all I know is that when I watch JARVIS play he worries the life out of opposition defenders, because of his pace and ability to pass players,a valuable player to the side.

  11. Unfortunate timing Stani, Jarvis looked pretty good when setting up our goal!

  12. Oh come on HF, the cross was a pie! It was all Carroll. A lot of people will get excited over it but one swallow doesn't make a summer. I'll be happy for him to prove me wrong, of course.

  13. He did do well yesterday.... I for one was glad the ball fell to Jarvis when on the rebound from lashing effort from ManUre. He turned a kitchen sink moment into a West Ham corner in about 8 seconds. If Carroll is worth 15-17 million, Jarvis is worth a Thatcher Funeral. His pace alone sets him aside. It's all relative, the market is high because there's just not that much about. Look at Paul Ince's comments about his son's value....
