Why were Diarra and Vaz Te brought on rather than Morrison?

Ok, I don't want to gripe after an excellent opening day win - albeit we were playing Cardiff, not Man City - but the decision to overlook Morrison completely was somewhat irritating.

The kid has had a truly brilliant pre season and it would have been exciting to see him given a run out, even if only used as a sub. Fair enough to bring on Downing, the fans were anxious to see him on the pitch too, but why waste time with Vaz Te when everybody already knows what he can and can't do?

Just imagine the joy had Ravel come on and scored! Barkley started and shone for Everton at Norwich, showing the benefit of giving a kid his head. And a toothless Cardiff were the perfect opposition to give Morrison his Premiership bow.

Let's hope Allardyce doesn't provoke the wrong sort of Ravel reaction by constantly overlooking him. The boy has ability and deserves a chance sooner rather than later.

  1. Allardyce is just winding him up. Disgrace

Regarding our performance...lots to improve. It's concerning we went in with no new faces. If Allardyce carries on this way, does last year's team have what it takes to do as good or better this year? I doubt it. Cardiff were very poor. We should not get too happy just yet.

Barkely looks exceptional. Immense power in those legs for a 19 year old man (noticeable his acceleration and ability to change direction), and good with both feet. This guy will be big

  2. I read one theory that Vaz Te was given a run out as a thank you before being shipped out. Also, there is added pressure on opening day. Any error is magnified I think. Like Winston Reid against Villa three years ago. Maybe Sam thought best to wait.

I wanted to see Ravel as well. But if his head is on straight now, it won't matter that he didn't come on. I think.

  3. Fair point; but as Big Sam said after the match, think of Collison who didn't even make the squad!
Maybe BS wanted to play Vaz Te to give Nottingham Forrest another look at him? But ultimately, yeah, I'd have liked to see Ravel. Maybe at Newcastle?

  4. No one close to me in the BMU could understand that decision either. Easy game to make debut given him confidence

You'd have thought ...but I don't think he will remain over-looked. In his post match conference Sam spoke about sympathy for Collinson and Taylor not making even the bench and spoke about the fierce competition for places. So in that sense being on the bench was positive for Ravel. He also said Carroll wasn't training which was ,quote, a worry and he had no money to spend on a striker so there would be no more arrivals.

  6. FFS mate, WE WON THE GAME

It's so easy to just assume that Morrison is as good as all you armchair pundits think.

I for one will always accept that Sam knows best, certainly a lot more than you ever will.

  7. I would have thought it was obvious.

We need to sell before we can buy.

Diarra and Vaz te are obvious candidates along with Taylor, so by giving them some game time they stay in the shop window.

  8. According to Karen Brady ravel Morrison went AWOL for 3 days and didn't turn up for training and that's why he wasn't used as a sub!

  10. season ticket holder over 20 years18 August 2013 at 16:47

Paul get your facts right before stating crap. Sit down in your arm chair and read article properly. Sorry but I think Morrison should start from bench hammersfan. Great decision to start cole who scored, noble who set up second and also noble who scored. Hmmmm diami was voted man of the match in most papers and also Jarvis set up the first. So where is the justice in Morrison starting ahead of them?? How come you not mention rat being over looked? is O'Brien a left back?????? Oh nevermind back to the armchair for you

    1. whats going on with maiga and bg's interest in the portugese striker? Then we hear bg is not spending anymore. Can we rely on carroll's fitness? we've got some great options now but the striker department looks suspect, still!

  15. I think I trust Sam's judgement as opposed to armchair spectators who collectively have managed 0 games in the Premier League. If he says Ravel sits on the bench, thats good enough for me.

  17. Morrison played well in certain pre-season games against inferior opposition and not in really competitive situation. Allardyce called it right, we won and kept a clean sheet. Look at the positives not the negatives. In Sam we trust!!!

Welcome back HF! Where did you disappear to?

No worries regarding Ravel- his time will come and he isn't the only good player finding it hard to break into this team. Very decent players like him, JOB and even Joe Cole aren't guaranteed places. That's a good thing- it shows how good the squad is.

And it's quite a first as I don't remember the last time we had so many good players that we couldn't accommodate. Not a bad problem to have at all.

And by the same token, it's great and healthy that the likes of Rat and Downing didn't just waltz into the first eleven. Why should they? The likes of JOB played exceptionally well last season and as Allardyce pointed out Downing has had less than half the time of pre-season football with the Scousers as our players have had on average.

It's all looking pretty good (contrary to one or two the panicy comments on here). We just need to shuffle the pack a bit now to make room for the cover for Carroll that I still think we need to bring in.

  19. Hi Anony-mouse, been on my travels - Dubai, Bulgaria and Italy - and not much was happening over the summer anyway. Being cautious, I'm not going to get too excited yet, but things are certainly looking a lot more promising than they did after that 4-0 thumping under Grant.
