Anybody else want Millwall to win?

I know we are supposed to hate Millwall, I know the history between the clubs, I know that there is a contemptible element amongst their fan base, I know Green Street The Movie has filled the heads of impressionable idiots with thoughts of urban warfare, but I, for one, will be cheering Millwall on in the playoff final against Scunthorpe.

Why? Well Millwall are a London club for starters. I always favour the London clubs in a head to head against our northern brethren. Then there is the relative status of the two clubs. Millwall are a Championship club, but Scunthorpe, bless them, belong in the old division three. In fact, ask nine out of ten fans where Scunthorpe is and they won't be able to tell you. Have they ever won anything? I doubt it. Ever got close to the top division? Probably not. OK that is a form of football snobbery I suppose but I am a traditionalist. I hate Leeds United but it feels wrong for them to be in the old Division Three. I was so pleased to see Leicester bounce back at the first attempt and I hate the idea of Southampton being down there next season.

For me, Millwall is Derek Possee and Harry Cripps, players I loved before anybody told me that I was supposed to hate them because they played for the hated Millwall. I like Danny Baker and would love to see Millwall win the playoff just for him. Millwall are also Sherringham and Cascerino for me and although I was old enough by then to feel the rivalry, I couldn't help but admire those two as a strike force.

So, I hope Millwall prevail and get back to where they belong, in the second tier of English football. I don't want them climbing any higher of course, the Premiership needs Millwall like Brown needs another bad headline, but let them taste a little bit of glory!

  6. You really haven't thought this through have you.
Not only are you wanting our deadly rivals to win, but they're playing against Scunthorpe.

Scunthorpe play in Claret and Blue, are nicknamed The Iron, have Rainham Steel blazed across their shirts and number ex-hammer Grant McCann in their squad.

Oh! and i'm a lifelong Hammers fan from Plaistow but living in Lincolnshire.

  7. I hope you get pushed under a train you idiot

  8. I was aware of the Claret & Blue. Lincolnshire? Is that where Scunthorpe is? 9 out of 10 football fans won't know where Lincolnshire is either!

  9. Hmmmm 2033, in rather bad taste don't you think? The death happened because of this sort of stupid hatred and because there are morons in the world who think that sort of comment is acceptable. Very sad.

Bleedin 'ell HF, i agree with you on the this one too.
I've got some Millwall mates - top geezers - so I have a very slight soft spot for the lion, and I know where you're coming from with the Derek Possee thing.
I also know, where Lincolnshire is (but not sure about Scunthorpe).

CLARET AND BLUE THROUGH AND THROUGH.

  13. I don't really care either way. As a West Ham fan born after 1980 I have rarely had any real experience of Millwall games. I can't see how they can be our 'greatest rivals' when we only play them once every ten years!? I hope Scunny go up - they play in claret and blue after all!

  24. I too have a slight preference for Millwall jdue to the London thing.

I also have this thing for underdogs. Also, I think their reputation nowadays is exaggerated and I feel a degree of empathy for them as we also get a constant negative press too and I know how much it grates.

Lastly, growing up as an indian in East London in the 70's I've been beaten up by West Ham fans far more often than by Millwall fans!

  25. Ignorance is not knowing parts of your own country really! tradition in football finished in th 90's! little old scunny punching above their weight is what the fa cup was all about and still is!!!the fact that this has transfered into league football surely is only a good thing! and to be honest is it was not for teams like scunny producing players and developing players like they have done in the past some of the bigger clubs would not be so big!! football is all about hierarchy but surely every neutral supporter should support the underdog!!!and a team like scunny need that support! we have averaged about 5500 supports all season and 10000 are going to wembley !!!where have millwalls 50000 fans been all season? and lutons 40000? if clubs had that support they would not be where they are...luton playing conference football next season!! scunthorpe till i die!UTI

    ReplyDelete
  26. oh and scunny bought a load of stadium blue seats from west ham....wheres the support now?ha ha

    ReplyDelete
  27. Full marks mate. I'm still cheering on Millwall but it's good to have a Scunthorpe perspective! Any Scunthorpe players ever gone on to play in the Prem or for England? Apart from Kevin Keegan of course!

    ReplyDelete
  28. LOL Very good call Apache! I've played football with Botham as it happens.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Was he any good as a footballer and any stories to tell? Didn't Shilton turn up for Scunny once too?

    ReplyDelete
  30. He was 15 or 16 at the time and was just back from a trial with Bourenemouth. We were playing over Yeovil Rec, using a couple of trees as goalposts as you did when the proper posts weren't up. He was ok, but no better than me! Also delivered his Christmas cards when he was touring Oz. I was working as a postie - student job. Also played kiss chase with his younger sister when at Junior School. The Bothams used to live in Coombe Street Lane, Yeovil, opposite the Rec. All pretty uninteresting I know but if I had anything tasty I would have sold it to The News of the World!

    ReplyDelete
  31. You may have sold the stories, but as you're so much older than me, I wouldn't know them!

  32. Word has it that your pikey mates have sprayed the Bobby Moore statue outside wembley with paint. Just low life scum. Come on the IRON keep them down.
