Widdowson, Sears, Who's Next?
So Joe Widdowson has been snapped up by the mighty Grimsby and Freddie Sears is going to be farmed out on loan. Two of our bright young things, it seems, are not destined to lighten up the firmament of the Premiership after all.
Roll back the clock to December and posters were claiming an exciting future with West Ham for both. When I posted about the need for a left back understudy for Ilunga, indignant Hammers pointed out that we had Widdowson in reserve, a player who had acquitted himself superbly, apparently, in a game where we leaked three goals against the Canadian "All Stars". The fact that he was on loan to a team in the bottom division didn't seem to register as significant. Did it not occur to anybody that if he was that promising, he would have found a berth in a Championship squad? Apparently not! Those Claret & Blue specs really do result in myopic vision!
As for Sears, well according to the Bruvs on the Mordant Org, this was the guy to displace that "useless great lump", Carlton Cole. Even when Cole was banging in a goal a game, his detractors still insisted that he wasn't good enough and that Sears was a much better option. Quite what that belief was based upon (apart from blind hope), I have no idea. Yes Sears had exploded onto the scene with that first goal but since then...?
In truth Freddie has looked as potent as Parrot Face Davies. Not only is the kid lightweight, he also lacks basic ball control under pressure. The ball gets away from him far too easily, hitting off him rather than clinging lovingly to him. True quality players, whatever their age, look comfortable with the ball at their feet but Freddie seems more comfortable with it two or three feet away from him. In the Premiership, defenders just say, "Merci" and take the ball away from you; as Sears has repeatedly discovered. In fact, even away to Watford he looked out of his depth. Zola is talking about a loan but my money is on him ending up as a Championship player at best sadly.
Two down, how many others will follow? If Hines was going to make it, he would have had a run by now surely. I mean, it's not as if there has been a lot of competition for places up front is it? The same applies to Kyel Reid. As with Sears, I think both are short of physical presence and lack the special skill needed by a small man to succeed in what is becoming an increasingly physical Premiership. Look at Sears in that game against Boro. Up against Huth and Wheater, he looked like a rabbit in a fighting ring with two Irish Wolf Hounds. And remember, Huth and Wheater are the 'linchpins' in a defence destined to be relegated. What chance of Sears even succeeding in the Fizzy Pop therefore?
Sadly, and more provocatively perhaps, I fear Stanislas may go the same way. Like Sears he arrived with a bang, but have you honestly been impressed in recent weeks? I'm afraid I haven't. He hasn't been helped, of course, by being played on the left when naturally righted footed. That decision, whilst playing the left footed Boa on the right, has looked perverse to me. I await an explanation from Zola of the thinking behind it. I certainly don't think it has helped the lad.
Collison and Tomkins look the real deal and two gems are not to be sniffed at. But West Ham fans are desperate for Academy boys to succeed and, as a result, are perhaps too easily hoodwinked by a penny pinching Board. The sale of Bellamy was swallowed because we had the exciting Sears ready to step in. The failure to strengthen the squad in January, apart from the speculative punt on Savio, was tolerated because we had an exciting crop of kids coming through. But were the fans sold a line? Have we been duped into accepting second best?
Hopefully you hammersfan will be next to go with your boring pointless blogs.
ReplyDeleteGood luck hulk hogan you can do it.
ReplyDeleteTell me, why do you keep coming back?
ReplyDeleteAre you seriously writing Stanislas off??? WTF are you on about he's done very well and is highly rated by everbody at the Boleyn. One goal and one assist so far.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely has the potential to become very good.
This site is the worst West Ham blog i have ever had the misfortune to read
ReplyDeleteIf you are not talking about Spurs (or even Arsenal today) you just talk crap
Sears is still a kid he has a very good goal ratio in his short career but is too lightweight & not ready for the premiership so the obvious thing is to send him out on loan to get some experience & some games under his belt
Didn't seem to do Rio & Defoe any harm did it ?
Seriously pal some of your articles on Spurs are cringeworthy & the rest are just drivel
More negative dross. "The sale of Bellamy was swallowed because we had the exciting Sears ready to step in." Er, no he wasn't. He was sold because he WANTED to leave and because £14m for a injury prone 29 year old was too good value. Also, Sears being sent out on loan doesn't mean he isn't considered a bright young star at all. How can him being loaned out be considered a negative thing? Personally, I've thought he needed a loan spell all along, but with lack of options up front we couldn't afford to send him out. Why don't you write something positive for a chance? instead of interpreting every going on as the end of the West Ham.
ReplyDeleteSears goal ratio is one goal in 8 starts, including games against Macclesfield and Watford, and 21 appearances as sub. Even Di Michele has a better ratio than that! Check the facts before you parade your ignorance 2324.
ReplyDeleteDefoe, for your information, scored 14 goals in his first 17 appearances (plus 21 as sub). Spot the difference?
2301, I'm not writing off Stanislas but I have reservations. I am convinced about Collison and Tomkins, less so about Junior.
Here we go again! More bollocks!
ReplyDeleteWho is ignorant i said Sears is not ready for the premiership & i was talking about his goal ratio before he broke into the first team squad
ReplyDeleteI am not saying he is going to make it in the Premiership but i am also not writing him off which you seem to do so easily after a handful of games...give the kid a chance ffs
Jack WIDDOWSON was a sixteen year old that I thought would never play league football,But his strong character and desire to learn has seen him improve immensely.
ReplyDeletehe could still surprise a few people if he continues to develope.
Freddie (scores for fun) SEARS, is a player who reminds me of Alan TAYLOR,He has pace to burn and an eye for goal, but he is limited by the type of service he requires, and doesnt get the required ball into space in front of him.
He is also a lad that is a confidence player,
I would like to see him loaned out to a Spannish or an Italian club to improve his technique whilst also allowing his confidence to be built up.
I agree with the potential truth that our Board are penny pinching.
Scott, I read the fans' views at the time. We were going to splash the £14m on replacements and we had Sears. We spent £5million of it and Sears isn't up to the job.
ReplyDelete2340, the game is littered with players who look good in youth and reserve team football but who then fail yo "train on". Both Cottee and Defoe scored goals for fun as soon as they broke into the team. Sears hasn't been able to deliver. He may yet cut it but I doubt it.
Alan Taylor was very ordinary. If Sears is the new Alan Taylor then he doesn't have much of a future ahead of him!
Fanno, I agree with you regarding Stanislas. He was only offered a ONE year contract when he came back from Southend, which I think demonstrates that Zola and Clarkey themselves are not sure.
ReplyDeleteI don't know about Sears. Since he burst onto the scene against Rovers and then hit the post at Everton, he's struggled. I think because his goalscoring record is so outstanding at youth ad reserve level, everybody at the club is desperate for him to succeed. We also have been hit hard in the striking department, another reason why he's still here.
Its a shame about Widdowson, would have liked to see him get a chance but maybe he instigated his move, you never know. Let's just hope we have a sell on clause!
Why are your blogs always so negative?
ReplyDeleteI have to say I normally think the abuse of this blog is harsh, but this time it seems to be fair. Have you even read Zola's comments regarding Sears all season? Particularly regarding loaning him out. Zola thinks he's good enough but needs games under his belt, He'll learn so much more playing reguarly against big ugly championship defenders every week than he will coming on off the bench, of those substitute appearences how many of those have been with 10 minutes or less? Quite a few methinks.
ReplyDeleteAs for Stanislas, far far too early to judge him, I doubt people thought Joe Cole would be a world class winger after his first half a dozen games. By all accounts the kid had 2 good games against chelsea when he was on loan at southend(?) and he looks like someone with pace and skill, give the guy a chance.
And for the argument they're not big enough physically, they're both still teenagers, they've not finished growing or developing yet, These guys are young and still learning, I think Cole & Carrick are perfect examples of why patience pays off, I can remember alot of people saying how much of a shame it was they weren't reaching that earlier potential but look at them now. Rant over.
1030, I hope you are right. It does seem to me that Zola's position on Sears has shifted however. I think recent games have shown him that, as much as he WANTS the boy to succeed, there is something lacking. Maybe he will find his feet out and loan and come on in leaps and bounds. The problem is, there is a HUGE gulf to be bridged from what I have seen. Enthusiasm is not enough in the Prem.
ReplyDeleteWith regard to Stanislas, I do not judge. I say, and I quote, "I fear Stanislas MAY go the same way." I also say that playing him on the wrong flank has not helped the lad. Of course I hope that he succeeds but I very much doubt that we would have seen him this season without all the injuries.
Sink or swim for Freddie next year. If he has a poor time then it will prove that he can't quite cut it. If he goes off somewhere and goes the biz like Defoe did at Bournemouth then he might springboard his career. West Ham must pick the right destination, style of football is important but so is the other playing personnel. He needs an experienced partner in a relativly pressure-free environment and most of all he needs games. Time will tell. As for Stanislas, I think its too early to tell, another one who needs time. I think its a shame he isn't being allowed to play wide-right where I think he will do damage. If he plays right on Saturday, I think he'll do well against Boro.
