Sullivan's Email
I am writing this on Wednesday morning. I had no sleep last night, having watched the shambolic performance by the team against Wolves.
I was as angry and upset as every supporter in the stadium at the disorganised way we played, allowing Wolves too much space so that they looked more like Manchester United. This was the culmination of five defeats in a row, including an appalling performance against Bolton.
We have a few very talented players in our team, but it is a very unbalanced squad. Individually we have some very good players, but this is not being converted into a good team performance. Nobody at the club should delude themselves that we are a good team. The table at this stage of the season does not lie.
However, with some of the outstanding players we have, we can and must do better as a team. I apologise to every supporter for the pathetic showing on Tuesday night but I fully expect a dramatic improvement today as we have so much individual talent.
I accept that the club is in deep relegation trouble. However, we are a long way from being relegated. With your help we can get out of this and regroup in the summer.
This is a difficult time. It has been a week to regret but Saturday’s result can change that. We need a win, we need you to support us, to forgive us the result against Wolves and to remember what this great club is about.
The history and tradition of West Ham United, the heritage and the prestige demands we are a Barclays Premier League club. But we have no right to that. We have to earn it. The Academy of Football? Now we have to show that. The manager knows, I know, the players know.
When I first started supporting West Ham, we had a tradition for playing the game ‘the right way’. I will settle for any way right now, as long as it is the winning way!
We all have our favourite players, our heroes. Older fans can remember players like Bobby Moore, Sir Geoff Hurst, Martin Peters – the cornerstone of England’s 1966 World Cup win. I know rival teams mock us West Ham fans for saying that, but one was the captain, another scored a hat-trick, the other scored the fourth. That sounds like a claret and blue contribution to me.
Younger supporters will probably look to strikers such as Frank McAvennie and Tony Cottee as well as Paolo Di Canio. They all brought something special to the club.
Then there was Sir Trevor Brooking, Billy Bonds, Alan Taylor, Bryan ‘Pop’ Robson, Phil Parkes, Alvin Martin and Ray Stewart. We didn’t win much but there was always a quality and a style. Another hero to watch: a midfield playmaker, a little wizard on the wing, a goalscorer.
Now we need this team to show their quality.
Now we need this team to show us their talent, their desire, their passion, their dare.
Now we need new heroes.
Saturday may be tense, on Saturday you will feel anxious and, at times, unsettled. I ask that we try not to transmit that on to the field, that we get behind the team and provide them with a platform. The rest is up to them.

It’s hard being an owner. I’m finding it’s harder being an owner who is a supporter. I hope for happier times soon.
Thank you for sharing the same vision and dreams.
Come on West Ham.
David Sullivan
Joint Chairman
(Cheers for sharing this Stani)
No worries.
ReplyDeleteWhat do people make of it? I think he spoke well....except for the bit where he couldn't resist flog some more tickets! :)
Just a few more home games, so let's get behind them at the ground guys. What have we got to gain by getting on their backs there?
This will be one of our most important summers ever.
COYI!
The funny thing is, is that if we were to win against Stoke, we would all probably be happy hammers again, likely to be in the PL for at least another season if Hull & Burnley lose respectively. The even funnier thing is that we wont win, sorry to bring the pessimism but let's be realistic. Pulis is a smarter tactician then McCarthy and will undoubtedly pull the same tricks. What frustrates me is that people talk about our attacking 'football', I ask you when? We haven't attacked well for 5 games, our forwards fail to close down opposition defenders in their own third, which every team does against us, we look weak in the tackle, as HF points out constantly there is little attaacking threat from our central midfield....ahem....midfield, and must i go back to the Hull game for a clear cut opportunity for Cole? Da Costa-centre back, no excuses, Stanislas-right mid, Cole & McCarthy on a date-they need to understand eachother better. Get it done! Delap will throw a ball in the box that will go in, that's a given, and so is relegation IMO. Bring in the builders, "Rescruture the whole thing boys!"
ReplyDeletei could rescruture that last sentence for you but it'd be expensive
ReplyDeleteI watched the match HF. I also would have been leaving singing "You are not fit to wear the shirt." Yeah, i hear what Mr.Sullivan says, but it's words & that has to translate onto the pitch. We went a goal down to a basic error & then became infected with the old 'here we go again'. No defence & can't put the ball away. What price Neill & Collins now? Upson thinks he's going to Sth.Africa, dream on buddy. We can still survive. I haven't lost hope, but if we lose against Stoke, i have a 16 year old squad out here that have some balls. They would be proud to wear the shirt. I will offer them to Mr. Sullivan against Everton if he is prepared to fly us out. They would certainly give it their best shot. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI also got this E-mail (to Dear John(!)and admit it did sound as though, like the rest of us, he was wearing his heart on his sleeve after Tuesday night.
ReplyDeleteBut maybe I'm just getting old and cynical because as I digested his comments I couldn't help thinking
Is it Passion or is it P.R.??

May i say something Hammersfan. I thought about what i said. I was angry. You are right. All the way along you have said we are going struggle come end of the year. I know, i read it. All the nice people say, don't be too harsh, don't get on their backs. Well i say stuff that. Sure, it could have been different. Sure, the first goal was an unfortunate error. Yes, we've been unlucky, blah blah blah. We need to give Stoke the flogging they deserve. How are we going to do that? Well fellas, it's up to you on the park. The only way you come off without 3 points, is if you are dead. Eleven deceased players come off the field. Upson, if ever there was a time, we need him now. We need Parker, Upson & Green screaming with the contorted faces of a psychopathic madman. If the fans see the commitment, they will support. My grandpa would be turning in his grave. The fact of the matter is, as nice as we want to be, we need to win. Only the players can do that. Personal motivation. Make it happen. If the players want sympathy, look in dictionary, it's between s**t & syphillis. Rebound on Stoke with some commitment & the fans will rebound with you. It's down to the players. Fooballers or not? Winners or losers? We shall see HF.
ReplyDeleteWell said Winston.
ReplyDeleteAre you Smithy in disguise??
I'm sure I could hear the strains of Rule Brittania as I read your mail

ReplyDelete"Very interesting to see supposed West Ham fans delighting in our defeat because I wasted money on the mini season ticket. What great Hammers you are!"
I wish I had thought of shoving that one down your throat you smug bastard – BRILLIANT!!!! Whoever it was… well done that man!!!
It's got nothing to do with West Ham losing YOU CLOWN!!! it's all about YOU LOSING… because you are a cnut of the highest order!!! What you looking for now sympathy!!?? You purposely isolated yourself from true West Ham supporters… (we were not good enough for you and your brand of support) with you taking delight in slagging us and our club perpetually!!! Mugs you called us among other things wasn’t it???!!! What MUG has wasted his money ha ha ha ha !!!!!?? You used your superior intellect to put us down, the places we live and were brought up (spare me the birth rite shite and that you’re family to Alf Garnet and Tony Gale’s cat and the whole Jewish and black races of the world that you defend single-handedly astride your white charger ha ha ha, spare me your drivel) You purposely set yourself up for it!!! You purposely set yourself apart!!! You put yourself on a self-made pedestal and pontificated down to us and now you try to lay a guilt trip on us because you wasted your money??!!! Fcuking good job!!! Cnut of the highest order you deserve everything you get and more!!!!! We were not good enough for you and now you want our support??!!
You’ve now got to drag your sorry arses all the way from Guildford or Bracknell, or wherever your lies want us to believe you now live, AGAIN… strapped to that “Fantastic Value For Money” mini season ticket you soooo delighted in telling us you had and rubbing it in ha ha ha !!! What goes around comes around…... SERVES YOU FCUKIN RIGHT!!!!!! This time I hope you lose the camera you took those sad pictures of the programme and inside the Boleyn (what a sad creature you are, who does that just to prove he was at a game, get a life and some human people in it) and your wallet so that you can’t by another programme to lose ha ha ha ha !!!!!!!! MADE MY DAY IT'S ABOUT YOU LOSING You'l never know how many people you've cheered up ha ha ha ha
Smug, so you 'true' fans would happily get relegated to see some blogger you dont like waste his money? some blogger that you dont like but continuously come back to read his blogs!
ReplyDeleteAre these the same 'true' supporters who clearly dont care about results the same ones that were on the pitch at the Milwall game? I think you will find that 99% of Hammers look down on that type of support mate!
Seems a genuine and heartfelt enough response to our dire situation. I can even forgive him the plug to buy tickets.
ReplyDeleteWinston, I absolutely appreciate your sentiments about the responsibility of the players to lift the fans but I don't think we should see this in chicken and egg terms. The fans responsibility is to get behind the team from the off... and the players, well, they're professionals and should know their own business. If they can't show the grit and skill to win this one, I don't think they should be given a single reason to reproach the fans.
Currently we're not a great team but on paper we look like a decent team and certainly shouldn't be in the mess we are. The quality is there to beat Stoke comfortably. The joker in the pack her is Zola. I've had reservations about him all season but I regret that the game doesn't allow managers time to improve, to develop the knowledge and skills, to mature into a job, before they face the chop. So I've probably been more forgiving than HF. At this stage of the season, and the state we're in, I'm beginning to appreciate HF's analysis more and more. Some on here have accused him of being negative. Actually it looks now more like realism. But Zola will still be in place as manager for Stoke. God please let him get it right this week.
Chunky what's a matter with you can't you read, it aint rocket science?
ReplyDeleteIt has nothing whatsoever to do with West Ham NOTHING TO DO WITH WHUFC, got that ok? It's about a smug arsehole getting a spoonful of his own medicine. Visit his blog for the joy of administering it. "the same ones that were on the pitch at the Milwall game?" Wots that got to do with anything? Were you one of the pot bellied pigs that ran on then? Otherwise I can't see how that is relevant. True supporters Support they don't take joy in continually slagging the side nor do they ridicule supporters who are less fortunate. Have you got that now mate? All quite clear is it?
"True supporters Support they don't take joy in continually slagging the side nor do they ridicule supporters who are less fortunate. Have you got that now mate? All quite clear is it?"
ReplyDeleteSo you are not a true supporter then given your delight in West Ham losing just so you can "ridicule" another fan of the club!
LOL The thing is, I enjoy the banter, YOU sir urgently need psychological help. How can you be so angry about this silly, pointless blog? What is it that gets so under your skin? Shouldn't you be focused on the things that matter - Zola's tactics and the players' performances - rather than get in a tizzy about what I write on here? Get a job, you might feel better then. And you might be able to afford a ticket to watch the club you profess to support!
Got a really good job mate and so well paid I have a season ticket, a proper one not a cheap skate's. Job’s so good I can wind you up as much as I like whilst at work ha ha ha. See below, thought you told the old Melbourne Hammer you were on your way to work? Going to come out with more bullshit to prove some more bullshit?
ReplyDelete“Zola's Not Fit To Pick The Team! Announcement Expected” Posted by Hammersfan at 07:09 24 March
Not rocket science nothing to do with West Ham love winding you up soooooo much. How much are the fares from Bracknell these days? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
Pepper, i find it pretty hard to take ANY positives from Tuesdays game and wouldnt be laughing at another Hammer because we are one step closer to the drop for any reason. It just doesnt make sense to me. And yeah, i can understand how it may have gone over your head but the twats on the pitch were not there for the result, they were just taking an opportunity to abuse people they dont like. Get the relevence now? Quite clear is it mate?!
ReplyDeleteI like the banter on this site. A lot of people dont agree with HF but you cant deny some of these articles are eye opening and though his wording could be more positive at times, he has been right about a lot that has been said.
Yeah got it now!!!!
ReplyDeleteJust a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down ha ha ha ha Just a little gallows humor mate, if you cant laugh......
Why not find a picture of Peppa pig and put a Hitler mustache on him and a peaked cap on him that would be soooooo funny!!!!! Or have a go at Westham66!!! A pop at the people in Dagenham or those that carnt sphel all that wel that would be good too
Love the banter too mate but best of all watching you wince as you swallow the medicine ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
Why is it that everyone who doesnt slag HF off must be him? im not him, and im no more fortunate than you since i was raised in Ilford and still live in Essex. I just dont see how Tuesday can be funny for any reason at all to any 'supporter'
ReplyDeleteTony Fernandes on his twitter page:
ReplyDelete"Don't understand the new owners of West Ham. Saw a letter they sent the fans. They should stay out and let the manager manage."
Doesn't look like he'll be investing whilst G&S are there.
Why Harriet? I'm intrigued.
