Aston Villa 3 West Ham 0 - Humiliating Stuff!

Well as big days go, it couldn't have been much worse. I suppose you could be waiting at the top of the aisle and a message arrives, "Sorry the bride has run off with your mother, but cheer up, they've made you a video of them having passionate sex"!

Grant, as I predicted, went largely with Zola's stagnant pool and boy he must be regretting it! Kovac's move to Stoke was delayed so he could play in this game; he lasted 45 minutes! Boa showed us all that the performance against City last season was the exception rather than the rule; he lasted 45 minutes too and failed to spot Cole completely unmarked on the edge of the six yard box, choosing to shoot instead.

Noble carried on the way he played most of last season, in and out, but mostly out. Upson looked his usual bemused self; what am I doing here, was written all over his face as he looked around in a desperate search for another West Ham defender.

Faubert's rebirth, as the TGV right winger we were all promised when he arrived, was derailed by the utter incompetence of our back four; he was switched back to right back but only after missing a glorious opportunity to score in the second half and failing to get onto a Cole cross in the first.

Ilunga was there but he didn't do much. Cole was isolated first half and ordinary in the second.

Parker ran around a lot but was typified by one glorious run when he weaved past three Villa defenders, but then, head down, failed to spot and play a pass on the edge of the Villa box. If Tottenham want him, he will go. Why on earth would he stick around to play with this pile of shit?

And talking piles of shit, we come to Green and Tomkins.

Now I have Green in my fantasy football team - I know, after all I've said about the guy! You see, that's the euphoria of a new season for you! That or senility! He was bloody awful today. Yes he made one very good save, touching over a Young chipped shot but, that apart, he looked trapped in his World Cup nightmare. No, hang on, he looked trapped in his 2009/10 nightmare! His positioning was poor, his panic under crosses was palpable and his assist for the first Villa goal, bettered only in terms of incompetence by the failure of the linesman to flag an obviously offside Downing, was embarrassing. Why did he push a ball that was going for a goal kick back into play? Well because he has no idea where his goal is at the moment. I know it is a bloody great big thing with a net attached, and I know it is anchored to the ground, but Green seems to have no idea whatsoever of its whereabouts most of the time. And to prove the point, Green elected to push another cross behind for a corner that, prior to his intervention, was heading for a West Ham throw! Second half, he did his very, very best to score an own goal, and interestingly, on the floor, in the middle of the goal, a yard from the goal line, he did his best TO GET OUT OF THE WAY, rather than grab the ball. He was hopeless. He really is England's number 666!

But Tomkins was even worse! I won't repeat what I said at half time, if you want to know how he tried to give Villa the lead, repeating his error against Wolves with knobs on, read the half time report. Instead, I will try to describe the third Villa goal. Villa were awarded a free kick just past the half way line on the right hand side. To be fair to Tomkins, I have no idea where Reid was, he certainly wasn't where he should have been. But as Villa prepared to take the free kick, Tomkins was JOGGING back, not paying any attention to the game. The ball was slipped to Albrighton (who was sensational all game) and he turned Tomkins this was and then that, WALKED past him as Tomkins floundered, and played the ball back for Man City bound Milner to score. I had to rub my eyes to check that Messi wasn't guesting for Villa, so easily was Tomkins done! Mercifully Tomkins was withdrawn from the action, as he was against Wolves in his last appearance. If this boy is the future of England then God help us!

Which brings us to Winston Reid of the starting eleven, the first Avram man on show. Let's just say he looked like a New Zealand player shall we? Maybe you can make excuses because the rest of the team were so poor, but to commit a foul throw when we were in an attacking position - well that is too basic an error and points to a player who isn't yet ready for the Prem. I hope to God we can find a right back before the window closes.

Barerra came on and showed in flashes. Piquionne came on but I'm not sure anybody noticed. Diamanti came on, but only to spare Tomkins any further humiliation.

All that hope, all that expectation. In addition to scoring three, Villa also hit the woodwork four times and an unmarked Carew aimed one header at the corner flag. I lost count of the number of times we failed to mark Villa players at corners! I think it is time for Sullivan to send fans another email!

Player ratings: Green 3; Reid 4, Tomkins ZERO, Upson 5, Ilunga 5; Faubert 5, Noble 5, Parker 6, Kovac 4, Boa 4, Cole 5 Subs: Barerra 5, Piquionne 4, Diamante 5

  1. I am completely miffed as to why we are so awful. Zola could have been in the dugout the difference in play was so minimal. Vulnerability to the count attack was VERY evident and lack of composure aswell. Heartbreaking stuff today, truly. Watching Tottenham and then watching Villa, what is clear is that other teams have no need to send their full-back bombing forward at every opportunity, their attacking players are good enough on their own, so why do we? Why do we play out through defence if the end result will be an aimless punt? Seems as if our football depression will never end!

  13. That performance was disgusting. I've posted my views on my blog but I'm with you on Reid, He is seriously out of his depth and we have fallen for the old 'he played well in the world cup so he must be good' chestnut.
If we don't get another TWO new defenders with a decent keeper to give Green a rocket up his arse we are going to leak goals like last season AGAIN! Six defenders and all of them are shite!

  17. LOL I have no idea "Ameet". I was warned something like this was coming and goaded that I would look in on the site so one thing I'm not going to do is look in on the site. Hope it has a hit counter. We will see who gets the most hits! Sad or what?

  18. HF,
If you want a laugh, you have to take a look! You know you love picking out dumb mistakes, there's a whole load at that site!

As Apache touched upon, the best one is "Sign up for emails at the address on the panel on the left"...it's on the right! Unless they're speaking from inside the screen facing outwards! Then they really are in the game!

  19. I agree that the first half was abysmal.Easily as bad as anything last year.To be fair to Grant he did what was needed at half time and for 15 minutes we had bit of passion and intent. But from then on it was downhill all the way.
I hope and believe that Grant will learn from this and see what really needs to be done to produce a team that the amazing fans deserve. They certainly didn't deserve us yesterday.
And finally, did anyone else notice Cole disappearring down the tunnel like a rat down a pipe at the the end whilst most of the players at least acknowledged our fantastic and undeservd support

  20. It is only one game, but.........

Tomkins is awful, I've never liked what I have seen of him play.

The last goal, Reid was pushed up front and Faubert was pushed up front on the right leaving a massive gap which was exploited.

I really don't think strikers have been the problem all this time, its definitely been the defence.

I was shocked last January when no proven quality defenders came in and to make this mistake this summer is unforgivable.

I guess Da Costa is injured, but he is much better than Tompkins.

Unless Tompkins suddenly develops over night, I'd be happy to see him shipped out to Southend where he can complete his career in the lower leagues where he belongs.

Green is Green, for every shocking positional play or block that leads to a goal by the opposition, he does pull out super saves that other goalkeepers just wouldn't get.

Green is ok, but it's the whole right of defence, the right back and right sided central defender that is a huge problem.

The whole team can only play well if the defence is there. Where is Curbs when you need him :-)

  21. Wow Stani mate, up early! I'm not going to give them the pleasure. It is soooooo pathetic, like a bunch of kids in a playground, which I suspect a lot of them are. Of course, there are a few very nasty adults in their ranks but they are worthy of utter contempt. To show how unbothered I am, I will even post their messages advertising the pathetic site!

  22. What I don't get is that Gabbidon was sat on the bench after haing been used in the pre season friendlies. Tomkins is our new Kevin Lock I'm afraid - over rated as a kid when first brought into the team. Except, I neer saw Lock play as badly as Tomkins played yesterday!

  23. HF, I don't usually favour your scathing criticism of West ham players, but your damning indictment of yesterday's performance, as a team and individuals, does carry an element of truth!
I watched the game live at home with three fellow Irons and simply saying we were gutted would be an understatement!

The team selection surprised all of us first off. Grant has promised change, better fortunes and everything geared to improvement and going forward?? But it all looked so same, same! Reid was the only difference!

Now, to be fair, I think Reid can be excused...I remember how fearful I was when I first attempted to swim in the DEEP end of the local pool! He will come on when the awe subsides and he gets his confidence. Sure, Tomkins looked lost and Upson nothing more than mediocre. Ilunga was average but ok. But we have DaCosta, Gabbidon and Ben Haim waiting in the wings. Where was Behrami? Where was Dyer?

Hitzlsperger, Behrami and Da Costa would have made a BIG difference to that team yesterday added to the fact that Barrera should have started! So ironic that Hitz got injured in his first game back for Germany and prior to his return to face Villa! You couldn't make it up!

It certainly looked pretty awful didn't it. Basic errors, lack of positioning and an absence of communication for all to see. But take away Downing's 'off-side' goal and add Faubert and Tomkins missed chances, as well as Boa's effort when he should have played in Cole on a plate and you have a different outcome. Hypothetical I know, and nothing is going to change the result but nobody here has actually dared to say how well Villa played!

Villa were awesome. We didn't play because they didn't allow us to. We made mistakes because they pressured us into them. They were slick, flowing and had width. Albrighton was excellent and the human double-wardrobe that is Carew led their line superbly!

Grant will have taken what he needed to know out of this. He will make the right changes for next week and we will see a massive inmprovement and Bolton will feel the backlash!

  24. 2150 hahahaha bang on the money mate - I didn't for a second think he could keep being positive for very long - but I didn't for a second imagine that it wouldn't even last for one game..... he's a priceless prick!

    ReplyDelete
  25. You are right Shaun, Villa were awesome from the off. I think they want McDonald to get the job permanently. How brilliant did Albrighton look?

Now I will write that sentence again. How brilliant did Albrighton look? Who? Had you heard of him before? Did you know Villa had the new Messi in their reserves? Is he really THAT good or does he just show how awful we were? Well, if the kid is English, I really, really, really hope he is a as special as he looked yesterday!

What amazed me was how Villa lacerated our midfield as well as our back four. We were supposed to have 5 players clogging up midfield but where were they when VVilla had the ball? It was wave after wave after wave of Villa attacks!

We saw in the World Cup how easy it is for determined teams to stop better teams from playing. But to do so, you have to close and chase and press and maintain a team shape. The only team pressing yesterday was Villa.

I'm not convinced by Reid as a right back personally. Yes Hitz will help but he is out for a month to six weeks. There's only one way of sorting this out in my opinion. Sell Parker to Tottenham and take Keane and Hutton is part exchange, with O'Hara on a season long loan!

    1201, priceless!

  28. Yeah HF, Marc Albrighton is English...born in Tamworth, and he's 20!
He was impressive, but I think the Messi comparison is a little hasty! We gave him space to stretch his legs yesterday and he took full advantage. I'm not taking anything away from him...deserved MOTM...but I reckon if he'd been closed down sooner and clattered a couple of times (Behrami?) he might not have fancied it!

Fact is, that happened all over the park. We stood off and watched Villa play it around.
Those three Spud also-rans you quoted wouldn't change anything! Keane's sell-by date has now expired...I've NEVER rated Hutton and would be apalled to see him in a claret and blue shirt quite frankly!...and Noble is BETTER than O'Hara! ALL THREE combined do not a Scotty Parker make!!

  29. The Behrami situation is interesting and a typical West Ham dilemma. According to Sullivan he doesn't want to play for us, which evidently contradicts what his agent says. We hear no clubs have put in an offer for him, and without him playing well in the premiership are not ever likely to do so. His absence from the latter pre-season friendlies was surprising. Is it a no play no pay situation?
If player's like Behrami and Diamante don't impress on the pitch who do they think of note will come after them.

  30. HF,
Actually I was up about half 3 :) have to eat before dawn then it's pretty difficult to sleep on a full belly.

Albrighton; and people talk about our youngsters! Man City, Everton, Villa have all produced better youngsters than us in the recent past.
