West Ham's Promotion Hangs On Thread Of Portsmouth's Survival

I'm sure there must be a rule preventing it, but if not, Sullivan and Gold should consider funneling some revenue down to Portsmouth to keep them afloat. With the administrator warning that, without a cash injection, Portsmouth may not be able to complete their fixtures, the situation is becoming very serious indeed - and the impact on ourselves would be catastrophic if all Pompey's results were expunged.

Should that happen, Southampton would lose 1 point, Reading none, Blackpool 1, Birmingham 3, Cardiff 4 and West Ham 6.

Reconstruct the table without those points and it gets scary indeed!

Southampton 32       61
Reading        32       57
West Ham    30       55
Blackpool     31       54
Middlesboro  31      52
Cardiff         30       49
Hull             30       48

How ironic that we may miss out on the Prem because 'Arry's and Storrie's spending bankrupted Portsmouth!

  1. dunno hf it is a bit scarey that revised table its obvious there trying to get some dough pumped in from someone as members of the football league then maybe the football league can sort them out
if they were unable to fulfill there fixtures i presume someone a bargain hunter might get them for shirt buttons i guess they would get relegated
but to what division ? surely not a division run by the football league if that is the case then surely they have far too much to lose as a future buyer might have to bring them up through non league football i cant see them being allowed to just fade away mid season
i hope not as portsmouth are a good club there supporters are also ok theyve just had the curse of the arry good luck pompey

Pompey apparently have enough to keep going until mid-April. I just hope they find another two weeks worth but it can't come from Gold and Sullivan as it's against league rules. Even if it didn't potentially affect us I'd still want them to survive- great fans and history.

Losing the points would have an enormous effect on us. One of the least quoted but most significant parts of Dale's Sullivan interview was the clear indication that this season is s*it or bust for us and that Allardyce has been given the resources this year but that will change if we don't go up this time.

Such are our debts that it could well be that Pompey's demise could lead to our own a little further down the line.

  3. While the situation is scaring the s$&t out of me as well, that revised table has us with two games in hand. Wont we still play them? If Pompeys resuts are removed from everybody we still all play 44 games instead of 46, right?

  4. I knew Ben Haim was trying to help us when he dived for that pen. Good man!

  5. The football league should make sure that Portsmouth completes its fixtures before it is wound up. It is totally unfair on the other teams. There should be some money available to cover the wages of the players and the coaching staff until the season is completed. If the table is adjusted as you point out it will be a complete mockery for English football.

  6. HF,is that a fact that we are really gonna lose our 6 points?! I am not really sure what the FA rules are exactly but it does look pretty bad for us if we lose those 6 points. Our promotion chances will be in jeopardy..Hopefully,some investors might just bring in some cash and relieve the tension over there.

  7. Those are the rules Shak if Pompey can't complete their fixtures. Mind you, even if they do stay afloat, our rivals look like picking up gimme points against them - points we had to compete for because Portsmouth were still alive and kicking when we met them home and away.

  8. I saw that as well, Mouse. But ithe parachute payments are the same for year 1 and 2 in the N. I could see them saying "no more transfers in like we did this year, so win with what you have or its done". But the fold up tent if we dont go up this year still isnt a sound financial move for them. The rewards in the EPL are too great.

USA Dave- Despite the dire financial situation the board have pushed the boat out this year. But the interview inferred we'd have to cut our cloth accordingly if we stay dow, I'm sure you're right and this means that we won't have much to spend, but I also think that it means we'd have to sell as well. We can see that it's a tough league to get out of- it will be even harder if we were to lose the likes of say Tomkins, Cole and Noble.

All the more reason to get behind Sam and the boys and hope Pompey can stay afloat.

Thanks for the English lesson HF- pretty rich coming from someone who used so many unnecessary capital letters in that last comment, but never mind.

Still not sure I comprehend the difference though- yes, I know- I'm stupid. So tell me- if I were to say that you are as much of a tool as anything that Black and Decker have ever produced would I be a) implying or b) inferring that you are a kn*b?

  13. From all of your posts on this blog i draw the correct and proper inference that you are indeed a moron with a Rathbandian like foresight into all things football and an obsession for hits only matched by Jonathan King

  14. Another negative article about WHU. Well done.

Yes, it would be bad news if Portsmouth were unable to continue, particularly for all their supporters. Hopefully a solution will be found.

Looking at your revised table I would still back WHU to finish in the top 2 places. They are two points behind Reading with 2 games in hand so all is not lost.

Would be worrying if we lost the six points even if we have 2 games in hand. In addition to that I feel kinda sorry for them since Pompey is a club with a rich history and pround supporters just like WHU.

  16. Neither, because Black and Decker do not make tools called knobs so that would actually be a non sequitur.

The difference is really very easy to understand. If I say something to you where the meaning is not explicit, then I am implying. If you then interpret my meaning, correctly or incorrectly, you are inferring.

An implication is something suggested; an inference is something gleaned. So, if I were to call you a "piece of door furniture" I might be implying that you are a knob. However, you might infer that I am calling you are a bellend. Either way...
