Green to QPR, Kenny To Leeds, Birmingham's Foster to West Brom

So Rob has managed to hold on to the pen long enough to sign that contract then. I remember when a truly great keeper moved in the opposite direction, but then Phil Parkes understood which of the two was the bigger club. Poor Rob Green, he thought Spurs or Newcastle or a club of that size might want him, perhaps even Chelsea as cover for Cech. But when it came to the crunch, even West Bromwich Albion considered Foster a better bet at £4m than Green on a free - and Clarke should know having worked closely with Green for two years! So Green's options were limited, extremely limited indeed. It boiled down, it seems, to QPR or er...QPR. Strange that, given he is supposed to be such a great keeper! Meanwhile, a two year deal is hardly a vote of supreme confidence. Green has at least three more years left in him surely?

As for Paddy Kenny, he joins a long tradition of mediocre keepers at Leeds. Even the great Revie team had Sprake in goal! Robinson was good, to be fair, and so was Martyn, but Day and Harvey were on a par with Kenny - nout to write home about!

As for Foster, he is OK but if Birmingham collect £4m for him, that represents good business. Of course, that still leaves Robinson in limbo. I'd welcome him to Upton Park but what would we then do with Henderson given we already have Jussi?

  2. If Harvey was so ordinary why was he voted best gaolkeeper in the World Cup of 1974>

  3. Your peerless ability to invite ridicule is matched only by your obvious need to seek attention.

Even allowing for the fact that this piece comes from the fan of a no-mark club which has, in its time, employed the likes of Allan McKnight, Perry Suckling and Roy Carroll, this latest episode of bubble-blowing really takes the biscuit for a total lack of knowledge and serious thought.

Is Alf Garnett writing this rubbish? I won't be visiting again.

  5. 1158 we also employed Day who I mention in the article. And Grotier and Ferguson and Calamity James and Green...I don't claim that we have a great track record do I you silly moo!

  6. I love to read your opinions on football and especially Leeds United. The weather has been crap and work is hard but nothing beats a cockney nobhead for cheering me up. You must be a complete f**king w**ker!!!

  7. Robinson? honestly have a look at his stats for last year. Worst shot to save ratio and worst distribution stats in the entire EPL.

Pass! I'd actually prefer Paddy Kenny possibly even less fat!

  16. A very strange move indeed by Green. But then, he strikes me a a slightly distanced chap full stop. He'll be suited to QPR as his shot stopping qualities will be utilised fully, but Rangers fans will be horrified at his complete inability to deal with crosses, which Prem teams will look to exploit fully.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Its always depressing when a star leaves to match his owns ambitions. I never thought QPR had a greater pull than West Ham but clearly they do.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I wouldn't say Green's options were limited between QPR or er.....QPR. It was limited between QPR or West Ham surely.

Lighten up 11:58 its only banter. Besides I'm actually a little disappointed by the lack of Leeds insults this time (I am a Leeds fan btw)!

  20. It's interesting to seek the views of football fans on various clubs. Man Utd, City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Rangers, Real Madrid, Barca, and of course Leeds United, all attract definite views. Some love 'em, some hate 'em, but they have a view on these clubs.

Ask the same fans about West Ham. Response: '...er...yeah, they're ok I suppose'.

Ask them about what West Ham have won, what they've achieved. Response: '...er...dunno really, don't know much about them'.

So congratulations West Ham fans everywhere! You have won a place in the hearts of the global football community as being that club that are 'ok I suppose', you must be very proud!

On the other hand a club like Leeds United will alwyas be commented upon, talked about, in England and far beyond, they are a football brand. We've done some great things and some goddamn stupid things...but we have DONE THINGS.

What West Ham have done is to make up the numbers to give clubs like Leeds United someone to play.

No shame in that, every sport needs it's journeymen and you fulfill that role with gusto and pride. Thank you for making that point far more eloquently than I ever could by your continued attention to Leeds United, I for one look forward to reading and commenting on more of what you have to say.

  21. Indeed David, and no shame in winning the World Cup either despite having a yard dog like Jack Charlton wearing the number 5 shirt!

Out of interest, how many FA Cups have Leeds won? And how many times did you win the European Cup Winners Cup?

But you are right, fans around the country hate Leeds because of the cynical nature of football you pioneered. What has Camron just said about tax avoidance? It isn't moral. Sums up the Revie team. And Revie himself? Abandoned England and tarted himself to the Arabs.

  22. Really cuz if u go around the world and ask whos more supported west ham or leeds most fans will say west ham. Leeds couldnt fill there stadium once last season with there highest attendance of the year coming against who... oh yes west ham with attendance of 33 thousand and i bet about 5 thousand of them fans were west ham fans. Leed = shit club that can't and doesnt attract new supporters and doesnt find any players to go and play for england anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Indeed, all fair points you make. In fact Charlton himself commented that he wasn't a good player, he stopped good players like his brother from playing, a job he did very well.

Leeds United were respected and feared as much as they were disliked, begrudgingly perhaps, but they were admired for their ability to play as much as for their ability to stop others playing. I know this to be true because I remember those days.

We never won what we ought to have won given our dominance, but that's just one of the many crosses us Leeds United fans carry.

Personally I think it's going a bit far to say that West Ham won the world cup, if they did that you would have thought they might have managed to win the League as well eh?

However, that's not the point, and well you know it. The point is that we, indeed pretty much any two football fans worldwide, can have a conversation about Leeds United for hours. What would two random fans discuss with regard to West Ham eh? Pretty short conversation I imagine.

West Ham agmes are 'just another game in the fixture list' for most fans, whereas Leeds United make people CARE, they create PASSION, they are LOVED and HATED in equal measure. All teams FEAR coming to Elland Road and RELISH beating Leeds United.

Would you not agree that these are the feelings that sport is all about? That's why you write so much about us, and thank you for doing so by the way, there's nothing like brand recognition.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Maybe Green just realises West Ham are a nothing club? Stop going on about Lufc and focus on your upcoming relegation battle.

  25. Spot on Fred, you had a great season. It's hardly suprising though that your attendances were so good given your promotion run, and hardly suprising that ours were the worst for a long time given the disatisfaction with our chairman.

Interesting to look at our attendances when we were in League One though. I imagine they were higher than yours were. I can't be arsed to look it up although I bet you will be scrambling instantly for Google to prove me wrong eh :)

Fact is we are at our lowest ebb attendance wise and you're at at your highest. Congrats on that but you know very well how miuch that'll change around soon enough.

As for fans world wide, well who knows, it's a pointless and unprovable argument I think. My point wasn't about supporters, it was about who creates the talking points. What are we doing right here and now on your nice West Ham blog site? Talking about Leeds United. That was my point.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Sullivan's just blabbered on skysports news:

"One of our players has gone somewhere today and I hear there's a £2million agency fee involved. Whether that's true, I don't know".

Obviously he's talking about Green Why would QPR pay that? Crazy

  29. No argument from me there Dave. I am amazed by the volume of response when I run a Leeds thread - it exceeds EVRY other club. It is a shame that so few seem capable of engaging in any form of debate, however. I have many memories of Leeds - mostly unhappy ones it is true - but I recognise that you are a great club and a wounded giant. I exect you to be back, sooner or later, which is why I have adopted Leeds as my Championship team for 201-13. I hope to develop some intelligent discussion points along the way whilst dealing with news from Leeds honestly and in a tongue in cheek way.

  30. Actually, I like this Leeds blog site, thanks for setting it up.

With regard to the points you made about the Revie team being cynical and dirty etc (Dirty Leeds eh, love it!), what a contrast with the O'Leary team eh? A fantastic advert for young players, many from the youth set up or signed for small fee's. The run we had towards winning the PL, and the two seasons in the UEFA Cup and Champs League semi finals was just fantastic to watch!

What were Barca and Real like when they came to Upton Park? Oh, sorry, did they ever come to Upton Park? I can't remember.

Anyway, back to that O'Leary team eh! Martyn signed for a million, Kelly and Hart through the youth set up, Radebe for £250K from Kaiser Chiefs, a couple of other cheap centre backs until we got Rio from a feeder club. Admittedly, he cost a few quid, although we made 12 mill on him, good job we did in the end!

Then in midfield we had Bowyer for just a million, Batty who was a Leeds boy of course, Kewell again through the youth team, and of course Smithy up front also through the youth team.

All in all although we are tagged as paying too much for our players actually the core of the team was built from the academy or for very little. And did we play attacking and exciting football? Did we ever!

The biggest compliment we were paid was when they used us as the footage for Dream Team, the footy soap of the day. A Dream Team it was, and such a different style to the Revie team.

I remember the game we went 19 games unbeaten at home against Forest(think it was 19, I'm no statto) and Bowyers goal against Barca (an overhit cross really, but you hammers fans know you'll take anything against Barca eh? You have played Barca haven't you?)

Ah, happy days eh! Who knows what we might have achieved had the money men not f****d it all up.

I tell you what though, very few of those players played as well again in their careers as they did for Leeds United, but then that's what playing for a club like Leeds does to a player, playing for a big club lifts their game, just ask Rio, or Lampard for example, they'll tell ya!

Lets's start a new thread, who was the best player of that team? Personally I'd have to say Kewell was my fav, although I don't like him now for obvious reasons, he was a great great player to watch.

    MOT! :)

  31. HF, that would be good, perhaps not stating that our manager has resigned would be a good start to intelligent debate :)

Apologies for my latest comments, I actually thought it was a Leeds blog site! Ooops! Ah well, if was a West Ham site there'd be little to say eh :)

I'd encourage my fellow Leeds fans not to be abusive in response to your comments, they play into your hands a little too much for my liking.

Has anyone looked up the all time Leeds V WH results list? I have just done so but my natural Leeds United engendered modesty doesn't permit me to comment :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. David, I know only too well the history of results between the clubs, that's one of the reasons why I detest Leeds! You don't loath your whipping boys do you, which is why Leeds fans should have a soft spot for West Ham!

I never said Warnock had resigned. I said he was resigned, resigned to not winning promotion. You, and others, misread the headline.

  33. Anon mate everyone has there bogey teams but lets just says this shall we i said last season not the last 10 years attendance and notice how each year it slips lower and lower showing how bad your support is getting

    ReplyDelete
  34. David, for me I'd actually have to say Bowyer who i believe at the turn of the century was the most consistent midfielder in the country. His performances in the champions league run in we're actually quite frightening, particularly given he had to attend away games by helicopter due to the court case. In fact I'd have to say he was the best player in the competition that year. It's a shame he was hated so much as his number of England caps doesn't serve him justice.

West Ham fan as well if memory serves. Played a couple of games for them as well I think when he went sh#t.

Hammersfan, your 3 FA cups clearly outweigh our 3 league titles so no real comeback from me there.

And Fred, you are a plonker!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Any more? When did they really produce players for England fred? Reaney got 6 caps; Cooper only collected 20; Madeley (24 caps) opted to go on holiday rather than go to the Mexico World Cup!; Clarke was always an understudy and collected just 19 caps and was a product of Walsall anyway; Jack Charlton only collected 35 caps; Hunter was understudy to Moore and collected just 28 caps, costing us a place in the World Cup finals in one by treading on the ball against Poland; so that lot put together haven't got many more caps than Moore between them!

And outside of them? Batty missed a penalty in a crucial shoot out. Bowyer was bought and only got a couple of caps anyway. Anyone I've forgotten?

Hardly compares with Moore, Hurst, Peters, Brooking, Martin, Cole, Lampard, Ferdinand, Johnson and Carrick does it? And that's before we list Lampard Senior, Devonshire and Cottee. Have I forgotten anybody? Probably!

  36. Look no further than "the chief" who was probably the only outfield player who would have got a look in the Revie side. On the subject of great teams what a side that was! If you had to name the 5 best sides ever to grace the top flight they'd surely be up there. It's quite insulting to think the scum tite winners in 2010/2011 matched that 29 game unbeaten run. There wasn't a player in that team good enough to clean the boots of Lorimer, Bremner, Giles et al.

I know the 92 school were also good but it's thanks to that Revie side that people like Hammersfan and Fred respect us so much. It's amazing that we've been so sh##e for the last 8 years and still command this kind of respect.
