Pearce Squad for Olympics is a Joke - Pull Tomkins Out Allardyce!

So Pearce couldn't find a place for Beckham but there's room for a whole bunch of no marks that I've never heard of and for Tomkins, who spent last season in the Championship. I know there are restrictions on over age players but that's not the point. This squad doesn't stand a cat in hell's chance of winning a medal, so why not pick Beckham as a reward for all he has done for the Olympic bid?

I was angry when it was first announced that Beckham had been left out, and I'm even angrier now I've seen the full squad. Allardyce should pull Tomkins out immediately. Why risk injury and lose him from pre season fixtures for the sake of a tournament that means nothing and that we can't win anyway? Reid was told to opt out of the New Zealand squad so what's cool for the Kiwi should be cool for the Kander surely?

And back to that squad, the overage players, Cleverly, Ramsay, Sturridge and Butland apart it is less the Who's Who of British football and more the Who? Who?

  1. If you don't recognise the names, you clearly don't follow the sport of football well enough to run a football blog.

  3. Check the history and you'll see that I called for us to try to get Bertrand on loan. But hey, it doesn't alter my overall point.

  5. Reid was told not to play for New Zealand because he already had an groin problem, so he wasn't played as it would of made his injury worse. West Ham didn't pull him out

  6. It will do Tomkins some good playing with the likes of Giggs, Bellamy etc

  7. You have missed the point regarding Tonks, it is the Olympics you fool! Who wouldn't want to play in the Olympics! Maybe one day you'll get the point.

  9. You're definitely right about Beckham, Fanno. The Olympics is not about the best, certainly not in football, anyway. It's about commercialism, ambassadorialshipnessicity, and promotion of a world-wide feel good factor. And the 100m sprint. So Beckham was the perfect choice and should have been chosen. But the clowns who run the show don't know what they are doing.

  10. Think you've gotta respect Stuart Pearce's decision, personally I'm a fan of David Beckham and yes he's done a lot behind the Olympics 2012 bid and added great publicity on a world wide level, but Pearce is trying to pick a squad, the best squad he can to win a gold medal don't forget that. Whilst I feel a tad sorry that Becks hasn't got a place in the 18, I don't think the involvement will have done him any damage with all the other endorsements and royalties he gets so don't feel too sorry for him.

Respect to Pearce for making squad selection on true footballing reasons, let's get behind the team. Sometimes big names have to be dropped, if he'd played in the Prem like giggs for the last few seasons then maybe he would have got in, I don't think playing the MLS level of 'soccer' helps his cause, but that's his career decision.

So whilst I like Becks, I think it's fair enough, remember the passion Pearce showed for England and tell me he hasn't made the right decision for performance of the Olympic GB team!

  11. I think more Hammers players should have been selected, Nolan selected as one of the over 23 aged players for example would have been a great addition and possible captain.
