Liverpool and Man City Waste Money On England Defenders

How much did Unreal City and Liverpool pay for Kryten Lescott and Glen Johnson? What an absurd waste of money! Every time I see either in an England shirt, I find myself wincing. Saturday's game again showed their defensive frailties and both are a potential Achilles heel in our World Cup bid.

Who else is there out there for either position? Wes Brown, like both Johnson and Lescott, worries me because of his inconsistency whilst Gary Neville is surely now past it. Is there anybody else? I'm struggling to come up with alternatives! Except, of course, for Micah Richards who, for some reason, Capello doesn't seem to fancy. Personally, I believe Johnson should be operating on the right side of our midfield with Richards behind him; but I may be wrong.

Suggestions or opinions anybody?

actually I really rate Glen Johnson always have ever since he was on loan at Millwall and on his return. I saw him as really upset that West Ham sold him but then starting believing the hype and got spoiled by the plastics. I reckon he'll be a star at 2010 Lescott on the other hand has got to be well down the pecking order and I still think that Ferdinand and Upson will be the best pairing at the world cup My first choice would be Green A Cole(and that hurts) Johnson Ferdinand Upson Gerrard Barry Lampard (that hurt more) C Cole Defoe Rooney Carlton because I think he could link with Defoe well
But then what do I know I'll be supporting Bafana Bafana

I bet this isn't the first comment you've got that's like this, but I'll be nice I promise.

Johnson has been excellent in his four games for Liverpool so far, man of the match in at least three, with two goals.

The fact that he was apparently (didn't watch it) not very good for England in a meaningless friendly has no effect on whether Liverpool wasted money on him or not. And if anything only makes Liverpool fans like him more!

As for a reason why he's been better for Liverpool than England then I don't know, maybe it's got something to do with a partnership with Dirk Kuyt down the right hand side. Don't know who played there for England on Saturday but I'm guessing that they didn't give him much defensive cover.

I agree with Johnson on right midfield, but I believe Richards is caught out of position even worse that Johnson. Then again all full-backs who like to go forward are often found out of position, so unless we make sure they don't go forward often, such as Gary Neville, I envisage the problem with whoever is picked.

The players play well enough for their clubs to justify their price (well, Lescott still has to prove). But the English football team, it's overrated, hyped by the media, and is not going to win any silverware, not because it's not talented, but because the players have massive egos, don't work as a team, and are too pretentious. If the players can get over themselves, the team has a chance, otherwise, it doesn't matter who is coaching them. They will go nowhere.

I agree that johnson is a bit weak defensively and i think micah should get a chance. There is better players than lescott in his position but i still think he is solid and won't be an achilles heel if he does get in the first team.
team for croatia -
green
johnson terry lescott cole
swp gerrard barry young
defoe crouch

I think I agree with you about Lescott. He does great in set-pieces to score headers and what not, but I don't think he's incredibly solid. Glen Johnson is a good wing back because he's attacking minded, but he doesn't seem to impress defensively in internationals...yes, like you, I"m surprised that Micah Richards isn't getting his chances, and I think Wes Brown isn't great. I mean we got a good set of center halves with Terry, Rio, and Upson (Richards plays in that position as well so he makes a good backup)..I guess Richards should be picked in rightback before Johnson until Johnson does better I suppose..Johnson will probably set up more attacking chances, but Richards will defend better, and that's a priority. I feel like Lescott and Johnson would have done better last year than this year...maybe they've slacked off after joining Man $ity and Liverpool respectively..I don't know..but they certainly aren't doing well enough for England..so yeah, Richards is the right option for right back for the time being. -MEH

Nobody picking Joe Cole I see

Let's wait until he is fit again eh? May well return to left of midfield.

I think the playing styles of both Ashley Cole and Glen Johnson is more conducive to them playing as wing backs. With that in mind I think Capello should at least try a 3 5 2 in one of our up coming friendlys...

Green

Ferdinand Terry Upson/Lescott

Johnson Gerrard Barry Lampard Cole

Rooney Defoe/Cole/Heskey

If Joe Cole is fit then I'd look at taking it back to 442 with him on the left in midfield and dropping Upson/Lescott.

Interesting idea but I don't think English players have the intelligence to operate outside of 4-4-2
