To begin, the line up looked perverse. Why bring in Vaz Te, Maynard and Morrison and then start with a team that has no width and screams negativity? To be fair, Tomkins played superbly in the holding midfield role and Faubert had his best ever game for the club, but it was no surprise to see Millwall seize the initiative from the start. By the time Nolan was sent off, the possession percentage was 60:40 in Millwall's favour. Brilliant! Allardyce really fired them up after that 5-1 midweek thrashing!
Nolan deserved his red card. The tackle was shocking, a real leg breaker had he connected mid way up the shin or full on the ankle. It was a ridiculous challenge. Not that it mattered. Nolan has been a passenger for most of the season and the team simply continued as if he was there - or wasn't there, because as this game showed, he offers so little beyond gobbing off.
In fact without Nolan we played better. The passing through midfield was some of the best I have seen this season, until we reverted to the long lump up to Cole. But a man short, the long ball out was more justified. Offensively and defensively, Faubert was superb. He narrowly failed to get on to a McCartney cross in the first half and he was up and down the right flank all afternoon. His header against the bar early in the second half deserved a goal. The McCartney cross was superb and Faubert's movement - amazingly - and the header - even more amazingly - were fantastic. In fact, and I am pinching myself here, Faubert's movement in the second half was little short of sensational. He actually read the game! And he changed codes superbly for the Reid winner.
Cole's header for his goal was superb too. He bent his neck back and got real power on the ball after Reid stood it up from Noble's free kick. And the Reid finish was fantastic. I was expecting the referee's whistle from the moment Faubert took Forde out of the game, but Reid didn't care, he just drove it like a Tiger Woods drive on a long Par 3. Hard and straight, right down the middle.
Vaz Te came on and looked lively and Taylor edged himself back closer to full functioning capacity. We need his set pieces. Sadly Collison is looking more ordinary by the game. Another Academy Nearly Man perhaps.
The Millwall goal was a mess with Del Boy Trotter driving home beautifully after Faye played the Plonker Rodney role to perfection, dwelling on the ball in his own six yard box. What a dipstick. But he was good apart from that! The best thing you can say about the whole performance is that you wouldn't have known we were down to ten men. But then with Nolan on the pitch, we are effectively starting each game with 10 men anyway!
Player Ratings: Green 5 (Another kicking error), O'Brien 6 (one lovely shot just over), Faye 6, Reid 7, McCartney 7, Tomkins 8 (superb in the holding role), Noble 8 (tigerish in the tackle and a lovely range of passing), Faubert 9, Collison 5, Nolan 0 Cole 8 Subs Taylor 6 Vaz Te 6 O'Neil 5

And I think everybody should praise Mark Noble for showing everyone what a west ham captain should be like ran his socks off made some crunching tackles started alot of attacking moves and his set pieces we quality. Just proves who the real captain should be...
Fully agree with your analysis. That starting line up was a joke it really was. Pleased we won. At least with Nolan out we might start playing some football.
it was a great team effort, with noble and faubert as the shining beacons to follow! a deserved victory, and i guess there will be celebrations tonight..and judging by what's going on at loftus road, i sense a post bound to anger the gRs:D
A good summary Fanno.
Like most I was very concerned when I saw the starting line up and after we started on the back foot I was even more concerned. The sending off(justified) did change the game but amazingly in our favour and that was the best performance I have seen from us this season.
Noble was my MOTM just ahead of Faubert, how unlucky was here with his header? Agreed my boy Tomkins had a good game though you wouldn’t believe it in the text exchanges I was having with my sparring partner, hope he looks in here!
Faye was at fault for their go others-wise he was immense so your mark of 6 is a bit harsh. It will be interesting to see how we now go without Nolan for 3 games and interesting to see the shape of Sam’s team without him.
A good afternoon which I now hope gets better as I settle down to hopefully watch England put our “friends” north of the border to the sword.
Very accurate description about the match today HF. Faubert was clearly the man of the match today and Tomkins as well as Noble had a really good game. But the problem of not being to put the ball down and pass it in the middle of the field is still there. Against a better team than Milwall we may have well dropped another three points today. But we are thankful for the three points and let's hope that Taylor coming back and the new recruits can finally help in putting a team together that can pass the ball, create and score chances. Nolan's absence in the next few games might also be a blessing in disguise.
When's the penny going to drop? We looked a better side with ten men and no Nolan than we have recently when he plays.
Tomkins did well in midfield but if he has to play there because Diop is injured, shouldn't we have addressed this during the transfer window?
I always felt we were unlucky over the years as a club but my got we're balancing the books this year, our second goal was beautifully struck but it should have been disallowed.
Overall well done today, Noble was immense but the best news is that Nolan will be banned for three games; a chance to play a system that suits the players we have.
Noble had a good game after his rest against Ipswich. Of all our players, Faubert has shown most improvement this season, just ahead of Reid. How Cole got that much power in the header I don't know
I agree with Rev that Faye deserved a better review. He was third behind Faubert and Nolan in the MOTM contest. And Sav, you are incorrect that Nolan's absence will be a blessing in disguise. The disguise is not neeeded. I hope we appeal, lose, and they add a game.
And Bkackpool just beat Cardiff.
Noble had a better game than Faubert!
Bad typo there Dave! Nolan joint man of the match? Noble no doubt!
Guys, how can you rate Faye above 6 when he was badly at fault for the goal we conceded? He could have cost us two points! Yes he played well apart from that, but being fault for a goal in a three goal match MUST shave 2 marks off your rating surely?
Agree about Noble. He was very good for most of the game and tigerish in the tackle, but he did lose possession a couple of times just outside our box, a bad habit of his as Stani keeps pointing out. That apart, his range of passing and superb defensive covering show cased his talent superbly. I felt that he and Tomkins both played like captains, and that Faubert and Cole put in a fantastic shift too. Where was Millwall's extra man?
Unforgivable one, HF. Im too old to multi-task I guess. Cant make lunch for the kids AND type.
Stupid mistake from Faye - to be fair, he has been better all season so far. Faubert tireless. Noble excelklent. Best of all, Noble wasn't even mi9ssed - in fact we played better once he was gone. But it was only against Milwall....
must have gone off to eat some more pie with Nolan?
Same mistake (in reverse) has just been made by 1809. Noble, Nolan, Nouble...sounds like declining a Latin verb!
Hi guys sorry it's not really about the match but just wondering if anybody can tell me the correct date for the last home game of the season? Iv seen 28th April v hull on the net but sounds like its abit early to me. This is from a northern hammer looking come to celebrate the final game and hopefully promotion.
That is correct, Jack.
Thx Dave hopefully see many of u there.

Hang on HF. Just before the game you had Nolan in your preferred team for today. Now you are slagging him off saying that he offers 'little beyond gobbing off'. For what it's worth I agree with your revisionist opinion but why did you have someone who offers so little in your team when we had other options?
Once again you are wise after the event but ignorant before it.
Great day for West Ham. Big result. Great results elsewhere and now we have a chance to select a productive midfield where Nolan isn't can't be un-deserved shoe-in.
Because I knew Allardyce wouldn't drop him. I've been identifying Nolan as a problem for some time now. We can't find balance with him in the team.
Anony-mouse says
I don't think so HF- your article said 'my preferred team' not 'the team I think Allardyce will play'. You had Nolan in your team.
Agreed though that you have been (rightly) slagging off Nolan prior to this, so this just highlights your inconsistency. Slag him off. Have him in YOUR 'preferred team'. Slag him off hours later.
You. Know. Nothing.
Note the word "preferred" not my "ideal" team. My ideal team would have had Cole with Maynard up top, but I knew Allardyce wouldn't do that. Actually my ideal team would feature Messi and Silva but...
Anony-mouse says
So just to clarify. You wouldn't have had Nolan in your 'ideal' team but you did have him in your 'preferred' team. That distinction may make perfect sense to you but is lost on me so I think i'll leave it there. Night night.
Must be hard for you to grasp. My "preferred" team was selected within the confines of our squad and what I knew would be Allardyce's tactical formation. I would go 4-4-2, or even 3-5-2, using Faubert and Taylor as wing backs, but I knew Allardyce wouldn't.
So MY ideal team would set up
Green
Reid, Tomkins, Faye
Faubert Taylor
Noble, Lansbury Collison
Cole Maynard
Allardyce aint ever going to be that brave though is he? Unless Tomkins in a holding role was the first step towards this!
4-3-3 might work now with Vaz Te on the left and this new Faubert on the right!
Anonymouse made you look a mong.
Faubert's assist for the goal was the highlight for me! Very, very funny! You actually see him looking where the goalie is before taking him out on the slow mo replay!
Praising yourself again 0001?
18:21 you are so far up your own arse, you horrid and conceited little man.
Anony-mouse - we salute you!
