Hammond Shock Horror Discovery

Bloody hell, Philip Hammond has clearly been on the road to Damascus over the last fortnight! The Secretary of State for Defence has recognised that the British Military, in some circumstances, offer a better option than the private sector!

Bless! Just imagine, if not for the Olympics, Hammond might have used G4S in Afghanistan! Should the Argies ever attack the Falklands again, without the lesson of the Olympics, Hammond might have sent in the private sector, recruiting students and foreign nationals, asking them to supply their own guns, and arranging for Ryanair to fly them down to the South Atlantic!

Why did it need the G4S farce to show Hammond and the Tories the value of our armed services? Is there anybody outside of the Conservative Party that doesn't appreciate the professionalism of our servicemen?

It amazes me that nobody was asked to fall on his sword over the G4S scandal, but then in a Jobs For The Boys Tory Government, how could a member of the club be blackballed? Black balls in the Tory Party? It's bad enough for the members having a token Asian Chairman and she has no balls for a reason!

I'm struggling to find an angle with this one, HF. Can we at least move back to football??

Oh dear. Yet another major embarrassment as this time hf tackles politics with the all intellect and finesse of Bernard Manning after a serious head injury. You really should rename this post, letter from a cretin springs to mind. What is a token Asain,by the way. For anyone who didn't know what an idiot you are and post serious comments. This is your advert. Puerile nonsense.

Last time I checked, none of 'our boys and girls' have died answering the call of this government to help with the Olympics. However they are still dying and being maimed by the sheer folly of a decision made by the previous government.
''We'll keep the red flag flying .......''
Post that !

Stick to football, and don't bore us all with your obviously biased politics. At the moment you have got more Leeds United fans blogging than Hammers fans, so don't be a silly arse and lose the few that are still with you.

Yep Lord Canning, the invasion of Iraq was disgraceful which is why I voted against Blair at the next election. It hurt to support the Tories but when a Prime Minister launches an illegal war, vindicated by lies and sexed up dossiers, democracy demands that you vote against the man responsible.

Mind you, Labour warned against Double Dip inspired by cutting too far and too fast, and what's happened?

@HF I was gonna come and say how despite our difference in football allegiance our political outlook is surprisingly similar. Though football has little bearing on that of course.

Having read your comment re voting tory though I am sad to say. I am wrong. Surely their were other options than voting tory. Abstain even.

How can you moan about them when you voted them in? Did they really manage to sucker you with the "no more nasty party" rhetoric?

Thanks very much HF. It didn't just hurt you - now we're all bleeding.

Visited the olympics and the army were, as one would expect, brilliant as usual.

As for your attempt to align their professionalism and integrity with your political persuasion- shameful! Truely, remarkably, astonishingly shallow and shameful. - and I vote Labour!

I was referring more to Afghanistan actually. None of ours have perished in Iraq for a few years now.
Labour warned against double dip? ok. But Labour have been a bit short on what their remedy would have been.....borrow borrow, pay back tomorrow? Been there before haven't we? They would never offend their paymasters in Unison by advocating the necessary savings in the public sector. Inflation proof final salary pensions payable at 55? Sounds familiar? That's what they did in Greece.

All good points HF but when are you going to admit you were wrong about Paolo?
or more to the point admit I was right and Paolo should have been appointed not Dr Evil

Wrong election 1920, I didn't vote Tory last time around. Mind you, I did vote Lib Dem to stop the Tory and look where that got me! I suspect our politics are not that different from one another DLF.

Lord Canning, it's not down to how many of your own die, apply that logic and we would never have taken up arms against Hitler and the Nazis. There was some logic in invading Afghanistan - albeit the logi was flawed - there was none in invading Iraq, apart from oil and pleasing George Bush Senior and Junior.

As for Labour policy, you have a much better health service than the Tories left behind, better roads, a better rail service, better schools etcetera. If Blair had been brave enough to tax the wealthy and to control the banks, we wouldn't be in the present mess. But Blair was a Tory in Labour clothing, looking after business before he looked after people.

1931, I am responding to the absurd comments of Hammond. Ask 10million people who they would want to protect them during the Olympics, the military or a private security company and 999,999 would opt for the military. The one person who would opt for G4S would be a doctrinaire Tory, probably getting a back hander for supporting the G4S bid. Bugger the general public, I'm on a promise of a non executive directorship if I back G4S!
