If Sunderland's Jack Colback is the answer, we are asking the wrong question!

So the latest big white carrot topped hope is apparently Jack Colback, because he is available on a free from Sunderland. Allardyce regards him as the best player presently available for nowt but he would wouldn't he? Colback is an Allardyce type of player - high on energy and effort but very seriously lacking in one key department.

Question. Aged 24, how many goals has Colback scored over his career? Answer, ten.

Even more seriously, how many has he scored in the Prem? Answer, four.

Why did we struggle last season? We didn't score enough goals. So how is four goal Colback going to improve the situation exactly? When you play a single striker, you need midfield players who can score goals. Noble can't. Diame can't. Downing can't. Jarvis can't. So why add another goal shy player to the "armoury" exactly?

Somebody tell Allardyce we need GOALS!

Just a younger version of Gary O'Neill. No skill but runs about a lot.

As a Sunderland fan can I give an HONEST opinion about Ginger Jack?
He is a bits and pieces player who will never let a side down at all, but don't expect him to take a game by the scruff of the neck and turn a 0-2 after one hour into a 3-2 win.
He has only scored four PL goals in around a hundred appearances so he is no Kevin Nolan[it would have been five if he hadn't hit the post against West Ham when we beat you 3-0 in January 2013]but in a backs-to-the-wall 1-0 with a few minutes left he will use the ball wisely. All in all a bit sorry to see him go but if West Ham are daft enough to offer him three times what he has been offered by ourselves [allegedly] he will go with our blessing.I cannot help but think in Mark Noble you have pretty much the same type of player though.

As a Sunderland supporter few of us will denigrate the loyalty and 100% effort that Jack brought to almost every game he played in but he is a back passing defensive thinker and player.

If you are in need of such talents he is your boy, he deserves a big pay day in his career and this is likely to be his first and last chance. If it is goals you are looking for Alladyce is wearing blinkers. How glad we were not to get him as our manager, sincere though he may be..

I'm a S'land fan and think that Colback is a reliable player. But if you're looking for a defence-unlocking passer of the ball who will bag you a lot of goals and boss the midfield, then you're looking in the wrong direction. I'll not be too heartbroken to lose him to be honest.

He's a reliable pair of boots and won't lose the ball and keep it simple and is not injury prone. But we call him the crab because he passes sideways too often, and backwards.
Mind you, a great squad player who can also play LB.

I disagree, i think that Colback would be a good signing as he s on a free with only wages to pay. true he dose not seem to have scored many goals but his running at opponents ,from the times I've seen him play, and his vision for a through ball, hard tackling with the ability to dribble out of trouble would suggest to me that hes a very ,very good signing it it comes off... bigger clubs are after him too. Dont forget Swansea, Everton, Hull are all after this fine fotballer

I have never seen him play. But i'll guess he's not a patch on Morrison. So why in Hell don't we pay Morrison what he's worth and forget about Colback????? Probably because he's upset Chubby and his best mate kevin!!!

Ten times a better footballer than Morrison will ever be... he will not hide and is just as sklllful and with back bone from the challenges he made on kevin u when they played up there this season.....
