Of course, Upson is now loathed at Upton Park after packing up his captain's armband and chasing bigger money elsewhere. Gold sees no difference between Green's actions and Upson's and I anticipate the outcome being much the same. Green will not end up first choice at a top club. He may earn more, but to find a first team berth he will have to join a club with a smaller fan base - maybe QPR or maybe West Bromich Albion. Upson's England career is now a fond memory and his Stoke career has hardly been a runaway success has it?
I'm not going to wish Green well. He was plucked from little old Norwich and given a shot at the big time with West Ham. He may feel aggrieved that the likes of Dyer, Upson and Parker earned more whilst he shared a dressing room with them but he earned more than he would have done at Norwich or a host of other middling rank teams. Meanwhile, he has been idolised by 99% of West Ham fans and put up on a pedestal that his performances have hardly deserved. And how has he rewarded that support? By running down his contract and walking away on a free.
I can't wait for Green to wake up from his West Ham bubble and find that the grass is not always greener, as the words of his anthem should remind him!
Then I awake and look around me, at the four grey walls that surround me
and I realize, yes, I was only dreaming.
For there's a guard and there's a sad old padre -
arm in arm we'll walk at daybreak.
Again I touch the green, green grass of home.
Yes, they'll all come to see me in the shade of that old oak tree
as they lay me neath the green, green grass of home.

I'm Welsh HF, so thanks for the song, always brings a tear to the eye. Unlike you, you grumpy sod, I do wish Green well. However, I am not remotely bothered he has left, as I think he has been a bit of a liability since 2007, and has cost us as many points as he was won in recent years. I suspect we did not try too hard to keep him purely as I think Sam does not rate him that highly. Thanks for the service Rob, thanks for 2007 and good luck - just save your clangers for when you play us (or Wales!), you know Sam will have our forwards all over you!
My sentiments exactly HF
Anony-mouse says,
Not that Gold did put him in the same bracket as Upson (you and your 'eye-cayching' headlines eh, HF), but had he done so he'd have been wrong. We have got our money's worth out of Rob- we never did with Upson. Green cared- Upson ever gave a toss.
The club have apparently belatedly offered him the sort of money that he wants so it looks like he's leaving on principle rather than because of sheer greed. Whether it works out for him remains to be seen.
I'll remember him for many things but particularly his display at Arsenal in the 'great escape' season. Alongside Parkes's heroics at WBA in the cup the year we won it that was the greatest display by a West Ham keeper since I've been watching them.
So good luck Greeno. Most of us will fondly remember you. And rest assured that HF is in a very small minority if he's trying to bracket you with the likes of Upson.
ps HF- Regarding your other thread that says we should have seven (seven!?!) new first teamers including Kalou and Bosingwa: Keep it real my man. Keep it real.
If Nolan can be given 65k a week then green can certainly be given 50k a week he's been a servant to west ham and deserves a reward he's stuck with us through thick and thin even with his own personal battles he played and did a great job for west ham sad to see him go awesome keeper on his day rather him than jussi, Robinson and stockdale any day hope he plays a blinder against us so the two David's can see what a mistake they have made.
I don't say we will get them, I simply point out that there are a lot of Premiership quality players available on a free Anony-mouse. Of the lot I highlight, I would go for the 101 Dalmations slayer for his versatility (although O'Neill wants him!, Mohamed Diame because he is good and only in his mid twenties, Jussi obviously, Rodallega because he is class in my opinion and can play down the middle or wide and Pogrebnyak becuase he scores and leads the line well. Wouldn't mind Shorey either. In fact, I wouldn't mind all of them! Better than most we currently have on our books surely?
And Gold did mention Upson and Green in the same tweet, saying Upson had done the same thing!
Anony-mouse says,
I didn't see that HF butl if he did then he's got it wrong and is onto a loser if he's trying to damn Greeno by association with Upson. Different kettle of fish entirely.
There's problems with a lot of the types of freebies that you mention. Firstly we will in all likelihood be quite a way down the pecking order when it comes to the likes of Kalou and Bosingwa. Even if we could get them I don't feel they would be motivated by a move to us after winning upteen trophies at Chelsea. We've had too many players over the years who can't get up for it with us once they feel their careers are on a downward trajectory. We can't afford to make those kind of mistakes again.
I'd like us to be going for younger hungrier players- I thought the likes of Zaha would be beyond us but apparently that one is a possibility. And also older pros who have shown they are committed even when at less glamourous clubs. I'm talking about the likes of Yakubu. Holt is mentioned today- he would fit the bill as well cos his attitude on the pitch is spot on. If he could do a job for us over the next two years and hopefully help us re-establish ourselves in the top flight that would be a fine signing.
31, like the Norwich board said, too old for a 3 year contract. Suspect he will be average next year. Happy to let Villa have him. As you know, I agree re Yakubu, but Rodallega has served Wigan well and would be a step up for him. And I liked the look of Fulham's Russian. Looks worth a punt. No great fan of Kalou personally and agree with what you say about the Chelsea boys. Also hope to see us bringing in some youth and Zaha looks promising.
How about Silvio Proto, From Anderlecht ?
How about Lukaku, on loan, from Chelsea, where he is fed up of not getting his chance ?
Cul de sac
Anony-mouse says,
I don't know about Rodallega HF. Or Fulham's Russian guy. Rodallega is a good player- but I don't think he scores as many as he should, or we'll need. I'm amazed the Russian was released after his excellent start. I was too tied up in our end of the season to pay much attention but I presume he finished the season quietly at Fulham. He looked quality but if he's petered out there already it doesn't bode well. Quite prepared to be put right on any of that though.
I like Holt. I agree that next season he may find it hard to live up to the excellence of this season. But if he delivered three quarters of what he did for Norwich then that'd be fine by me. He would be the type of player, just like Yakubu who could play the front role on his own, take pressure off Carlton, whilst at the same time providing competition for his place which is healthy. It would also help deplete Norwich who I feel will struggle next season.
Who knows- so many names get mentioned that I tend to keep away from transfer threads until players have actually signed/ left but it should be an interesting few weeks nonetheless.
Green stayed to do a season in the championship - has never spoken out of team - has remained fit and has worked his contract. Why the bitterness?
Rodallega has 2 goals this season and the season before failed to reach double figures despite playing 36 out of the 38 games, he makes carlton cole look world class and he is only about 5'10, you need to atleast reach double figures if your not leading the line and wining headers
Gold's tweets are akin to Goebbel's uttering Green has not been offered any contracts
Gold and Sullivan are like politicians you only need to see their mouths moving to know they're lying
Green probably does not want to be in another relegation fight with West Hams current squad which looks weak.
QPR look a much safer bet according to the bookies
'He was plucked from little old Norwich and given a shot at the big time with West Ham.'
Given a shot at the big time with West Ham! You are either joking or seriously deluded. I can see another bubble bursting.
