West Ham 2 Chelsea 1

Another from the archive, this one from October 24, 2001. As we head back into the Prem, it is cheering to remember that we finished seventh that season - a feat we were to repeat under Pardew in our first season back up last time of course.

This game is notable for two excellent goals from Carrick and Kanoute and for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbank's superb reply and unlucky shot against the angle of post and bar. Defensively we were poor - hardly surprising with a back four that included Schemmel, Daily and an aged Winterburn, but there are some lovely flashes of Kanoute's, Di Canio's and Sinclair's skill when we have the ball. A young Defoe also features briefly, and Hislop prevents Lampard from scoring for Chelsea.

It was all to go horribly wrong the following season, of course. This was Roeder's honeymoon season, the nightmare followed in 2002-03.

Anony-mouse says,

This was some game. We got both our goals early on and then they battered us for much of the remainder.

Sure it was Lampard's first game back at UP. I was a season ticket holder in the BML back then. I lay my claim to be the first to start singing 'he's just a fat, lazy w*nker' at this game. Not witty but accurate. Before you knew it three sides of the ground were singing it. See, i've always been a gobby, objectionable little oik!

Amazing how similar the two goals were!
