Downing from Liverpool? Will we never learn?

Dear God, let's hope the rumour is wrong. Why the hell would any club pay £6m for that perennial underachiever?

OK, I accept that we could do with some more pace in the team, but the guy is approaching 30 and has never been anything other than an ordinary player. In many ways, he embodies the demise of Liverpool FC, a mediocre player who would never have got anywhere near their squad during the great years. Like Milner, he has far too many England caps; in fact, one international cap is one too many.

Yes, as a kid at Miserablebrough he looked half decent, but his potential has never been realised and it was an act of gross folly when Liverpool forked out a fortune to buy him.

Of course, the big concern must be that money is being spent to strengthen an area of the team that does not especially need strengthening. We have Cole, Jarvis, Vaz Te, Morrison, Maiga and Collison who can play wide; what we urgently need is a striker who can play down the middle!

Re: the need to sign a striker who can play down the middle -- might be worth putting in a bid for that Andy Carroll.

perfect signing for us to give us balance. Jarvis being right footed playing on left and downing being left footed playing on right. perfect symmetry both providing crosses in for the likes of carroll from either wing. downing would provide a lot of assists

perfect age. footballers are at their peak at 30

I don't mean to insult you, HF. But Sam has more experience in the EPL than either of us. So if he thinks its a good move, I'm all in.

More importantly....238-9?

He is not as bad as you say, compare him to others as this Manu site has, and you will see, check out the blog below.

Completely agree. What nonsense.

And what does this say about the purchase of Jarvis who we spent £10+ million on? £17m competing for the same position? Very efficient use of funds.

LOL Dave, today was one of the worst day's cricket I have ever seen. Drab attritional stuff from both teams. Australian bowlers bored out our batsmen, and we batted as if the pitch was a rice pudding with hidden landmines. A terrible advert for the game!

Hammersfan said...

Stani, I'm surprised at you! Why would we play a left footed winger on the left? Don't be daft man, that's not the way the modern game is played! Wasn't that always your argument for playing Stanislas on the wrong wing?

Hammersfan said...

0030, we let you pay silly bloody money, then buy your rejects at knock down prices.

You need to watch a more exciting team HF....like I do.

By the way, what does Michael Carberry have to do to get a look in? See his t20 century the other day?

Stani said...

HF, I'm not talking about what I would do, I'm talking about what Allardyce will do. I'd be surprised if he plays Downing on the right. But regardless, we should not be buying such mediocrity

t20? How long before the guy behind the man on strike wears a grill over his face and after the pitcher has hurled in the ball, the batter runs round a bloody circle to record a home run? Don't you dare suggest inclusion in a test match should ever be based on the Asian sub continent's bastardisation of the noble game of cricket!

And what's exciting about watching your team? Guessing which over the spot fixed no ball will be bowled in? Sorry, couldn't resist!

Whats with all these crap teams poopooing (if you forgive the pun :D) our reject players?

Just cos he aint good enough for Liverpool doesnt mean he aint good enough for you?

Take our car boot sale crap and be thankful for it.

Miserableborough??? Christ, how old are you? Thats the language of a troll and not a self respecting blogger who takes their job seriously. Grow up! I stopped reading at that point you obviously have the brain of a 10year old.

I figure England might get 20 more runs, max. But it makes you wonder if runs on that pitch will be hard to come by for Australia as well? War of attrition might be a better description than you realize.

I fell for the game during the first two tests. Absolutely compelled by the many elements. One drab game won't ruin it for me.

Liverpool is a bad joke.

You seem to contradict yourself, you say that he embodies the demise of LFC then go onto say that the paid a fortune for him,(England International) considering that Martin O'Neil paid 15 million when he was injured after which he went on to have a largely successful club and International career, bearing this in mind it reasonable to assume that his value would increase. For whatever reason Downing in his first 18 months at the club failed to deliver, but I have no doubt, Should your club buy him would be getting a very fast skillful player with something to proove

Would be a decent signing in my humble opinion. Not a top 4 player but he would be an improvement to our side and another step in the right direction.

BTW nice to see that you are alive and well :-)

We need a supplier for Carroll and I think Downing could do the job for us under BS also I think we should take a risk and not sign a striker and give Elliot Lee, Paul McCallum, Blair Turgott a chance it seem ages since we had a academy player make the first team.

Milner is an infinitely better player than downy because his football education happened at a real football club and not an industrial estate, Milner deserves every England cap he has had and has never let England down. Perhaps if you lot understood simple facts such as those above you wouldn't end up with overpriced shite like carrol and downing.

Tom Ince!! A far better option.

Lol 0043 perfect symmetry! Lets jjust hope he provides more assists to the likes of Carroll than Jarvis did last year.

As long as you keep playing the 'West Ham way' though!!!!

Lets face it, we could be linked with Messi and Ronaldo and there'd still be people moaning about it!!.... Stewart Downing is a really good player and will greatly improve our squad, I do wonder about how much some people actually know about football, his time at Liverpool hasn't been great but the team and style don't suit him.

Kevin in manchester... the ways of cricket are mysterious and , while it doesnt look good now, you can never assess a score until both sides have batted. The average first inning score at Chester le Street this summer has been 253.

Stani said...

Err, I was talking about Carberry the player, his form, HF, not t20 cricket. It just so happens his last innings was in that format...where he scored a hundred...in a format in which it's difficult to score a hundred. I thought you might have been able to comprehend that.

They are the most exciting cricket team in the world. Straight up. Natural gifted and immensely talented. You can prefer to watch the other drivel if you want :)
