So, faced with an uphill struggle to avoid relegation - confirmed by our truly inept performance at Swansea - Allardyce has decided to concentrate on the league before we've even kicked a ball in the Capital One Cup. Great!
He's not quite worded it like that of course. The positive spin has it that we are trying to generate competition for places by playing the stiffs against Crewe but we know that there's no point in crap competing with crap for a place in the side. Unless we recruit a left back at the very least, we are more than likely going down. You can probably add to that a keeper after Jussi's showing at Swansea - age catches up with us all - a right back, a centre back, a creative midfielder and a goal scorer. Half a bloody team in other words!
I have always hated the defeatist attitude of concentrating on the league. We start the season with three competitions to win, the two cups and avoiding relegation, and reducing the target to one does nobody any good. A thumping win over Crewe would breed confidence, an embarrassing exit will increase the doubts about the squad Allardyce has assembled.
In fact, if we lose, Allardyce should be shown the bloody door!
