Shearer is to blame for Newcastle's plight, not Howard Webb!

King Al is apparently fuming that the serf with the whistle failed to go down on bended knee before the Almighty and help the carToons to a desperately needed victory yesterday. According to His Highness, the "goal" Newscastle scored should have been allowed to stand, in which case he would have maintained his stunning return of a point a game which, in a normal season, would see the Barcodes through to 38 points and...er relegation.

Caught up in the "should have been a goal" objections, the Messiah on the Tyne seems to have forgotten how he hoodwinked referees every game by backing into centre halves then collapsing forward, pulling the defender down on top of him in the process. How many of Shearer's goals came either directly or indirectly from free kicks won in this way? Some might call that cheating but for the Divine Nine, it was just a run of the mill tactic to gain an advantage, unfair or otherwise. And "putting a player on the keeper" is in the same vein.

A proclamation was issued from upon His Highness's throne which read, "You are allowed to put someone in front of the goalkeeper - I am not aware that you are meant to get out of the way of him. I thought their player was blocking him more than Kevin Nolan was, so I am disappointed with that."

Now tell me, who is supposed to mark who in the box? Aren't the defenders meant to be marking the attackers? So why exactly would the attacking team put a player on the keeper? other, of course, than to obstruct him and block his route to the ball. In fact King Al admits as much in his second sentence when he says, "I thought their player was blocking him MORE than Kevin Nolan", so His Highness concedes that Nolan was there to prevent the keeper getting to the ball and was doing precisely that when the goal was scored, to a greater or lesser degree.

The point is, freekicks are given every week when it appears as if a keeper has been impeded. We might think that is unfair, we might feel that keepers are excessively protected, but that's just how it is! If you CHOOSE to make the referee's decision to molly coddle the keeper even easier by standing a player in front of him, inviting complaints before the corner is even taken, then it becomes almost inevitable that a free kick will result. Tell me, if the goal would have been legitimately scored without Nolan blocking the keeper, why station him there in the first place?

King Al should stop moaning about Webb and start looking at the real reason why Newscastle are on the brink of relegation. When he took charge he identified three must win games and he and his team have won only one of them. Even had that "goal" stood, they would still only have won one of the three! Portsmouth, Miserableborough and Fulham at home - now honestly, if you can't pick up at least two home wins from those games, you don't deserve to stay in the Premiership do you? The fact is, Newcastle would already be relegated now in a normal season because they can only reach 37 points even if they win at Villa. Even with the draw against Fulham and a win at Villa, they would still only be on 38 points, the same number of points Shafting United were relegated with, and four points less than Glenn Roeder's side amassed when we went down. Howard Webb isn't to blame for this mess, Shearer is - he has failed to deliver the basics, let alone a miracle. He can't even stay afloat, never mind walk on water!

Will we see an Old pAL's act next weekend? Will Martin help Alan out for Match of The Day's sake? I hope not. I don't want to see Newscastle relegated but I don't want to see Shearer lauded as some carToon superhero either. His record as a manager speaks for itself and shouts at best ordinary and possibly even failure. Yet after that one win over Boro, he was ALready being described as "great". Well, if the carToons do go down, King Shearer will be to blame more than anybody in my book. He could have taken the job earlier but declined to do so, putting himself before the club. Then when he did accept the anointment, he came in with a clear road map for safety and somehow took a couple of wrong turnings. King Kev is dead, King Al may very soon follow!

I'm a WHU fan and have to disagree with you,I don't see your point that Shearer is to blame you should know that a manager can only tell the players what to do and when they cross the line it's down to them, and your point on averaging 1 point per game and having 38pts at the end of the season and still being relegated I think that 38 would keep them up, I'm not sure what you are trying to do by slating Shearer

It would THIS season Spence. My objection to Shearer is the way he declined to take the job until he thought he could claim the glory if he saved them but could avoid personal blame himself if they went down. I thought his actions were cowardly and said so at the time. Since he has been manager his decision making has been flawed. He failed to identify a team and stick with it, using 23 players in a handful of games. He also chose to pick Barton, despite all he said about the guy on MOTD. Then add in the failure to play Owen at Liverpool, which sent his number 10 into a sulk. Why do that? Newcastle were always going to lose the game so why upset a key player by dropping him? If Owen was going to score anywhere, it was at Anfield. Had he played and scored, even in a 5-1 defeat, I would have had money on him to fire Newcastle to safety. But Owen in a sulk? Funny the way that groin is now keeping him out again! And now Shearer is blaming Webb whilst involuntarily admitting that Nolan was in front of the keeper to obstruct him. Enough reasons? Oh and I do stand to pick up £1200 on a £20 double for Newcastle to be relegated and England to win the World Cup struck last December. Come on Hull City and Villa!

Well it's your opinion and you are entitled to it,personally I think the board made a huge mistake by giving shearer the job but then again it probably was just a p.r. exercise from Ashley so he comes out of this smelling of roses whatever happens

Hammersfan said...

I agree Spence. But you get what you deserve don't you? West Ham fans wanted Curbishley and look what happened! (I NEVER wanted the traitor!) The carToons were desperate for Shearer so Ashley delivered him.

I for one blame shearer for the mags plight !!! he accepted a job he was not qualified to carry out and has spent the last couple of months stumbling through games with a tactically inept team and no clue how to change things from the dug out. HE is not a king or a hero...he is a poor manager and will take his team dowm next sunday.

I can see hull losing to man utd, but i also think (after watching the mags under perform against pompey and fulham) that villa will have too much pace for them and will want to put in a good performance (on the back of a couple of dodgy results themselves) for the home fans and will comfortably beat newcastle.

for me, sunderland are already safe, but i think we'll get something from pompey tomorrow..then sit back and watch shearer relegate newcastle with his ..err...management skills !!! the king is dead..long live the king.....

You must be loving this, really loving this Mackem!

Very true and ha also delivered Keegan, and everyone (except NUFC fans) knew that would end in tears,I just don't see how a club can just fail to deliver every year,at least they are consistent, loose a few games a the start of the season=sack the manager, the new one comes in buys his players they fail to settle in straight away=sack the manager, and it seems that the fans decide who stays and who goes

englandsnumber6 said...

Newcastle had a good goal disallowed by Web so Web IS to blame for that one. Newcastle wont get relegated next week, WHU will beat Boro so thats them down, WBA are already down, and Hull will loose at liverpool so they go down.
i will be placing a bet on that treble next week and will expect to collect big bucks.....

the fact of this whole debacle is that ashley is the man to blame for this. he directly is the man who has single handedly tried to run this club as a business when football clubs simply are a hobby for billionaires nowa days. his idea to do this seemingly a good one but the fact of the matter remains his, stupidity, stubborness and greed has cost him milliones and the beloved fans of this club..(who are arguebly the most passionate in the country) he has penny pinched with the sales of milner and given and althoug writing off the clubs debt is no good if the club are relegated...if only he had pumped a few morer million to keegan instead of that dwarf pr*k dennis wise ( SEE Coloccini & Guttierez) the director role given to him was pathetic. ashley has had this wrong form the start its he who is to blame. shearer is out of his depth but by no means is this his fault! (and those who say he took this job in a no lose situation...he is a legend for club and country and you lot are slating him now...so he stands to lose his reputation because of muppets who just want to call him and blame him for this dire straights newcastle are in....he is in the firing line already, his club is getting relegated at his own hands but atleast he showed the true courage to step up and try and sort this out, knowing it was against the odds with a team lacking in actual quality to compete at all, he has not bought in players or built a sqaud, he inherited trash that was performing poorly...judge him on his performance when he builds a team!! were odds on to go down but we will know in 7 days! good luck the lads this club belongs in the top flight!

geordie for life, I love your passion mate but at the end there you proved my argument about Shearer. You trotted off all the excuses for him! The fact is, as bad as that Newcastle team is, with organisation and motivation they SHOULD prevail at home to Fulham and Pompey. Shearer has failed so far. Most managers, even ordinary ones, inspire the side in the first handful of games. Shearer hasn't!

So Shearer is to blame for a team that was already in the bottom 3 due to inept management over the whole season, yeah that makes sense, but then again, I'd expect that from a wet-spam & a team who should have been deducted 15 points for fielding an ineligable player who kept them from being relegated & oh shock, horror, that player then gets transfered to the team they beat on the last day of the season which kept you up, yes Manc Usa!
So tell me I'm wrong, I don't see how, considering you're having to pay Sheff £25m in comp for what happened, I'm surprised you're not in Administration due to your owner going bankrupt, lets see how your season pans out shall we!
Anway, back to the subject, I wonder what your blogg would say if it was the goal Tevez scored against Manc Usa which kept you from getting relegated?? probably nowt interesting, same as this blogg entry!

1404, Shearer picked the team and decided the tactics for the games against Pompey and Fulham didn't he? Or is he just the pretty face? Is Dowie the brains behind the throne? God help you!

Another pointless misinformed post that shows the authors true colours with his last reply. It is widely agreed that the ref made a mistake and ranting about the pratice of putting player in front of the keeper doesnt change the fact that every team in the league does it without being penalised including westham. The authors motive in critisising shearer is also questionable but its a popular bandwagon to jump on and sheep do like to follow the herd. I do like his reaction to the slightest critisism of his teams dealings. As they say people in glass houses . . . .

You have built yourself quite a cult of personality about Shearer haven't you? You're the only one going on about him being the King...

HAMMERFANS wrote:

Shearer has got no money nor a transfer window to make changes with has he? Motivation and organization only go so far, its the raw materials that fail.

You cannot polish a turd no matter how hard you try. The best you can do is to make it smell like a rose but in the end it still is a turd.

"Most managers, even ordinary ones, inspire the side in the first handful of games. Shearer hasn't!"er- how many games did Zola have under his belt as a gaffer until people stopped calling him inept? 10-15 games? Some still call him inept BTW...especially after the Chelsea game. By my count its was not until mid February when he hit his stride. His beginning was not very auspicious wasn't it?

While I agree that the Toon is not the greatest team ever, your reasoning for it, blaming Shearer, is bordering on the comical.

Shearer declined the job until it was understood he could have his way and get paid for it. Which means it was the owner rolling over and admitting he had a problem with his organization. Who would want a broken organization totell them what to do? 'Arry Redknapp? Stuck with Jokin'ere? Who else would have taken the job? seriously before you level the charge that Shear was selfish about it (in a negative way mind--that he could claim the glory) I d like your recommendation on ONE manager who would have stepped into that breach.

AND even if it was for the cynical reason you cite what bearing does that have on him being a manager? Seriously its as if you say "2+2=6 because I say so". you give no other reasons for it, no "Shearer should gave done this,..." or " he tried that but___"

But since you don't I'd like to ask: who is more the coward, you, the armchair pundit with a Blog and an over active opinion based on your reality, or the manager who is paid to put it on the line, publicly, via action in everybody else's reality?

Man up an support your theories with facts and not axe grinding and innuendo.

Oh right this is a blog, therefore reason and intelligence exited miles back...

Good response 1718, why not submit an article on what went wrong and when at Newcastle, I will carry it.

The King Al business is a joke on the King Kevin garbage and the way you Geordies build somebody up to the point where failure becomes inevitable. Nobody is as good as the Newcastle fans want them to be.

I am sure Shearer could have named his price when Keegan walked, or indeed when Keegan was there. He is teflon coated now for the reasons all you Geordies keep giving - it's not his team! I think that was deliberate on Shearer's part. I think he has a massive ego and that he is ultimately very selfish - he is in it for Alan and nobody else.

I'd love to manage West Ham but I wont get the job. I do put myself "on the line" here - more so than anonymous posters who just fire off criticism. The thing is, I put money on Newcastle to go down and predicted Shearer would fail when he was appointed. You might not like my opinions but my judgement has been sound so far!

You know what Hammersfan, ur an idiot who should take his opinions and shove them right u ur .......

I am a Newcastle fan and i would just like to say a couple of things.

No Toon fans asked for Shearer to come in as manager this season.
Mike Ashley did that himself to get back on the fans side.

No Newcastle fans (apart from the odd idiots sky sports pick out) have ever called Shearer a Messiah or anything of the sort as how would we know he will save us when he has never ever been a manager?
A legend yes, and quite rightly, That is something that the media have branded him as and make it out to be us Toon fans that call him that.

And lastly, you support West Ham, why do you care?
what is your problem?

Hammersfan said...

1740, I care because I care about football and don't actually want to see Newcastle in this mess. But when they are, it is a reasonable thing to discuss. Do you only have opinions on Newcastle? Maybe that's the problem, maybe Geordies don't realise that there are another 19 teams in the Prem and what happens at those clubs will impact on Newcastle. From a selfish point of view, I fancy us to finish above Hull next season whereas Newcastle have the potential to improve. If you go down, that will make it easier for us next season. But even then, I would prefer it if you weren't in this mess because I like Geordies and have always had a soft spot for Newcastle. But I don't like Shearer!

Anonymous said...

And why dont you like Shearer may i ask?
Because he has a lot of self confidence?
Because his love for Newcastle United shines through?

Ask yourself this, if you were Paulo Di Canio, who clearly loves West Ham, sitting at home watching their demise (ie like Newcastles) and you were then offered the job to help them out and try and help them survive would you sit there and watch or would you try and help them?

And also, like all other fans that slate Shearer, you said why didnt he take the job earlier. Well i will tell you why..BECAUSE HE WASNT OFFERED THE JOB EARLIER!!

I appreciate your concern for our club, but dont base your bias opinions on stuff you read from the media...PLEASE

hammers fan you have just admitted ur dislike for shearer, hence your biased opinion of him...

the OWNER IS TO BLAME FOR THIS

YOU CANT POLISH A TURD AND SHEARER CANT INVENT THE QUALITY IN A POOR TEAM WHO IS NOT UNDER ACHIEVING, THEY ARE ACHIEVING THEIR POTENTIAL WHICH IS LIMITED AND NOT TO THE STANDARD OF THE PREMIER LEAGUE!

Hammersfan said...

Are you seriously telling me Shearer couldn't have had the job earlier if he had wanted it? What were the discussions with Keegan and Joking Ear about then?

My dislike of Shearer dates back to England v Scotland at Wembley. England were losing the game but ahead on aggregate and Shearer as captain. An inxperienced mile Heskey was sent on as sub and jogged past Shearer as England prepared to restart play and Shearer, completely ignored him. No pat on the back, no words of encouragement, no clap of the hands, no "Come on!". Shearer was in his own zone. And that's the way Ginola described him in the Newcastle dressing room. He wasn't a captain and I doubt he is a manager. How boring is he on MOTD? Motivational? He sends me to sleep as soon as he opens his mouth!

Please do enlighten me with your amazing knowledge of Newcastle Uniteds business....

Could have had the job earlier, yes.
Did he think we were going to be this close to relegation at this time in the season, i dont think so.

It is one thing wanting a job and another thing being offered a job.

What nonsence this whole article is. I dont like shearer because he didnt pat heskey on the back? That the most ridiculous thing i have ever heard. Its laughable how the author has convinced himself that he has the inside track on the thoughts and motives of people that he has never even met. All the assumptions made without even a shred of evidence. Did it ever occur to anyone that the job wasnt offered to shearer because he wasnt a manager at the time and its only when things became desperate that he got the call? Its like saying that gary liniker should have taken over or gascoinge maybe? Zola had a shocking start but you didnt get toon fans ranting about him, nor did we weigh in when the hammers were almost relegated because it shows a lack of class to kick someone when they are down.

Hammersfan said...

Did Joking Ear have a management job when Newcastle appointed him? Er no. Did King Kevin? No. Did Glenn Roeder? Don't think so. How far do you want me to go back exactly?

Hammersfan said...

And the article itself makes NO reference to Emile Heskey - that just explains when I first got an insight into Shearer. I was at Wembley, about 30 yards away from Shearer as Heskey ran past. I was yelling encouragement, I was staggered when Shearer utterly ignored him!

I think you are wrong about the goal. I thought it was legit and a very soft award from the ref. It annoys the hell out of me that keepers get so much protection. I also can't see how Bassong got send off as, although he was the last man the rule is it has to be a 'clear goalscoriong opportunity'. A few yards inside the opponents half, with plenty to do is not enough in my opinion. Having said that, I was delighted they lost and hope they go down - they deserve it for their disgraceful treatment of Sir Bobby Robson, footballs greatest gentleman. I do agree with you that Shearer was in a no lose position when taking the post - keep em' up and he's a God, take em' down and it was all someone elses mess. I can't see Hull beating Man U on Sunday and I think Newcastle will draw at Villa Park and stay up...shame.

Anonymous said...

My point was that shearer was not and had never been a manager whereas kinnear and keegan obviously had been in the past. It takes a special type of stupid to miss that very obvious fact. But please do go back further its great when you make my point for me. To clarify for those who ride the special bus, a currently unemployed manager(even one thats been out of the game for a number of years and not that great to start with) equals a potential candidate if no one better comes along. Tv pundit earning a fortune in a no pressure job is not normally an option and therefore would not be offered a "managers" position hence my gascoigne analogy (although he isnt much of a pundit either). Now before you formulate a response please take a few second to ensure that what your saying has some relevence to what i have just said. I cant really dumb it down any more so try to concentrate.

You can form your own opinion on why shearer took the job but personally i think that he genuinely want to stop us going down and it was obvious to everyone that houghton and caldwell wouldnt have a chance. People say he is in a no lose situation but equally he could have just sat on the motd couch counting his millions and let us go down without a fight thats a real no lose situation, its not like he needed the money like keegan.

Hammersfan said...

His ego drove him to take the job in the end mate. He is crap on MOTD and knows it. He wants to be King Al, not the embarrassing guy who trips over his lines whilst squeezed between two patronising ex Liverpool centre backs.

Don't think Dalglish had a management job when Liverpool appointed him did he? Zola wasn't managing a club. Klinnsman was given the National job without any previous experience wasn't he? So it isn't unique and everybody knew he was biding his time before taking the job anyway - which just made it impossible for Keegan and Joking Ear to keep the dressing room. I think his shadow has played a big part in the sub standard performances of the team before his arrival. Why run through walls for Keegan, Kinnear or Houghton when you think Shearer will be your boss sooner or later?
