Shearer is to blame for Newcastle's plight, not Howard Webb!
King Al is apparently fuming that the serf with the whistle failed to go down on bended knee before the Almighty and help the carToons to a desperately needed victory yesterday. According to His Highness, the "goal" Newscastle scored should have been allowed to stand, in which case he would have maintained his stunning return of a point a game which, in a normal season, would see the Barcodes through to 38 points and...er relegation.
Caught up in the "should have been a goal" objections, the Messiah on the Tyne seems to have forgotten how he hoodwinked referees every game by backing into centre halves then collapsing forward, pulling the defender down on top of him in the process. How many of Shearer's goals came either directly or indirectly from free kicks won in this way? Some might call that cheating but for the Divine Nine, it was just a run of the mill tactic to gain an advantage, unfair or otherwise. And "putting a player on the keeper" is in the same vein.
A proclamation was issued from upon His Highness's throne which read, "You are allowed to put someone in front of the goalkeeper - I am not aware that you are meant to get out of the way of him. I thought their player was blocking him more than Kevin Nolan was, so I am disappointed with that."
Now tell me, who is supposed to mark who in the box? Aren't the defenders meant to be marking the attackers? So why exactly would the attacking team put a player on the keeper? other, of course, than to obstruct him and block his route to the ball. In fact King Al admits as much in his second sentence when he says, "I thought their player was blocking him MORE than Kevin Nolan", so His Highness concedes that Nolan was there to prevent the keeper getting to the ball and was doing precisely that when the goal was scored, to a greater or lesser degree.
The point is, freekicks are given every week when it appears as if a keeper has been impeded. We might think that is unfair, we might feel that keepers are excessively protected, but that's just how it is! If you CHOOSE to make the referee's decision to molly coddle the keeper even easier by standing a player in front of him, inviting complaints before the corner is even taken, then it becomes almost inevitable that a free kick will result. Tell me, if the goal would have been legitimately scored without Nolan blocking the keeper, why station him there in the first place?
King Al should stop moaning about Webb and start looking at the real reason why Newscastle are on the brink of relegation. When he took charge he identified three must win games and he and his team have won only one of them. Even had that "goal" stood, they would still only have won one of the three! Portsmouth, Miserableborough and Fulham at home - now honestly, if you can't pick up at least two home wins from those games, you don't deserve to stay in the Premiership do you? The fact is, Newcastle would already be relegated now in a normal season because they can only reach 37 points even if they win at Villa. Even with the draw against Fulham and a win at Villa, they would still only be on 38 points, the same number of points Shafting United were relegated with, and four points less than Glenn Roeder's side amassed when we went down. Howard Webb isn't to blame for this mess, Shearer is - he has failed to deliver the basics, let alone a miracle. He can't even stay afloat, never mind walk on water!
Will we see an Old pAL's act next weekend? Will Martin help Alan out for Match of The Day's sake? I hope not. I don't want to see Newscastle relegated but I don't want to see Shearer lauded as some carToon superhero either. His record as a manager speaks for itself and shouts at best ordinary and possibly even failure. Yet after that one win over Boro, he was ALready being described as "great". Well, if the carToons do go down, King Shearer will be to blame more than anybody in my book. He could have taken the job earlier but declined to do so, putting himself before the club. Then when he did accept the anointment, he came in with a clear road map for safety and somehow took a couple of wrong turnings. King Kev is dead, King Al may very soon follow!
