The View From Down Under - Salty Has His Say

I guess I state the obvious here, but while the FA, UEFA and FIFA sit on their hands, nothing is going to change.

While the huge sums that PL clubs have available to them exists, it is always going to be the case that these clubs will buy the best players that the world has to offer. One can't blame them; it's a natural thing to do.

However, the influx of foreign talent inevitably lessens the opportunities available for local (English) players to grow and improve their own games at the highest level. All but a few of the very best will be consigned to the lesser leagues where opportunities to develop and progress inevitably lessen.

The result is that the England national team must inevitably suffer; if for no other reason than there is a smaller pool of players available who have had experience at the highest level.

If the administrators of the PL are charged with progressing the PL, such a circumstance cannot be blamed on them. They only have to do what is good for the PL and its constituent clubs.

The problem is that of the Football Association's. My understanding is that the FA is responsible for managing and progressing football in England. That being the case you'd have to wonder why this situation is allowed to persist.

I think most people can see the problem and most can see what needs to be done. What is causing the FA to procrastinate so? Is it simple incompetence? The longer this remains unresolved the worse it will become for what was once a proud football nation.

The FA and the PL need to get their heads together and establish a structure where the financial advantage that the PL has over other world leagues is retained but tempered and balanced by the need to provide an appropriate level of growth opportunities for English footballers. It can't be all that difficult surely?

The problem is, of course, the power of the big clubs. Look at the Liverpool v Chelsea game this week - there were only three English players on the pitch and one of those, Carragher, has opted not to play for England. The 6/5 rule proposed by Platini seems the way forward but will anybody be brave enough to force it through? Somehow, I doubt it!

Now West Ham seem to be going the way of the others with a foreign manager and an increasing number of foreign signings. If you can't beat them, join them I suppose. But at this rate, Australia will be favourites to beat the England team in football as well as cricket and rugby!

Now like you to state the obvious Salty and it makes a refreshing change for you to be able to string more than one decent sentence out when discussing football.

He has done a bit better than you. I think the first word was meant to be "not" wasn't it?

I think the problem lies in the paragraph that asks for the PL and FA to get their heads together. Given our club's history with Tevez it isn't likely is it?

Money, power and politics (though not always in that order) - the way of the world.

Happily, for 90 minutes on whatever day and at whatever time TV has decreed - we are back to basics and our only focus is watching our team play football.

And football is what we have enjoyed this season. Whatever position we are in on 24 May, I have looked forward to every game -can we ask any more?

Being a junior 'hack' anon 22.37, I have to rely a good deal on my editor.

I have to say I was disappointed to see that, in a much more polite manner, he rephrased my expressed desire to see the Lucas led Aussies engage in a major 'reaming out' of the England team in South Africa. :-)

Our membership of the EEC means that putting a limit on the number of foreigners playing in our league is a tricky business. It is restraint of trade to put in rules and regulations which stop a player who has the legal right to work here from doing so merely because he is not English. So you would rely on a common agreement between clubs which at best would probably mean that any player who had spent some time here between the ages of 18 and 21 would be considered British for the sake of qualification to play as a home grown player. Would that really help?

Hammersfan said...

I think it would Marty. At the moment, as the recent fuss over the Manc's young Italian has shown, British clubs are exploiting some odd rules regarding offering contracts to kids on the Continent. Obviously, UEFA / FIFA would need to come up with uniform rules across the region, encouraging youngsters, without forcing them, to stay local. Let's face it, what 15/16/17 year old would really want to uproot from Italy and move to Manchester. Ronaldo seems pretty desperate to get back to the sun of Spain!

Salty, the image was just too disgusting!

el Martillo said...

I'm all in favour of persuading young players to stay local. But I think a talented and driven 16 year old with his eyes on the prize of a professional career would do virtually anything to realise his dream. Even, dare I say it; live in Manchester! As europe's top teams are mainly based in our country I think there would still be a mass of young players who would qualify as home grown, but not qualify for England. Or do we go the whole hog and let them play for the national team?

Nearly as disgusting as the image of Salty chasing young girls around a website.

Anonymous said...

When you say "our" Country Martillo are you talking about England?

Anon 09.24

But not as disgusting as a coward who can only make cheap jibes without giving himself a name. The young girl you mention claimed to be 19 and if indeed Salty did chase her there's nothing wrong with that. It was Salty who took steps to protect her and hopefully his actions have helped a rather troubled young lady to get her life back in perspective.
You on the other hand obviously have no life or you wouldn't waste your time with cheap remarks on a site that you criticise but seem unable to stop visiting.

Sorry, yes I am, it is one of my countries and the one that I currently reside in.

Hammersfan, is it not possible to have a log in facility on this blog? I appreciate that it would reduce the number of hits but in all honesty most of the Anons are a non-entity, and their comments range from inane to libelous. I'm all for freedom of speech and as you know am averse to censorship, but I do think that people should put a name to their comments.

Hammersfan said...

Marty, I know what you mean and I could set up a moderator approval system but then we end up going down the route of the org. I think it is best to remember that this is just a blog with a comment facility. Salty knows who he is but I don't think anybody else does. Some of the comments being made are in extremely bad taste but do reflect on the anonymous posters rather than on the people they are posting about. Mrs Lucas Neill fooled a lot of people over a long time on the org and was good value in her way. There was no need for Salty to reveal what he did - he actually protected the girl without question. I think some others who are now complaining may have been a little bit more "involved" than they care now to admit. I would not be at all surprised if our "anonymous" friend was actually exchanging emails with her and ended up very embarrassed when he found the truth. Easy then to try to deflect on to others! The fun game might be to try to second guess which of the orgsters is too afraid to reveal his identity when he posts. The suspects are limited and we could check language patterns / common spelling errors etc. Look at the Do to Liverpool strand - 202 comments and 80% are relevant / interesting / amusing. That wouldn't happen with a sign in provision. If anything is too offensive / personal, I will take it down but only as a very last resort. Freedom of speech and all that!

You on the other hand obviously have no life or you wouldn't waste your time with cheap remarks on a site that you criticise but seem unable to stop visiting. Now where have I heard comments like that before Fanny? That's right directed at all and your little clique month after month after month, seems you are becoming a little unsettled after just a couple of days. Like I said before what goes around comes around and as luck has it I do have a bit of spare time on my hands at the moment so might just hand around with you chaps if that is ok?

Hammersfan said...

Do hang around as long as you like. Still not man enough to leave a name?

Hammersfan said...

So it is Wrighty presumably. No longer in Shanghai, time on your hands over here. Why not set up a blog of your own mate?

Anonymous said...

Haven't been in Shanghai for about 2 years now !!! Just out of interest, why do you have to use my name on your blog so often. Whilst we had a lot of runnings, i cant see why you have so much hate for me, what exactly is it you fear? ps, only the second time i have posted on your site, if you remember the first one, that was also to disassociate myself from another rumour you had said about me. Please make replying statements or your questions rhetorical as i wont be back to answer them. pps, i really dont know why you cant just give up your grudge for anything .org; take this for instance, i have done nothing or said nothing to you on your blog but you still pressume it is me. I really dont get it. Wrighty

Hammersfan said...

Again Wrighty if I am Wrongy, I apologise. There are only three or four candidates. Your grammar errors tend to give you away, so, to be fair, I haven't felt convinced. It can't be 66, he doesn't use capital letters or full stops. May be one of the fully paid up members of the Klan I suppose. It is a problem when a poster is a coward and doesn't leave his name isn't it? Back in Chelmsford for two years? That's not what you said on the org mate. Were you telling fibs when pretending to be in a penthouse apartment out in the Far East, clicking buttons to destroy the Global economy? Buy at the bottom! Buy at the bottom! Let's drive the market lower! My research is showing house prices stabilising already. Remember the Feb 2010 prediction? You said that was too early, I reckon it might now be too late. What do you think? Looking at a flat today. Should I buy it?

Hammersfan said...

Postscript to Wrighty. It was the comment about coitus interruptus that made me think it was you. Didn't Salty suggest on the Org that was a split second decision that led to your conception? If I'm wrongy, sorry!

Hammersfan said...

...another postscript to Wrighty. I don't hate you mate, I don't know you! If you fancy a beer in town at some point we could see if we do dislike the people behind the posts. I am intrigued by all the pent up anger some seem to feel.

How about he joins us in the Boleyn?

Anonymous said...

The thing is mate it looks like there is more than one of us giving him a bit of his own medicine. As for me he probably doesn't even remember me but I remember him all right.

Hammersfan said...

Good idea! He could ride shotgun! So when are we meeting? Who am I meeting? How about a namd ducks? I'm really not too keen on blind dates, goodness only knows what you might look like!

Saltbush Bill said...

Whoa Fanno! That wasn't me who said that! Though I thought it humorous - I can't lay claim I'm afraid. From memory it may have been your Orange County mate; not sure now. It's all so long ago.

As for all the other stuff that's appeared on here in recent hours; I said a long time ago that I thought it was best to leave things alone and let that family get along with dealing with their problem. My original post at that time was a warning to others.

Never let the facts get in the way of a good story, eh?

I do thank both you and Marty for your support - your respective memories of the circumstances are spot on.

Interesting to see how the sicker, more cynical amongst us continue to purvey their disgusting insinuations and would seek to persist with that - anonymously. The comment above a perfect example. Not even brave enough to hide behind a nick-name. The cowardice and spinelessness is laughable really. He must be a really unhappy or just simply miserable individual.

The so called Klan and some of their servile attendants thought it was a real hoot at the time - they thought it extraordinarily funny if my memory serves me correctly. That "top bloke" Pete being one of them; all the time exhorting me, under the guise of friendship, to provide more personal information in respect of the whole episode.

Afternoon Trev sorry Bill how is life down under then? Don't give me all that saintly crap regarding the episode with MRSLN. You perved around her for weeks and it was extremely embarrassing. You only came on the site to talk absolute nonsense and clearly knew nothing about football. Now get back to researching your convict roots or maybe another spot of grooming.

Ha ha ha! You make me laugh - you are such a sily man. I'm going to heed the advice so often given on the .org. 'Dont feed the troll' LOL.
