Tottenham Knocking Gingerly On The Door Of Destiny

Don't shout it too loudly, but Tottenham could be Premiership contenders next season. They already have the best squad in the Prem in terms of strength in depth; if a bold approach is adopted and they sign three quality players, they could give Chelsea and Man Utd a run for their money next season - depending on how much Abromovitch spends this summer of course.

Thus far, Tottenham have capped their aquisitions at and around the £16m mark. If they are to push on, Levy will have to bite the bullet and sanction three or four signings in the region of £25m. Of course, letting 'Arry loose with that kind of dosh could be dodgy. Tottenham may end up with three Africans whilst 'Arry sun bathes in a new mansion in Sandbanks.

Never mind the Upsons, Parkers and Carlton Coles of this world, if Tottenham are to push on, they need to be landing bigger fish. The capture of Modrich and Palacios were master strokes but the signing of Pavolva showed that £11m isn't enough to capture a top quality striker. And Tottenhham now need somebody with more class than Crouch and Defoe up front. How about a £50m bid for Torres? That would signal intent! Or £35m for Tevez? The club can afford to sign both, if they want to gamble.

This summer will tell us a lot about Tottenham's ambition. Will the plans for the new stadium provoke financial caution or will the possibility of elbowing Arsenal to one side spur Levy into taking the ultimate gamble? Sell Keane, Jenas, O'Hara and Pavolva for £30m and then chuck another £75m into 'Arry's spending pot, and Tottenham really could be live title contenders next season! But the likes of Bellamy and Myhill are not the answer. 'Arry and Levy need to look to the stars, not to the nearly men!

Play your cards right Tottenham and anything could happen! Play safe, and somebody else will go home with the big pot!

A lot of time for Liverpool? Everton maybe a proper bunch of fans Real fans are the ones who continue to follow a club that dissapoints all the time not ones that whinge when they lose a match cos they expect to win everything 30 years of hurt that's what it's about Man City 25000 average gates in the 3rd tier doubt that even a quarter of that number would turn up for Liverpool or Manure

I think we're forgetting Man City HF. They can afford to do what Tottenham (and many others) can't.

Yes, the argument maybe that Tottenham are in the Champions League but it will be difficult for them to get far with their current class of players which I think is just below the top class. You are right when you say that Tottenham need to buy these top class players now because if City finish top four next year, Tottenham may have missed their chance. They need to recognise this critical juncture.

At last an interesting post from here without the usual sh*tstorm.

I am not sure that with only a 36k seater and a forthcoming stadium expansion that Levy will be brave here. I expect more than we expected but less than we hoped as the spending sum.

You are dead right about quality upfront but with the oil millions of MC & Ch how can even MU or A*se compete here. MU spend a lot behind the scenes on fabled juniors from all over but seem unwilling to put out more than 30mill on anyone so that limits them while A*senal have been sneaking around(joke) European & African schools for decades with some good results IMO but are still unwilling to spend more than 15mill on anybody. But both of these latter two have a 60k seater so they can afford to wait patiently, but can we?

We can only hope that our motto & Levy match each other for once.

I seriously think that the Champions League is a bridge too far for Spurs in the coming season. They'll really struggle up front in the group stage.

The reality is that they they qualified 4th from the EPL and will have to tough it through qualifying (which shouldn't be that much of a problem) and then put up with being the second best attacking force in their group by quite some margin. Arsenal were in their position this time last year and were fortunate enough to be put in group H with Olympiacos and Standard Liege. The chances are that Spurs won't be so fortunate this time.

So where does this leave 'Arry? Needing quality up front, that's where. Now, I'll have to admit that not much Spurs/Striker/Rumour content came galloping into the forefront of my mind when I was planning my response to this post so here goes a Google search ...

"Tottenham striker Roman Pavlyuchenko targeted for part-exchange deal"

For Peter Odemwingie and Cash. From the Mail last week.

"Sunderland striker Jones again on Spurs agenda"

From tribalfootball.com a couple of weeks back

Time prevents me from digging any further and more (considered) input on the subject would be welcome, but let's really look at what we've got here.

Crouch, Defoe, Gudjohnsen, Kenwyn Jones and Peter Odemwingie.

Now I must admit that I'd any one of those player up front at West Ham next season but it won't be enough. Do Spurs have the funds to land a bigger name in a World Cup summer? Do they have the reputation? I think that the answer is no on both accounts as the Torresses, Van Persies, Militos and Benzemas of this world have bigger fish to fry. Not necessarily much bigger, but far more tempting for their representatives none the less.

I just can't see them progressing past the group stage unless (and this is a big unless) 'Arry can get Spurs into the kind of tactical zone SAF can get Utd into. Rough, tough, fast and direct in the Prem and patient, economical and utterly professional in Europe. We will see. For me at the moment:
The need for strikers and/or drastic improvement in tactical flexibility = The Europa Cup trapdoor.

Now there's something that will develop the club

Dean.

That may be all the difference between my beloved Spurs and the likes of Manure, Russian`s, Squatters and Poo, they go into games expecting a win, home or away, Spurs need a winning mentality. Hopefully, the wins against the Squatters, bindippers and Russian`s will give our lads that belief that all are winnable.

Very good fair unbiased article Hammersfan.

Bindipper is mighty peeved about the events of the recent season. Bitter twisted fool.

Once again, in the rush to praise or condemn, many people are missing the point of the article. Ian Wilson looks at it from the other side, WHY Spurs WON'T be challengers. This is it, make or break time. As Stani says, Man City are waiting in the wings. Tottenham will face all sorts of challenges if they get through to the Group stage of the Champions League and the focus on the Prem will be lost. Without SIGNIFICANT investment, the chance to make a long term break through will be blown.

Are Levy and the Board brave enough to gamble? Or will they play safe, and continue to milk a steady eddy profit at Tottenham, seeing the Champions League cash as a nice little additional earner for a season? Thus the title of the article!

It`s all about opinions, some you agree with, some you don`t. But one doesn`t have to have eyesight to see that Spurs are moving in the right direction.

Astute business accumin by Levy are have kept us in good hold, paying dividends and will continue to do so.
