Full marks to the Wembley crowd last night for the reception given to the soldiers just back from Afghanistan and Iraq (and to whoever organised for them to be there!). It was genuinely touching to see the crowd stand and applaud, and even better, after the game, to see groups of people spontaneously standing and applauding these genuine heroes, with queues forming as people waited to shake hands and say thanks for their efforts.
I was opposed to the Iraq war and believe we should get out of Afghanistan as soon as we possibly can, but it was refreshing to see that the people of Britain still appreciate what our soldiers are doing. The term "hero" is thrown around like confetti in the world of sport, as is the term "pressure". I know I would much rather be taking a penalty in a semifinal shoot out than be in Helmand Province at the moment!
Well done to our soldiers and well done to the fans too!

I can't vouch for how these guys would have behaved if not trained in the army. I am a big fan of National Service for NEATs. Any football hooligans would be sent to Helmend without flack jackets and would put on the front line in a regiment of their own so they didn't endanger the proper soldiers. Those revolting tatted, big bellied yobs would then have thought twice before invading the pitch during the Millwall game!
And there are no over-weight soldiers or soldiers with tattoos or over-weight soldiers with tattoos? You open your gob and your brains fall out then you're full of bullshit rationalisations

I don't see your point. That was a nice gesture by the club. So what? Does that have any bearing on the gratitude shown by the fans last night? The one is a gesture from a corporate entity, the other was spontaneous and heart warming support for our troops from the guy in the street, with or without tats. I found that reassuring and worthy of praise.

Thank you Hammersfan. Great to hear about what happened at Wembley. They need all the support that they can get at the moment. These young men are our very finest. They are fighting in the worst possible scenario & i have the utmost respect for these boys. The Russians tried for eight years but the losses were too great. No nation in history has been able hold that country. The closest was Alexander the great & then only for three years till he died. I have had the privilege to have a lot of contact with a young career army lad who has served in both those places, amongst others. Very stressful, especially when you lose a mate. Mateship is everything under those circumstances. Hopefully the governments will see reason. Good of you to put this up. Cheers.
The reception was genuinely heart warming mate. And the smiles on the faces of the soldiers as people applauded them outside the ground after the match was a joy to see.
