Leeds Heading For Wembley?
It may only be the Capital One Fan Cup, but should Leeds dispose of a weary Chelsea team, knackered after their exploits in the World Club Championship, they have a dream opportunity of making it through to Wembley.
The semifinal line up hardly makes you shudder does it? Bradford City, Swansea, Aston Villa...some of us remember the old Watney Cup and the League Cup is rapidly degenerating to that level. It is an irrelevant side show sadly, but for the also ran teams, it provides an opportunity for cheap glory.
That's why, as a West Ham fan, I get furious when we treat the competition as the joke it has become. Because ridicule it as much as you like, a Piss Pot is available to the winners at the end of the day, and comes with a passport into Europe - albeit in to the equally irrelevant Europa League.
The concern for Leeds is that the sideshow will become the main event. Of course Old Big Gob would love his day out at Wembley and might see it as a fitting way of signing off if he were to bring Leeds silverware, but Birmingham City should serve as a warning of what can happen when you confuse priorities. Yes they won the Carling Piss Pot, but because it was accompanied by relegation to the Championship, they've been in the shit house ever since.
You win some, you lose some. Leeds will go all out for victory over Chelsea - and quite rightly too - but the price paid for success may be huge in the long run.
