Team and Tactics for Bolton
We need a game against Bolton like Cameron needs a salacious press story about his fagging at Eton. We go into the game on the back of an utterly uninspired and insipid surrender at Birmingham, whilst Bolton come into the match adrenaline pumped after one of the Premiership games of the season against Man City. A win for Bolton should see them climb out of the bottom three, whilst defeat for ourselves will see us sink further beneath the survival line. Remember a certain game at Bolton under Pardew? We went into the match with injuries to key players and on the back of a string a poor results. We were thumped 4-0. If that is too painful, how about the 1-0 defeat under Roeder which effectively sealed our last relegation? Or,of course, we have already had a dress rehearsal earlier in the season, when again we came away empty handed.
Whilst Zola will be confusing his players with 4-5-1 and 4-3-3 permutations, Megson will keep it all very simple. Get in their faces, bully them off the ball, look for second phase possession, win as many set plays as possible. Zola will be preparing a bantamweight boxer, and Megson sending out a heavyweight slugger. With our glass jaw, the result looks frighteningly predictable!
And to be fair to Zola, what options does he have? Without Cole, we don't have an attack and we have also lost an important key to defending corners. Dare he bring in Nouble? The kid will give us inches but, from what I've seen, nothing much else! One thing's for sure in my mind, this nonsense of leaving Franco utterly isolated and of playing Stanislas and Diamanti on the wrong flanks must stop. I doubt that Dyer is ready yet to make a start so my team would be 4-4-2 and would read: Green - Spector, Da Costa, Upson (if fit, otherwise Tomkins) Ilunga - Collison, Parker, Kovac, Diamanti - Franco and Stanislas. The decision to leave out Gabbidon might seem controversial but I don't think he is good enough in the air for this match and these opponents. For the same reason, I have gone with Spector over Faubert. I hate picking Kovac but I can't see an alternative unless Dyer is up to starting - and that is very unlikely. I also hate pinning Diamanti to the flank, albeit the correct flank to suit his left foot, but can anybody see him coping against the Bolton bruisers in the middle of the park?
Do I fancy that team to win? No. Do I fancy it to draw? No. I see this game as pretty much a home banker to be honest, just as I did when Pardew led a dispirited and limping bunch up to Bolton for what proved to be his final game. Who knows, a defeat by a similar margin might just trigger the end of Zola's tenure too.
These are dark days as we take the field beneath the shadow of the dark satanic mills.

I think that it is high time that the players are given a Wenger half-time talk. "Are they fit to wear the West Ham shirt?". I am not sure Zola can give that talk. We need to play as if our lives depend on it to stand any chance to win against the bruisers and bouncers of the Premier League. We also need to have the right balance of youth and experience. Da Costa is a must in defence (hopefully next to Upson). I more or less agree with your selection. If we can beat Bolton then we can start dreaming about downing Chelsea next!
Bolton's prowess on setpieces will probably be our undoing.
Still I could see us scoring and getting a draw.
When we bought Kovac, I thought it was as someone who could play centre back as well as holding midfield? Gabbidon has looked off the pace to me and I think the only reason he's been selected is for his experience, da Costa and Tomkins looking a bit green. Why hasn't Kovac been given a start at centre back alongside either Tomkins or da Costa?
As for the article, I pretty much agree with you, which should attract the usual charming remarks!
I don't know that giving the players a Wenger-half-time-style talk will do any good, even if Zola had it in him. Arsenal are top rate side. Look at our starting line up. It just doesn't compare. Without Upson, Cole, Behrami, we look lightweight by premiership standards.
At the start of the season, had everyone been fit and on the strength of last season, I thought we'd do alright this season. At the moment we look utterly abject.
if I had to go with a line up, it'd be yours...
I'm bringing back the optimism for one game only. We will draw!
4 defenders on the bench...brilliant. Spector, Da Costa, Payne, and Daprela. I say, drop Payne and put Abdulla or Montano, or even that overrated Dixon on there. We just need strikers. Stanislas will do a nice job, but I think he'll be outmuscled by the Bolton wingbacks..and Nouble? Jeez.
Davies hasn't scored in 7 or something....shall I say it?
We'll probably give Klasnic a goal too....and a Taylor freekick/thunderbolt!
We'll still win though :)...hopefully
Kareem,
Payne plays in midfield but I agree, I wanna see Dixon getting a few minutes here and there. When are these guys gonna be ready?!
A defensive bench just shows us Zola's intentions when we go in front.
Gabbidon's saved us twice already. Long night
Let's not diss Dyer, he looked upset.
Okay, so Dyer is off for Stanislas. God damn me straight to hell as soon as possible. Who's our only available attacking option for the second half? Nouble...unless Zola wants to get on... or maybe we can put Spector up front...that was what he first played as before going to a fullback.
That's another chance for Bolton... but hey, Klasnic and Davies both have yellow cards...and you know how well we do against teams with 10 men!
Sorry for all the posts..but I just thought of a decent idea... if we can move Kovac to center half.. and have 3 center-backs, put Faubert and Illunga has like you know.. wing-backs or whatever players who play both mid-wings and def-wings are called... Parker in the middle, Stanislas and Collison on the wings... Diamanti on the diamond, and Franco up front.. 5-4-1... hmm
Rabelais, I know we are not Arsenal. I just wanted to make the point that in addition to quality we also lack commitment and conviction in our play. I really don't know what the hell Zola is doing! I can't beleive his team selection once again!
