Need For Centre Back Is Desperate

We are being linked with wingers, central midfielders, full backs and forwards, yet the crying need is for a centre back. So desperate is the need, indeed, that Avram has talked about how important it is to retain Upson. Dear God, if that isn't evidence of desperation, I don't know what is!

Da Costa finished the season well and is a year older and wiser. Tomkins finished the season against Wolves and that headache will take some shifting! Even with Upson, we still look vulnerable through the centre of out defence. If he moves on, then we are in real trouble unless we sign a replacement.

The transfer merry go round hasn't really started, to be fair. If the rumours are true, we will have midfielders coming out of our arse, so presumably we can expect to see at least two of Noble, Parker, Diamanti, Behrami and Kovac sold before the season kicks off. The emphasis being placed on midfielders who can score is great, and the search for pacey strikers is also reassuring. But until we actually sign anybody, there is this nagging doubt that this is all paper talk.

But more worrying still is the fact that not even the papers are linking us with centre backs. Avram needs to look at that goals against column last season, and perhaps watch a tape of the Bolton and Wolves games at Upton Park!

Now that Belhadj has buggered off we need another fullback transfer target.

Yep you are right - but as you say the world cup has delayed the transfer merry go round - Hitzlesberger(?) came out of the blue maybe Lucio will too! (and my arse is a fire engne!)

Your right mate. We weriously need a centre half and a right back that can defend. I would go for Bougherra and young. We also need to get rid of the deadwood, Spector,Noble,Kovac and behrami or faubert.

faubert deadwood ?!?...you make me laugh! The little French fellow could create exceptional flanks for the strikers if he was allowed to play in the right midfield. Even as a rightback he created more assists than most of our midfield players. Behrami/Noble/Kovac in a better matching position could also bring some positive impact. Just Specs couldn't show much quality last campaign...

Faubert is deadwood if we sign Barrera. The players mentioned are all average players, and in an ideal world we could keep them as squad players. However we all know the finacial situation we are in so Noble, Spector, Kovac and one of Faubert and Behrami must be sold.

I would clear out:

Gabbidon
Upson
Spector
Dyer
Kovac
Noble
Faubert
Sears

I reckon this would generate around £15m.

We seem to be linked with midfielders and strikers.

I would build the midfield around Parker, Behrami, Hitzlesberger, Barrera, Stanislas, Diamanti and two more new signings.

Hopefully we will grab a couple of promising strikers but WE DO NEED a right back and a centre back (or two), this should be at the top of the shopping list!

I would agree with Pete's list except perhaps for Upson. I can't beleive Spector is still a Hammer!
